One thing the gaming world is NOT lacking is Fantasy RPG. There have been many things used: Races, The world, The use of Magic, ect. . . What I want to know is, according to gamers, "What makes a Fantasy RPG Unique?" and "What do you look for in a Fantasy RPG?" and "What games have really broken away from your stereotypical 'Dwarves Humans and Elves'?"

I think the Elder Scrolls universe did a good job of staying away from the Tolkien mythos. While Oblivion seemed vanilla on the surface they do have their own vision in their world.

And basically what makes it unique, is anything that doesn't directly rip off Tolkien, except for the licensed LotR games, because they kinda have too.

pfft, you forgot goblins. there at least as wide spread as dwarfs in fantasy games.

O.T igenerally look for just a game, as i can like anything, as long as it's playable.

I like the whole dwarves and elves thing. It's established, so you don't need to learn new lore for every single game, you know the stereotypes so everything's familiar. And well....it's established because it's good. It works, you know?

I like a fantasy game that features beastmen, specifically Lizard people. So Oblivion got a lot of playthrough by me for letting me play as a member of the reptilian race Argonian.

But dont you think that the Stereotypes are overused to the point that is getting old?

Hmm, good point, but no, I think they're varied enough from each game to the next to prove interesting. It's a tried and tested formula.

It depends on how it is played and portrayed. When the races become more of a maths problem (If I am an elf I can kill at range faster etc) then the reason for having races is mute, there is no soul in the matter and if you want to play a different race for the maths of it alonr then you are playing the wrong kind of game. As for having various races it is a good idea. But my question is, why not only 1 kind (not talking about classes) of elf [or human]? Why not several kinds from different parts of the world?

Too much ZP for you.

Every fantasy universe should have dwarves. Dwarves rule! We should cut elves and humans altogether.

I don't care about any of the other races; I love elves. Pointy ears + tree hugging = SEXY!

Some of the races from EQ were pretty cool. Froglock and Erudite are cool (especially Erudites). You might also want to tack on Orcs (or Orks) to the list of overused fantasy races.

Also Beastmen styled races are cool. I like furries, but when when they're digital.
