To call GT a racing game is kind of a misnomer.

It is a game. In this game, a common preocupation is driving in an attempt to get from one arbitrary point to another in the shortest possible time. Often this takes the form of a contest with other cars on the road with victory being awarded to the first to cross the line. Other times you simply attempt to beat a time limit imposed on your performance. In either case, I believe it would correctly be called racing. It would seem that either racing game or driving game are applicable here.

Trailer looks amazing.

When it cut to the top gear test track my mind did backflips.

November 2... hello GT5, goodbye life.

However, the core focus of the game is on car tweaking, performance, and physics simulation, not on the racing itself. The racing is a means by which to earn more car parts or cars, to test the effects of performance tweaks, and to showcase the car physics.

It is only a game insofar as it is a simulation of reality, and it is only a racing game insofar as it is a game that has races in it.

Every GT game to date has been a stellar recreation that mirrors with absolute perfection the performance of real cars on real tracks. However, they've all lacked any real sense of speed, or competitive AI.

Go look at the case of a Gran Turismo game, and check the tagline:

Gran Turismo: The real driving simulator.

Driving sim. Not racing sim.

I don't want to seem insulting, but it's a game. I'm currently restoring a '72 chevelle, and let me tell you, I only wish it was so easy to tweak a car's performance. If GT was ANYTHING like real life, anyone who tweaked carelessly would have to spend tons of game money replacing parts every time a tiny error was made. You enjoying that DOHC V8? Oh darn, you just turned the engine while the timing was slightly off, you need to replace 32 valves, check the springs, cams, and the timing chains/belts for damage. Sorry for wasting the last 5 hours of your time... go buy more parts, and start over!

It's still a game, because a true "simulation" gives real world applicability where a game doesn't. A flight simulator is used to teach pilots how to fly without danger of losing a plane or potential pilot. GT is just a game. A damn pretty game, but still a game.

How many racing games came out in the span it took for GT5 to come out? I mean several sequels of some titles have even come out. At least 5 Need for Speed games that's for sure.

I suspect this is because they modeled all the cars then realized that people wanted damage in the damn game already and had to remodel them.

Buuuuuut whatever I'm sure the game will be fancy and all that, not gonna get it because it's not my style game but I'm sure it'll be fancy.

Okay, everyone's making almost as big a deal out of this as they did over Alan Wake, and I'm having a really hard time understanding why. Granted, I'm more of a Need for Speed person, but will someone explain to me Why all the hype over another Gran Turismo? I think I might have played a demo fot 3 once upon a time and I wasn't overly impressed, not the best game I've ever played, not the worst either(That goes to Tokyo Racer X-treme Drift, and it's gonna be hard to steal that position). So why is everyone excited over THIS racing game?

On the disc: 50 cars

On the marketplace for a buck each: 900

Hey if they can do it to Modnation Racer why not with GT5?

Where are all these gold sellers coming from?

Gran Turismo has long set the standard for driving simulations. It was easily one of the most realistic looking games on PS1, and the sequels were equally impressive. It isn't meant to be played as an arcade-style racer, it's meant to be played as a simulator. They've all had fairly extensive customization options that allowed you to fine tune a car exactly the way you want it. The controls mimic the way each car actually handles during a variety of situations (including offroad rally racing, snow racing, rain, and many others).

So you see, it's more for people who are true automobile fans and want to use their favorite types of cars in the game. It's not for people who want to drive fast and crash into stuff like Burnout or Need for Speed. If you like those kind of games, go for it. I'm not saying they are bad or anything, it's just not even a good comparison. It would be like saying Microsoft Flight Simulator is a lot like Ace Combat.

That's two reasons to get a PS3 now.

I think the emphasis was on the driving and racing rather than the game/simulator thing...

Is there even a market for realistic auto driving experiences anymore?
Because i'm seeing the whole scene moving in a mario kartish direction eg. (Blur, Slip/Second)

I liked the trailer but i gotta wonder if they'll let us tune up the car (not in the neons and nitro kinda way)
There was never a time when racing simulators where majoritary to arcade games, so the scene is not moving anywhere.
Gran Turismo and Forza will always deliver realism.
Also , from your last question , I'll suppose you never played a GT game? To answer, yes , you can tune your car, to an extent that you can forget to actualy go race.

Well it's about time! Now I can plan on getting a PS3 in November. Of course deep down I sorta was thinking car's would be an obsolete means of travel due to by the time this game actually got a release.

Me and my father just picked GT4 back up. We might actually be convinced to buy a PS3 assuming this game is for seriously released this time.

Too little, too late. I bought Forza because I was sick of waiting for this game. Now Forza is doing a fine job scratching my racing game itch.

Nice working with you, GT. We'll always have the memories.
