E3: Assassin's Creed: Revelations

A good series gets better.

At the ripe old age of 51, sequestered in Constantinople and condemned to die, Ezio Auditore da Firenze is ready to retire. Having been an assassin for 30 years, he is unclear about his future. He has questions. Doubts. This journey is his quest to answer these questions, to justify or condemn his actions. This will be our last adventure with him. In his attempt to flee 17th century Constantinople, Ezio seeks help from the elegantly costumed Ottoman assassins, to fight for and with him. This is his final hurrah.

We are reaching the end of our journey with Ezio and Altaire, but from the looks of things, they're going out with a bang. I mean that literally. Revelations [http://www.amazon.com/Assassins-Creed-Revelations-Xbox-360/dp/B002I08RA0/] is exploring their love for explosives. The range of explosives are a'plenty in this iteration, expanding your arsenal by allowing you to rig your own explosives, for both offensive and defensive purposes. Smoke bombs will hide you from pursuers until you escape, or sneak within the smoke, using your eagle sense to see your enemies, and to dispatch them. Splinter bombs...well, they'll kill everybody.

My favorite new item was the Hookblade, which is exactly what it sounds like. A hooked blade allows you to climb buildings quickly, and zip line from one building to the next using available ropes. If at any point there is an enemy below you on your line, you can drop from the rope, mid-zip, and pounce suddenly, ferociously, like the wrath of God.

Another improvement would be the Eagle Eye. This acts like a map, but an intuitive one, beginning as a small blue sliver within a circle, pointing in the direction of your enemies or target. The sliver expands as you get closer until the blue fills the entire circle when in range. This played a large part of the multiplayer demonstration, in which I took turns as the hunter and the prey. The eye was as helpful in either mode, making the chase more intense for both parties.

The demo for Revelations takes place in Constantinople and is more culturally diverse than the previous titles. Where we've been used to the Italian, this society will be peppered with Greek, Turkish, Jewish, Gypsy and Romani. The environment is rich and vibrant, and wide open. There were intense cinematic instances in the single player demo that played in linear action sequences on rails. I was, however, reassured that 95% of the game will be in an open world environment.

The historical details in Revelations are a nice touch. The demo was maybe six minutes, and included a chain across the waters leading into Constantinople, a real chain used successfully to protect the city from ships in the 1400's. Greek Fire was introduced as a usable weapon, which is essentially ancient Napalm launching a sticky, caustic substance that holds fire even on water.

In a brief teaser we were given some insight into poor Desmond's future. The last time we saw Desmond he was in a sorry state; lost, and broken. The teaser sees him in a desperate fight to fix his psyche and to heal from within the Animus. From within his mind. The host of this particular presentation was purposefully vague, so more on that later.

With all of the improvements on an already stable series, I'm very excited to get my hands on the full title in November.

Assception?

Anyway, I'm glad that this is the last one of Altair and Ezio. I love the characters but it really is time to move on.

Have you seen the trailer?

Paired with the soundtrack, (which is by an awesome artist, I might add), I get very cool 'This is it, our last hurrah' vibe from it. It's gonna be awesome.

Just when I though I was getting tired of Assassins Creed this pops up. Love the location choice as well, Constantinople looks amazing.

Eh, to be honest I wish they went with another protagonist. Ezio's cool and all, but he had his run. Twice. Kind of wished for someone from Ancient Greece.

Still looking forward to it though.

I was dubious at first, because it seemed as though Ubi was definitely milking Ezio with this new addition (I mean, he's in his fifties, for Chrissakes), but this article has much restored my faith. Glad that they're choosing a new location entirely and that they're finally wrapping up Ezio's story. It looks as though this'll try and add a little more depth to his character much in the same way Brotherhood did.

Also, if Brotherhood was AssCreed 2.5, what's Revelations?

Looking forward to this, but honestly, it doesnt seem like it will blow me away.

I think I will wait before the price drops a bit.

I'm curious as to news on AC: Lost Legacy... You know, that supposed 3DS title which stars Ezio as he goes to find the truth about Altair's past? The one which was announced at Nintendo's conference last year? Yeah, it doesn't look like that's happening (which makes me sad...), as this game appears to have the exact plot as that.

I'm really sorry to be that guy, but I think you mean 16th century. You know as in 1500s?

Brotherhood was 2.33. Revelations will be 2.67.

What? I have a math exam on Monday and this is my way of compensating for not studying at all.

OT: Constantinople looks great, I hope they manage to add more life to it than they did to Jerusalem and Damascus from the first game which were, unfortunately nigh identical dustbowls.

In fact, I hope they manage to achieve the level of atmosphere they did in Venice. Florence, Forli, and even Rome can burn in Hell.... Because Venice was just fucking BEAUTIFUL in AC2. The atmosphere was so rich(especially in the Carnivale section), it was almost unbelievable.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the game takes place in the 16th century. Just a small typo.

Also, I'm really looking forward to this game. The Assassin's Creed series has only seen improvement since the first game, and I can't wait to see the end of Ezio's story. He's a character we've seen progress from novice, to leader, to badass mentor/elder and its going to interesting to see what the future holds for the Assassin's Creed franchise.

I absolutely love this series, but I wonder- wasn't Brotherhood supposed to be Ezio's last hurrah? I assumed that was the main point of having him rebuild the Assassin's Guild (story-wise, at least), considering that it seemed like he was training replacements for when he finally retired. Even at the end of AC2 and beginning of Brotherhood (before he is provoked back into duty), it seems like he was getting tired of being an assassin.

although i always have some critique ion the serie, i do love it. although the story is a bit fucked up :p. i'm glad this is the last game with ezio, really started to get annoying, although i must say he is now awesome being that he is old.

and the mulitplayer... god, i was sooo dissapointed by it. like yathzee said, its way too random. and its imo broken as hell. why cant i fight back? why has the assassin priority on attacks? why decides my avatar to stop when i'm supposly killed by someone. that last thing just infuriates me.

I have different feeling about this game. After have seen the game-play trailer, I have a miss of "to much cinematic"/ "yai new weapon/game mechanism!"

Must have. Still, I'm wondering where the AC fanboi are hide, the AC series undoubtedly get better with every new game, and even if I have some little winnie about AC, I can't actually badmouth this game: ACB simply destroyed my premonition of a bad game made only to milk AC2...
Don't know what to think about revelation. I'm trying this hard to hate it, and every time AC developer bang on my face a good game...

I am super stoked about going to Constantinople in this next iteration of AssCreed but I am primarily happy to see that we're officially wrapping up the stories of Altair and Ezio. They've both been fun to play with but damn, it's time to move on.

And I may be in the minority in this, but I'm hoping to see some considerable game time as Desmond. While 90% of the games thus far have been about the historical characters, the story is all about the present day struggle with the Templars. I'm hoping that we'll get to a lot more as Desmond this next time around so that his story will be a bit more fleshed out come AC3.

Actally, it looks like the E3 trailer takes place in 16th century Masyaf, not Constantinople, although the game will take place mainly in Constantinople. And yes, it looks awesome.

(Side note: I'm constantly amazed by the Ubisoft marketing team's ability to find absolutely perfect songs for their HD trailers)

Anyway, loved the continuing replication of the symbolism used in all the trailers - light/shadow, the eagles, the ring of spears 'round the hero, etc. I love effectively used continuity in marketing.

This November is shaping up to be truly epic...

Many mistakes made in this write-up. Revelations looks boss. The story looks stellar. The desmond gameplay looks better than inception.

Cannot wait for this game. Looks amazing and the trailer is stunning.

I think it's terrific that we get to play as Oldzio and end his story.
