E3: Gears Of War: Judgement Impresses

Things get a little toasty in the next Gears of War.

At E3 2012 today, Microsoft showcased a teaser for the next Gears of War game, titled Gears of War: Judgment. The teaser featured Damon Baird, one of the characters from Delta Squad, in shackles amid images of Locusts and COG soldiers fighting in a burning city.

Details are sparse, but GoW: Judgement is being developed by Bulletstorm developer People Can Fly [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/117574-Bulletstorm-Dev-Working-on-Gears-of-War] and will be set 15 years before the events of the first game. It sees series protagonists Damon Baird and his squad stand trial for treason during the early days of the COG army's war against the Locusts, when the hostile invading species emerged from underground and did a fairly good job of torching most of civilization.

GoW: Judgement will also feature class-based multiplayer, a first for the series. There is currently no information on a planned release date for the game.

Class based and changed control scheme.. the Cod-ification has begun..
Apparently the classes are soldier, engineer, medic and...I think sniper? And it's still third person (haven't read anything about a different control scheme so I can't comment on that) so I don't the codification.

I'm guessing that a liberal interpretation of the backstory will work better for a Gears prequel than it did for Halo.

As long as People Can Fly can make gunhaving fun again.

Y to swap between main weapons, hold Y for pistol, LB is grenade now..

One of the devs on twitter said they're getting the game to evolve past shotguns and wallbouncing.. The things that made it unique

Oh.
Well...humph. Seems a bit pointless after having the same control setup for the first 3 games and the holding Y for pistol doesn't seem to be that good of an idea. Especially when the original setup works so well.

I thought that this would use the Matrix Reloaded Retribution use of words the begin with an Re like Red Dead Redemption. I guess that the producers wanted a Dead to Rights Retribution against those people that didn't like the games and decided to release a Gears of War: Remake or a Gears of War: Revisionism, lets just hope it won't end up Gears of War: Retarded, that would be Gears of War: Regrettable.

Am I done here?
This will probably end up Really, really, really, really, really Dumb.

My main issue is the quick nades.
For competitive gears is done, Epic didn't support it when it needed it and now the community is just dropping off the map..
There likely won't be another hypefestation.

No... no they really didn't. It's spelled judgment. Our article writer has actually gotten it wrong.

Ok, I was a bit skeptical at first. But seeing Baird as the new squad leader, I'm sold. Baird is simply awesome.

3 games wasn't enough, I see. Is this the future of gaming? Constant sequels and prequels and almost no new fuckin' IP's?

Watch shows like Extra Credits or Jimquisition. They've pointed out how many companies are really scared on putting out new IPs because many games, Triple A games in particular, cost up to millions of dollars now to produce and, because of the retailer-developer relationship, most of their profits need to be raked in with the first few weeks of release or profits dry up, meaning that it has to be something that sells fast and is guaranteed to sell, period.

And because most original people are turning to Indie, dollar games, Triple A companies are even more scared of moving out of their comfort zone since those Indie games also sap products.

Gotta love Capitalism.

I agree; Baird is the character impresses me the most. On the back of the package I have containing his action figure it says that he gets promoted often due to his technical savvy and action on the battlefield and then is just as quickly demoted due to his insubordination and smartass attitude.

Aw man, this pains me. The lack of classes and unique gameplay is what made Gears one of my favorite series of late. I think they should've just let Gears end with 3. I get the feeling this last one will ruin what the previous games have accomplished.

"shrugs"

or Maybe I'm all wrong and it actually will be really good, hard not to judge a book by its cover.

I was just thinking that. Really, do we need another Gears game?

And I'm not to on top of my Gears background history, but wasn't it Fenix who was on trial? And uh, 15 years later? Wouldn't the make Baird a teenager or something? He never seemed that old.
