This happens whenever a particular game does really well. A bunc hof other people try to piggy back on the success of one game in that genre and end up flooding the market. The game de jour that is making everyone want to produce shooters is Modern Warfare even though none of the people doing so have any idea what it is that made that game good (and I say this as someone that hated MW2). We saw a similar thing when rock band came out for the music genre.

Ièd say I still got a lot of out of this E3 though primarily from nintendo which kinda surprised me. There were a handfull of other interesting games there as well including a couple of decent looking shooters with my only disappointment really being no Saints Row 3 or Fire Emblem game

Didn't you know? It's just an FPS with swords :p

I like FPS games so I have no problem with lots of themcoming out.

After all, there aren't enough really good ones.

As far as I'm concerned RPGs are dead by definition. Never in a game that has claimed to be a "role-playing game" have I actually felt immersed in it to the point that I feel like I'm "role-playing". And that's what it's supposed to be, right? I've been more immersed in games like Condemned: Criminal Origins and Metro 2033, than some detached, cutscene-infused, number-obsessed grindfest.

But, in the end, who cares? If it's a good game, play it. If a lot of those games happen to be in first-person, that's just coincidence, and I highly doubt it'll become a monopolizing trend.

Mass Effect 2 may be Run and Gun-ish but that by no means they dropped the ball on the story. Well okay in the end they dropped it a bit but it was a fun ending!

And most of those games were good/sound good anyway. ALSO were you paying attention to Nintendo at all. They made some great announcements.

Are you implying Ghost Recon is run and gun?

If Fallout and Mass Effect are shooters because they have guns i guess Final Fantasy and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (Stryker has a gun) are too.

I don't really play FPS not because it is cool to hate them (didn't know it was, but then I am 44 and not really trying to be cool tbh............) but because I suck at them, I just can't get my head round first person perspective (except for RL ;-) ) There needs to be variety though in games. It would suck big time for me if all games became FP :-(
I don't mind shooters but I like (personally) for it to be telling me an engaging story.
E3 was only a bit ''Meh!'', for me for the fact that (even though we weren't expecting it) there was absolutely nothing from BioWare about DA2 and ME3.

you might want to start caring...maybe even trying to "vote with your wallet" (boycot).
You do realise that people who buy FPS like them?
And those who do not, they weren't going to buy the games anyway.
I meant shooters. I've edited my post.

I know...but can you see how this is all developing and the possible implications?

Shooters are popular yes...the new generations that refresh the consumer base start out with shooters cuz they picked it up (possibly from their brothers and/ or friends) with Halo 3 or Call of Duty MW2 (and we both now they won't be 18..hell not even 15). So here's a whole generation growing up with shooters and wanting shooters.

Looks like demand followed by supply right? Why...that's normal you might say. In reality it is supply that created the demand (those first moments of experimentation with Halo 3 or MW2). You first "enter the gaming world" and form your preferences...that forming of first preferences isn't completely dominated by free will/ choice...it's more of a subtle influence...a contagion of sorts.

Also, it's not like all people are super open-minded in their teens (there are always exceptions though). Retro is "ghey" now (Look at those pixels! it's Legoland!)...reading long dialogue is boring. "I wanna shoot stuff...I want that rush of adrenaline...things exploding etc". Result: kids stick to what they know and like...at least for the first 5-10 years.

And so the market is formed...year after year. Until adventure games are "ghey", isometric D&D styled RTS and RPG are "ghey" and the only thing that sells well enough is shooters.

The aforementioned spiral of influence and sticking to what you know...creates a market that slowly but surely tells developers...hey..why would you develop a RTS game anyway...it's a niche...there's no money there! The money is with the shooter hungry teens..so that's where we'll go.

And that's how slowly but surely...shooters are becoming the only game in town.

EDIT: Yes...Command and Conquer and Star Craft and Total War are exceptions....cuz their fanbase is large enough...(not really a niche then) but for how long? If every new generation has a bigger chance of being "infected" with the "shooter virus" then that base will slowly erode until the RTS genre is no longer profitable.

The fact that there is a market for shooter games DOES NOT mean there isn't one for other types of games.
Yes, the kids of today consider other types of games, as you put it, "ghey". But that doesn't mean that they're the only ones who actually play games.
When kids mature, they reevaluate their priorities and genres they previously didn't like might end up as their favorites.
All the little children right now play the Wii. Does that mean that the other consoles do not have their audiences?
The best example I can really bring up is Heavy Rain.
It sold a million copies. Yeah. It's definitely not an FPS or anything, it's a very very niche game.

i love first person and third person shooters
i just wish more effort was put into making them original and fun
rather then shoehorning multiplayer/co-op/3d/motion control

you what would be cool? an fps where you play as an normal office worker being chased around by the fbi/cia/government who want to kill you for.... knowing something

being hunted by soldiers and helicopters at night in a metropolitan city with only a pistol and a knife

i would play that

I respect that it's hard to understand since you haven't been to an E3 but here's the deal man. There are a BILLION (roughly) games on display at E3 but websites and magazines tend to only focus on the ones that will likely be the most popular so as to maximize their readers.

I'm 100% sure there were some really cool new things on display there, they just won't get the coverage those games will.

You listed 12 games. There were a lot more then 12 games at E3. Secondly, New Vegas is an RPG not an FPS. Finally, your "prediction" of games at E3 2011 is absurd.

I love FPS so... yeah.
The trend is pretty much up my alley.
Also, games like GoW 3, Vanquish and Mass Effect 2 are TPS, not FPS.
Just so that you know.
haha I was thinking the same, I'm shit at anything that doesn't involve guns, even though I still enjoy them.

Though I get the OP point, it would be nice to see some more variety in the triple A titles.

By the time kids mature...they will no longer be profitable as they won't be solely buying shooters...they'll go to ever shrinking niches...which are prone to extinction. Sure, those niches might survive...with big names like Square Enix and all...but they'll be so scared of innovation (risk!) that they'll just be making the same crap over and over...just like the shooter developers. When it's all about the money, innovation...true innovation is unacceptable risk. So they'll innovate stuff like graphics, tweak some gameplay mechanics...and add another numerical to the name.

Ahh yes...Nintendo. Nintendo is all about the money too...it's just getting it elsewhere: the casual market...while at the same time trying to retain their "hardcore" fans with master IP's like Zelda and Metroid.

E3 2010:

Killzone 3
Gears of War 3 third person
Crysis 2
Vanquish third person
Call of Duty: Black Ops
Ghost Recon: Future Soldier partially third person
Rage
Bodycount
Brink
Bulletstorm
Medal of Honor
Fallout: New Vegas [/b]Can be played in third person as well as first person[/b]
Mass Effect 2 is also third person

*sigh*....

Guess this is what we want, right? We want to OD on FPS apparently...well..let's all fire away then shall we...until our brains rot and ooze out of our ears and nose.
Just wanted to point out a few flaws in your text. And what's so bad about the first person perspective anyway? Do you really hate it, or do you just want to follow the wagon of hating fps because it's cool?
also new vegas is an RPG-FPS which as the person above stated can be played in third person.

I noticed he only pointed out the stuff that was negative and tired, ignoring the fact there are some really great titles coming out and especially even the 3DS which I expected to suck but is so far awesome. Oh well...

Mass Effect and Fallout are shooters with RPG elements? Oh you...

I like FPS and TPS, and there were a few other games I saw that I approve of.

And certainly this...I guess their gonna just release more DLC for the rest of the year before we see any hope of proper sequels. Would settle for another expansion for DA, though.
