Same goes for you, Activision! Go ahead and take the piss out on EA!
By now, I'm sure everyone knows about the whole rivalry between EA and Activision with the two latest games off of their respective franchises, Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. I remember when a representative from Activision was saying something along the lines of "there's room for both games!" [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/112398-Activision-Not-Impressed-By-EAs-Name-Calling] and a representative from EA basically shot down that notion. "It's a dog eat dog world" [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/112486-EA-Slings-More-Mud-at-Activision] is what he basically said, and in the purest sense he is right. The consumer is limited and the money they carry is also limited.
In addition to this little squabble, everyone basically started bitching about how EA and Activision should just "shut up" and how it's so "degrading" and some other bullshit. As if somehow a little bit of mudslinging constitutes as the plague of insults in the games industry. People pointed out how, just hours before, the creative director of MW3 had just played a demo of Battlefield 3 and how he liked it, and how EA was just being a meany-beany and just assholes n' shit n' stuff.
Here's a suggestion;
[HEADING=3]Let them have at it.[/HEADING]
I, honestly, find it absolutely delightful that these companies are trying to take the piss out on each other. For too long we've basically had companies hide behind PR execs, trying to carefully word their press releases to subtly jab at another company that everyone just points out is "Rep of company x points out how great company x is, what a shock!" anyway. For a company to basically just shit on another one due to fierce competition is, as far as I'm concerned, an entertaining commercial between the two main events (BF3/MW3).
The creative director of MW3 playing Battlefield 3? So what? Of course companies play each others games, no big deal. It's silly to think that somehow this kind of thing means that everyone should get along, that "there's room for every game! Everyone can have fun!" When, in reality? No. The consumer is limited, and their dollars even more so. The two companies could be the best of buddies, and it still won't make a lick of difference in the end because they need to compete for the consumer's dollar. Part of that, yeah, comes from a little jabbing and mudslinging. Nobody outside the "know" of this industry even gives a crap about whether they're mudslinging anyway.
This is McDonalds versus Burger King, Coke versus Pepsi, Star Trek versus Star Wars. PS2 beats the lunchbox Gamecube. SEGA does what Nintendon't. Collecovision provides more colored pixels than the Atari! I say it's high time we're overdue for another good ole' fashioned pissing contest between two bitter rivals. Let them get it out of their system!
Stop being a bunch of sensitive ninnies and let them sling their mud! There's nothing wrong with a little healthy shit-spewing contest every once in a while.
EDIT: Also, awesome, 10,000 posts. I HAVE ACHIEVED THE RANK OF DEMI-GOD!
