EA, Eidos Confirm More Closures

It's getting ugly out there: Rockpool Games [http://www.ea.com].

EA Black Box, acquired by Electronic Arts in 2002, is best known for its work on the EA Canada [http://www.needforspeed.com/] facilities in Burnaby, British Columbia. Specific numbers weren't revealed at the time of the announcement, but EA now says that only 150 of the studio's 350 employees will be offered jobs elsewhere in the company.

While EA Black Box appears to be finished, representatives of U.K.-based EA studio EA UK [http://www.criteriongames.com/] operation in Guildford, would not be affected by the cuts.

Unfortunately, the Eidos-owned Rockpool Games studio isn't so lucky. The publisher announced that it would be closing the Manchester-based studio, laying off 14 people. Eidos only acquired the studio in early 2007 as part of an effort to break into casual gaming, but tough times at the company, most recently in the failure of expected levels [http://www.tombraider.com/], have apparently resulted in new priorities.

"As a company we need to focus our efforts on high-quality titles that will deliver long-term franchise value, and in these incredibly challenging and competitive times we need to pro-actively manage our cost base," an Eidos rep told Develop [http://www.developmag.com/news/31163/Eidos-closes-Manchester-studio]. "This decision was a difficult one to make and we would like to thank these employees for their hard work and we wish them well in their future careers."

Is anyone surprised that Need For Speed: Undercover or Tomb Raider: Underworld failed? I didn't think so.

Lets face it, the American's screwed Tomb Raider up bigtime. Give the series back to the innovators back in the UK. As for Need for Speed - how many street racing games do you need?

Another company grinding franchises into dust is just what the gaming community needs, right? Right??

Jeez guys, it doesn't take one game to completely shut down a studio, it takes many bad games to shut down a studio. Unless the game was horrifically bad, I don't think one tomb raider game was enough to completely kill them off.

This is obviously an effect from the recession, and while, yes, Tomb Raider didn't sell that well it wasn't completely its fault.

Either way, more people lose their jobs, and I feel more and more scared of the future.
