An indie dev would have to be mad to alienate potential buyers with an Origin requirement.

I'll make sure to skip any indie title that require Origin just like I skipped Battlefield 3 and ME 3.

At this point, I'm so fed up with EA I have been skipping games that just have their name on 'em.

And what, pray tell, did EA do to you?

Cause frankly, aside from the datamining (which has since ceased) EA hasn't been more evil than say, actiblizz in recent memory.

I don't feel like typing all night but besides the shit service called Origin which they tried to force down my throat by taking their games off of Steam and then selling ME3 and Battlefield with it (They failed cause I skipped both); how about their stupid mickey mouse currency called bio points? How about their horrible prices for their dlcs that never go on sale? How about ruining Dragon Age? How about ruining Mass Effect 3?

Honestly I can't believe you asked that when these are just some of the things that have already been said by many.

And don't try to tell me how Origin is just like Steam cause it EA can't touch Steam's service and sales. And even if they did become better I don't care cause of their strong arm tactics and everything else I mentioned that left a bad taste in my mouth.

How you treat your customers matters.

And I don't buy Activision games anymore either.

How about that evil corporation Valve, not selling it's proprietary titles through mediums other than Steam?

come now, you can't -really- believe what you're saying.

Bioware, not EA. Get things straight. EA provides the funds. Bioware provides the stupid.
Honestly I can't believe you asked that when these are just some of the things that have already been said by many.
Please, enlighten me. All I've seen about EA vice the Origin Datamining and nickle-and-diming (Which, frankly, they aren't the worst offenders of this) I have yet to see how they're so much more evil than their competition.
And don't try to tell me how Origin is just like Steam cause it EA can't touch Steam's service and sales. And even if they did become better I don't care cause of their strong arm tactics and everything else I mentioned that left a bad taste in my mouth.
As it stands, Steam is an infinitely better service than origin. But then, I'd hope it was, with the seven (please correct me if I'm wrong) year head start it has.
How you treat your customers matters.
Incidentally, I've had better CS experiences with EA than I have any other game company (except for TRION, who practically gave me a handjob just because I had to call them to unfuck my account)
And I don't buy Activision games anymore either.

***Bioware and EA are now one and the same*** since Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk became Senior Vice President/General Manager and VP respectively after they sold (out) Bioware to EA. Why is this not common knowledge?

And that right there are all the facts you need to know about why Bioware has gone to hell after the EA acquisition. Bioware's founders BECAME EA.

Not bothering to go on about this anymore since we won't be changing each others' minds. I have already listed some of my many reasons why I don't buy EA games anymore.

But I will reply to your last comment:

Actually, I was alt tabbed out of Torchlight 2's beta. You may have heard of the developers. They created Diablo 1-2.

You owe me $5.

PS- I do think Trion is an amazing company as well. Too bad they don't know how to do open world pvp. They lost me to Guild Wars 2.

I suppose this is theoretically a good thing, as long as there isn't any small print such as them only being allowed to put their game on Origin if they take advantage of the offer.

Well originally it had all sorts of data gathering functionality, just because they turn it off for a bit doesn't mean its gone and I fully expect them to turn it on as soon as they think people have forgotten about it, ea also has a rep for banning people from all their games on the list, and I don't trust ea with that much control over my games library. EA already has a habit of turning off the servers on games that don't see as much multi use as they want, I would not be surprised at all to see you suddenly lose access to older games on your list when ea feels like it can't milk them anymore.
Dont forget their atrocious billing system, terrible customer service and the problems they've had with people being unable to log in to their accounts for no good reason. It even decided to make itself disappear along with all his games on my friends laptop, but he did ignore my advice to avoid Origins, so i suppose its his own fault.

Regardless of our personal feelings about Origin, can we not agree that this is (until we have actual evidence otherwise) that this is a very solid thing to do for indie devs? Origin has 12 million users worldwide, a number that's only going to grow. That's a huge potential audience for someone trying to get a small, niche project off the ground.
No, I can't. IMO, this isn't about supporting indie devs, it's about removing competition from the open market and getting it under EA's control by any means necessary.

Think about it. Someone in EA had to go to their boss and say "how about we do THIS?". And then they had to answer the question "What's in it for US?" over and over by many different department heads. And every answer had to be a plus for EA in some way, or this would not be happening. That's how things work in corporate decision-making circles (and illustrates why they're called circles btw).

Were EA to disclose any reasons or rationale other than "look what nice guys we are", we could add those to our considerations. But as it stands, it's all too easy to say "this is just a ploy to leverage the developer's popularity to get more people to install Origin so EA can get their customer data + a direct advertising channel. And as a side bonus, EA can compete directly with the developer by keeping their ads to the back".

None of this is good for the success of crowdfunding, which I am hoping is the business model of the future.

OT: There is something behind this. EA isn't doing this to be nice to kickstarters. I cant place my finger on it but there is something wrong here.
I'm sorry but do you realize how stupidly paranoid you sound? All this hatred and paranoia over what? A game publishing company?

Yes, almost everything EA does is either really stupid or really bad but is this all worth it? Is it really that hard to just dislike the company, not buy their products and shut the fuck up about it?

Truth of the matter is this is good for kickstarters on the outside but what's really going on underneath it all means jack shit to you unless you decide to start your own kickstarter

IT'S A JOKE. Yeah EA can be a bad company sometime but no one thinks there an "evil empire."

I know that EA aren't doing this out of the goodness of their hearts, but it's at least encouraging to see that EA may be starting to get it that being nice to people and the positive PR that comes with that is actually good for business. Not only does this help the developers, but it makes EA look good, ensures that more of these games will actually come to Origin, makes it more likely that these developers will either make their games Origin-exclusive or be more receptive to working with EA in the future, and it'll force multiple people who want to give the developers the maximum amount of money to create Origin accounts, which they might even start to use for the purchase of other games as well. Very clever, and certainly a more healthy way of doing business than what EA are normally known for.

This is their bid to compete with Steam's Indie-game market/distribution; nothing more.
It's not a stroke of genius on their part when they're just copying someone else to start with.

I hope and pray that most indie developers will see how supporting EA is ultimately a bad idea.

Smart move by EA, for sure. They are trying to appeal to a segment of the gaming market they really haven't tried to before.

With that being said, there might be some push back from people that are willing to buy, but don't want anything to do with EA. As long as there are other options for a game than Origin, I think we will see people drastically favor that something else instead.

They are not giving free plantform for kickstarter developers, they are giving them a free 90 day trial, and probably ask for a 5 year contract, so you end up paying even more after 90 days.

Let's see how BioWare fare after mayor success of their last project in few months, one year.
Then we can ponder how a small indy developer would in similar situation.
Uh, I was way overly optimistic ...

There are news today of EA/BioWare "restructuring" Austin studios, talk of 200 people being let go. :(

I could probably explain the reasons why I will never get Origin but I'm pretty sure its the same thing everyone else has said, EA is just a turrible company.

Don't forget that if you have an EA account linked to xbox you can't UNLINK it or change the username / email on it.
