First of all, I'd like to say what the hell.

Second, I'd like to introduce to you the producers of the game - EA.

Third, I'd like to show you the trailer: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/43684.html?rdir=1&

Is this going to be another God of War? Where a bunch of randomly selected bits and pieces of Greek Mythology are crammed together and then changed? Worse still, this game looks to be a third-person gore-filled action game: assuming that the armour-clad warrior shoving the crucifix into a shade's head is Dante. I just know they'll have Satan (Dis if you want to be all pretentious like myself) as a last boss with one of those zelda-esque 3-hits to kill things - it fits pretty well considering what Satan is described as in Inferno.

Now I've read Inferno (not the whole comedy, as I did a dissertation on the first and really couldn't face the other two after I'd finished) but I don't think I'm an expert on it. However, I'm pretty sure Dante wasn't a super-powered God-knight who killed sinners in Hell (as if they weren't already punished enough). There's bugger all action in it anyway as far as Dante is considered. Oh yeah, he sees a few bits of action here and there with some pretty gruesome punishments and whatnot, but he hardly participates in it himself. I know for a fact that he doesn't kill anyone. It isn't even a literal book, it's an allegory! It was meant (as far as I understand) to explore the possibilites of evil in the soul as well as entertain people since hundreds of years ago it was actually funny to read!

I'm one to judge a game before it even shows a gameplay video, and this has just pissed me right off. Call me shallow or pessimistic or whatever you want, but I can't see anything good coming out of this at all. The Inferno is no basis for a video game, in my opinion. But what about yours?

Yeah, I'm not sure how they'll pull that off.

Wow, I just lost about 100 brain cells after watching that trailer. In no way shape or form is that representative of the Inferno or any other work of Dante for that matter.

Yeah, it is pretty ridiculous. I've never read the book, but as I understand it, as far as we can tell from the trailer, the only real similarity is the name. And killing a demon-thing by stabbing a crucifix in it's head? Absurdly cheesy.

And also, this was pretty funny: http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/

Dante's Inferno is a great book, and EA is going to fuck it up. That's the bottom line.

Edit: It looks like it could be fun to play, but why would you want to take a great piece of literature and make it into a video game that seemingly has nothing to do with the actual book?

They're making a violent action game based on the story of a guy's personal spiritual growth and biting criticism of the culture of his time period? Brilliant. Just great.

And, sure, while I could see fighting in a hell loosely based on Dante's Inferno, why did they have to go and screw up Limbo? Limbo wasn't a violent place, it wasn't a bad place, it wasn't anything like the other circles. It wasn't the place you wanted to be, but it wasn't horror, violence, and punishment. Just an air of some depression, but otherwise fine.

Good lord, next year they will probably do Paradise Lost.

Upgrade your weapons! Battle hordes of quasi-mythological creatures! Have sex with your daughter and father the physical embodiment of death and decay! All while gaining extra points for making the player wonder whether or not Satan is a tragic hero, or just a villain!

It will be terrible but i will still buy it.

How can a ballad with not much written by a man who spent time in a mosestry become an action game i do not know.

I could see a decent game using the descriptions as a setting, and maybe that's what they'll do. Trying to nominally follow the books or use Dante as a main character is kind of silly, though I suppose there are games guilty of worse.

Fundamentally, I don't know that an action game is the way to go. A survival horror type game would be much more compelling, in my mind. They could even parrot a sort of Orpheus / Eurydice story, where a person descends through the levels of hell to save a tormented loved one. Plus, then you could have that same sort of demoralizing plot twist at the end where, surprise, the loved one stays in hell!

It's gunna be like another Jerhico. Only worse. It has nothing whatsoever to do with the actual comedy, but thanks to devil may SUCK (see what I did there?) the name Dante just kinda means 'badass' in video games to people who don't know what they are viewing. So Dante's Inferno? To someone with no previous knowledge on the topic, that sounds like a bad-ass demon killing game.

I'm sure its been said but Dante's Inferno is not something I feel is meant to be a game. Ive read it and to me this take away what its about, its a one of my favorite things to read and to see it be made into what I assume will be a hack and slash title just makes me sad.

My God...they ARE running out of ideas aren't they?
Give it a few years--they'll be making games out of all the literature we read in high school:

Lord of the Flies: Piggy's Revenge
Heart of Darkness: Mistah Kurtz He Dead
Invisible Man: You Got Raped by Santa
Hamlet: Getting Thee to the Nunnery
Romeo and Juliet: A Curse Upon Both Houses

Actually, yeah, I think you are.

Did anyone else think that the weird clawed baby creature was basically the same thing as the baby necromorphs in Dead Space? *sigh* EA was starting to redeem itself with that game, and now this.

we won't know anything for sure until we get more information. So don't "abandon all hope" just yet.

Nope I think it could do okay. So what if it's not close to the source material I still think it would be fun slaying endless demons in 9 versions of hell.(if I interpreted right)

looks good. Dante's Infirno is a great story. never really understood why it was called The Divine Comedy but, oh well.
It was originally written in Italian; at the time, a serious poem would be written in Latin, held as a superior langauge, and be classified as a "tragedy". Italian was generally used for lighter, mundane poems, referred to as "comedies". The current definition of the word has little to do with it.

Regarding the game: argh.

That is all.
