So later this year EA have a few good titles coming out; things like Spore and Dead Space; and I'm looking forward to both. The thing I like about them is that they are games. Proper games, from the outlook. They are trying out new things, and appealing to a whole mess of people that EA have angered with all the things that they've done to anger people (I don't know a whole lot about this, but I think they've been buying companies? Also tore up The Orange Box for no apparent reason).
But, as you've probably heard, Spore's Creature Creator has been released as a demo (for £5 in Britain - I have no idea how that translates to dollars, probably around $8 I'd imagine) and also as a free demo of a demo. That was pretty confusing for me, because I've never paid for a demo, it almost seems like it defeats the point of having a demo if you're going to charge people to play a small slice of a game.
So now, Dead Space. Here's what I was thinking it would be like: a little like BioShock, in the sense that there's this fascinating back-story and characters in a very atmospheric world where the mystery of how it happened is unravelled intricately, piece by piece as you progress through the game. But now, I've heard about an animated prequel to the game called "Dead Space: Downfall" that contains allegedly 'crucial back-story to the game', which punches my hopes for this game straight in the gonads because if there isn't a compelling back-story to discover and you are just thrown into the deep-end at the beginning, the game will suffer heavily in the story (which is what it is touting as very emotional and deep). If it turns out not to be important to the game, then it begs the question, "What are you playing at, EA?" There isn't just an animated movie though, there's also dev-diaries (a la Fable 2) and an animated comic on the marketplace that explain everything that's already happened.
But what do you think?
