Watching the castle eat the queen in battle chess, and her high-pitched shriek in like 2 bit sound. God that was awesome.

Lemmings, Commander Keen, Secret Agent: The Hunt for the Red Rock Rover(not a particularly good or notable game, but it comes to mind somehow), Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure, SimCity 2000, Catacomb Abyss, Chex Quest...

Oh and also a bunch of edutainment. Oregon Trail II and Gizmos and Gadgets.

I know you said gaming memory (singular), but as far as chronology goes I can't remember what the first was.

First Game I played was gauntlet legends, for the N64. Why don't they make a gauntlet for the Xbox 360 or PS3, or if they have, please inform me

Hehe, playing 'Freddies Rescue Roundup' - all in monochrome. Totally awesome, though the music did grate after a while.

Zork would be the next one. For those that don't know, it's completely a text game - that's it, not one picture....ever. It also had a very dark sense of humor and rather made fun of you when you where dying during an attack or when you did succeed at dying. And because it was only a text game you couldn't see around the next corner at who was going to attack you next - making each room you went into almost a nail biting experience.

And this answer should show how old I really am.

I never had a console growing up, just a commodore 64 and ooold PCs.

So my first is either olympics or 4x4 racer on commodore 64, or Might and Magic 1 on PC.

*Casts mind back 20 odd years..*

I believe it was either a knock-of Space Invaders game my brother owned, or a game of tennis on a games machine that plugged into the TV. I remember it had paddles like the Atari 2600, but it was orange. Heck, I can't remember that period too well, it was like, 1983 or something.

playing on the old brick Nintendo. A game about a boy and a white blob that would change shape when you fed him jelly beans. still remember the theme music.
"A Boy and his Blob"

The theme song almost sounded like Indiana Jones for a min.
