So I was playing Mass Effect yesterday, and I got to planet Virmire. After the driving section I got to the point where

You confront Wrex about blowing up the facility, and then are forced to kill him. I didnt have high enough charm or intimadate, nor had I done the family armour quest

For those who havent played up to this point, "All The Evil" happened and I didnt have the points nor the correct mission to stop it.

So after trying to find a way around this (I couldnt find a way to return to the ship), I accepted what happened and went on. But after an hour I felt bad about it and stopped playing.

At this point I had been playing 20 hours, but I found an old save file that was from 10 hours. Ive saved over my other save and am starting at 10 hours.

(TLDR) So, whats the earliest save youve gone back to in a game?

Hmm...considering that I save every 5 minutes or so, 5 minutes back. I can't go back further, because I never have a save from further back.

Except for my "safe in town" save in JRPGs, in case I'm unprepared in a "can't escape" dungeon. So I don't get stuck in the dungeon. Never had to use them, though.

I overwrite a single save file every time, usually. Ever since that time I tried to clean out the Morrowind saves...Took me 20 minutes to delete them all. So many saves...

Yeah...I'm not really the "immersion" type, so saving is always in the back of my mind.

I once played a game of Dragon Age while using console commands, but it eventually got boring so I loaded a save from about 20 hours before.

I save every 10 minutes or so, and tend to alternate between 2 save slots, so I always have a 10 minute fall-back point if everything goes to shit, and a 20 minute one if it's something I just can't handle at that point in the game. It's a little annoying if, for example, you're in the OP's position and don't have an early enough save to avoid the consequences, as happened to me, but otherwise, it's sensible backup protocol.

Although screwing around with the internal clock of various systems has caused me to play 2-3 hours that were subsequently lost in the ether as games have decided my saves weren't recent enough to load...

Well, when I played Morrowind I used to have to restart every forty hours or so because of the 'corpse bug'.

It depends. If it is a game I know I'll play again, I don't bother going back. But for games like ME, where I'm trying to get a "Perfect" save file to port into the next game, I've gone back several hours to redo something I messed up.

I don't know if I'd go back 10 though...

I ended up having to restart about 16 hours back from Prince of Persia: SoT. To elaborate, there are certain jumps that take a small sliver of health even if you land them, which was all I had left at the time.
