I don't mind having to unlock my cheats. Just as long as it's not one of those "Beat the game on the hardest difficulty to unlock a cheat that makes the game absurdly easy" deals. You know, those ones where you do everything in the game and end up getting something that would've made all that crap you went through a walk in the park (like Shadow the Hedgehog's Shadow Rifle...).

Yeah that was my first thought. If something takes skill to unlock then why not? Push button codes are dumb in most games because they don't take skill at all.

I never earn cheats. If i cant do something no matter how hard i try, i then look for cheats. If i have to unlock that unlimited life cheat, Ill just give up.

Ragtime cheat in COD 4 was perhaps the best cheat I've ever earned. I'm for them.

blame achievements and online play for the lack of cheats

Perfect Dark 64 and Goldeneye 64 have the best cheat system,
To unlock them you have to finish levels on a high difficulty in an insanely short amount of time.
Then while they are on you cant earn more

Gungrave: Overdose had a pretty good one, and you had to have ridiculous endgame stats for the best cheats, like the invulnerability cheat you needed to complete every level without losing any health (which is difficult to do even on easy since in later levels you'll be fighting wave after wave of 30 dudes and never have a chance to recharge your shield)

or you could just beat the entire game on Kick-ass difficulty (the hardest difficulty) and you'd unlock all of them, but I couldn't even beat it on Hard to unlock Kick-ass, one spray of tommy gun fire from a first level gangster was enough to lower your shield down to critical level, so I don't even want to think about what would happen on something harder then that (I assume it would involve RAEG and needing to buy a couple new controllers)

Like Uncharted 2? That's the only thing that comes to mind.

Fucking Goldeneye 64 did this when it released almost 13 years ago. Despite what EVERYONE seems to think I did not find Uncharted that fantastic and found it did very little new.

No one, not even the people who liked it, found Uncharted to do anything new. Uncharted 2 was significantly better and got dozens of game of the year awards, but still, no one said it did anything new becasue it didn't. It combined shooting with climbing and puzzle solving. That's it.

Also, you could find this system of earning your cheats in a lot of Naughty Dogs (and insomniacs) earlier games. See: Jak series and Ratchet and Clank.
