This isn't new news, but apparently Mazlan Othman is expected to be tasked with coordinating humanity's response to an extra-terrestrial visit, if ever required. My question is, is it really this simple?

If we really did come across aliens, who weren't the 'kill all humans' type, is everyone just going to sit back and let her speak for earth on everyone's behalf?

So discuss Escapees, discuss!

I don't think anyone would just sit back with a single individual doing all the talking, I'd expect some council or something with the people in power if everyone doesn't freak the fuck out first.

There is only one true ambassador for Earth and he thinks this is an outrage!

I nominate 1 of 2 People to be our Ambassador:

1) Morgan Freeman

2) Stephen Hawking

Either one of those two need to be our Ambassadors for Earth. No one else could handle it as well as those two.

Our ambassador is not J.K. Simmons?

I am disappointed! He already has the perfect diplomatic response to bulls#$%.

Hell, he even has experience as the president of the United States!

actually, screw that. Ambassador is far too low of a position for someone of his caliber. He deserves to be the ruler of the world.

the detection of alien life is becoming more and more likely
Words cannot express how pathetically vague this statement is simple becuase I do not possess an infinite understanding of the universe. If anything, ETs are more likly to find us than we're to find them.

WHy don't we just modify Stephen Hawkings' voice synthesizer to sound like Morgan Freeman? Best of both worlds!

Well obviously it would have to be Morgan Freeman. Because he is God.

See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ch5MEJk5ZCQ

To avoid intergalactic religious warfare!

On a serious note however, Grouchy Imp is possibly correct our only way to communicate would be via Maths, or even some form of science. But I would choose Hawkings as a man who has trouble communicating with other humans (that machine isn't exactly quick) And possibly a nice show to the aliens that even those of us who are not perfect specimens of humanity are capable and showing we are... maybe a bit better than other animals who leave the weak to die.

I think Hawking would be a surprisingly excellent choice.

Meh, the odds of us needing an ambassador anytime in the next century are rather pathetically small. Not because of a lack of ET life, but rather the odds against a space faring race being close enough to pop by for a visit/talk.

Given that our only likely way of communicating with aliens would be through mathematic principles, I second Hawking.
I agree, we don't need someone who speaks english well (unless they have already studied our language and learnt it) so Hawking would be the wise move.

I think we should either get Keith David or Morgan Freeman as Ambassadors.
The aliens will feel that we are a strong race but will also feel oddly calm.

... a team of those two would make my day.
Possibly add the two Shepard voices to that team.

Maybe the Cockney Saints Row voice too, love that guy.
I only hope that I will be able to see Aliens contact us at one point. *sigh*

EDIT: But in all seriousness I don't mind this choice.

Can I just second this one? It's the perfect solution.

A goldfish.

The candidate only has to be terrestial, after all. A goldfish is very unlikely to cause any trouble in the space UN, at least.

Well, it's too bad the planet Earth itself can't be Earth's ambassador...

But, seriously, why can't Earth's ambassador be a Gibson keyboard?

If the alien encounter is ANYTHING like in the movie Close Encounter of the Third Kind, then this instrument will make the perfect Earth Ambassador...

Then, in a "joking" way, let this guy play that Earth Ambassador...
