Earworms and you

So, lately I've been having a bit of an earworm problem. At least once a day, a song gets stuck in my head for several hours. Usually it's Dark Horse by Katy Perry, which is terrible, since I hate the song. A lot of times, the earworm is a song that I don't know the name of. Sometimes looking it up and finding out its name helps me get rid of it, and, if I'm lucky, never have to deal with it again. The songs whose names I do know, are an entirely different story, though.

Do you guys get earworms? Do you have an earworm problem? Which song is currently stuck in your head?

Basically, this thread is a support group of sorts for the earworm-infested.

How ... how do you hate "Dark Horse"? That was, like, one of the best songs off Prism. ;p

OT: It happens all the time with me. The songs are usually catchy pop songs. Currently it's "Burning" by Mia Martina. C'est la vie.

All the damn time. Usually of songs I don't care for. Last week it was Bye Bye Bye by N'Sync. Yesterday I had Nevermore by Alesana in my head. At least I like that song.

It usually happens with pop songs more than songs I enjoy for some stupid reason. I hate my brain sometimes.

It happens from time to time, my latest one is Amazing Horse by Weebl.

Of course it's at its worst when it's some crappy popsong that's playing everywhere.

Yeah, it also happens to me a lot with pop songs, but usually they're pop songs that are somewhat different from other songs. Like "Dark Horse", "Pompeii" by Bastille, or "Flute", that one EDM song with the pan flute hook. Sometimes they're different in the language used and then it's really hard to look them up if I don't speak the language (looking at you, "Désenchantée"). The worst earworms are the ones with no lyrics, though. Really tough to look them up if I don't know the name.

I've had the entire soundtrack from Once More With Feeling (the musical episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer) in my head all week. I keep catching myself singing the songs and everything. Tried listening to it properly, then finally resorted to watching the episode earlier today, but no joy.

Don't get me wrong, I love the episode, but it's getting old by this point.

Quite a few anime songs at the moment. They're kind of designed to be ridiculously catchy in the first place I suppose

The first Sword Art Online opening is floating around in my head along with the Watamote ending. SAO has some excellent quality animation and that does help the song to stick and well, the second is Tomoko singing about her life and her VA is amazing at getting her character across. Listen to the full version, she sounds like she's undergoing a mental breakdown after the halfway mark, it's hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time.

I would post some Kill la Kill music but the openings are getting copyright locked pretty bad, must be one of those times. The second opening is awesome by the way, I heavily recommend watching Kill la Kill, especially if you like Gurren Lagann as they basically do a Gurren Lagann to the magical girl genre. AKA they open it as a parody and by the end of episode 24 it's the best magical girl show IN the magical girl genre.

I have a bad habit of getting the Inspector Gadget theme stuck in my head. It's an insidious melody.

Admit it, just mentioning it has it bouncing around your head right this second, doesn't it? Get ready for 3 to 4 hours of Bum-ba-dum-pa-dum-bump Hoo HOOOO!

A lot of Vocaloid songs are this for me. Last month it was Rolling Girl, this month it's Eazy Dance. Fortunately for me, I love Vocaloid songs, so it just encourages me to listen to them more. :p

Occasionally. And they're always songs I hate. It's just maddening when a song I dislike just keeps running itself through my mind. I usually try to find a better song to get it out of my head or just try focus on something else.

Most of the time, it's some one-hit-wonder pop song that everybody but me seems to like. Like Gangman Style or Happy (which, to its credit, isn't entirely bad. Most pop songs today can go burn in hell) or whatever the hell is the next 5 minute fad, usually being talked about by annoying teenagers on radio stations situated in Essex. I swear, you could replace them with peanuts, and it's actually be better.

That, or Aretha Franklin screaming at me, 24/7

Well, I wasn't expecting this thread to be about music. Sort of glad that it is, though, and not about ear parasites.

Yeah, I get songs stuck in my head quite a lot. Half the time, I like it and it's because I have been listening to that song non-stop.

Like this one, right now!

Other times, I'll hear someone singing a song, or hear it on the radio, once and my brain immediately plans the rest of its day. Rihanna - Diamonds was one recent example. God, I can't stand that song.

Usually I'll at least know the song. It's very rare that one gets stuck in my head and I don't know what it is.

Are earworms necessarily bad? Because I get a lot of songs stuck in my head and I enjoy them.

Currently, I have this some by this guy named Aloe Blacc. Never heard of him before today but I love his song. I've got it on repeat on youtube right now.

I stopped getting earworm problems right when I started giving said earworm problems earworm problems... How do I do that, you ask?

That's basically how I give earworm problems earworm problems...

Then again, I end up turning it into a rap somehow, even if the original song was, in no way, a rap song in the first place...

Ughhh for the past week I've had the South Park version of the Game of Thrones intro stuck in my head... It's not only really annoying, but have to be really conscious of not singing it aloud in public.

My normal solution to earworms is They Might be Giants' "Dr Worm". That song is NORMALLY like an earworm cleanser, not only will it get the old song out of my head, but it doesn't get stuck there itself. Good ol' Dr Worm...

"Bad Romance" by Lady Gaga has been stuck in my head for like six months.

Recently, it's been "Full Circle" by Aerosmith. It's not a horrible thing to have stuck in my head, but it's far from my favourite 'Smith song.

And also, the Spider-Man theme. OR more appropriately, the Spider-Pig theme.

For the six people who don't know what I mean.

Damn. Damn damn damn! Someone mentioned OMWF. Now it's going to be stuck in my head for a month.

Though in fairness, I get a certain song stuck in my head upon any permutation of the phrase "I've got a theory."

The problem is, this is how I get sick of songs I like.

Not necessarily, but when you have any song stuck in your head for long enough, it starts to bug you.

I'm having an earworm of the song "It's dangerous to go alone" for like a week now and it's starting to get a "little bit" old*coughs*. Besides that I typically get earworms of horrible pop songs like "Hello" or "Call me maybe". Which is just awful because I hate those songs. On the other hand I often have earworms of songs I like, often of only a part in a larger song I like so some specific arrangement or something. Sabaton is notorious for this in my case, so many potential earworms..."Gott mit uns" I had stuck in my head for I don't know how long. Also I tend to get earworms out of the blue of theme songs from either TV series or games from my youth like the One Must Fall theme or Deus Ex - Synapse (The Hong Kong streets/market one). Oh and "Ferien in Algerien" by Knorkator. It's like Amazing horse in German and it's just...ARGH.

How to deal with it? Either listen to the song in question until it's gone while optionally loudly sining along or replacing it with another even more catchy earworm.
