So I'm staring at my games collection and wondering what to play, I've narrowed my choices down to finishing Dead Space 2 (playing on Hard) or playing Killzone 3 multiplayer.

Killzone 3 won for a couple of reasons. First is that I've completed the story mode on medium and am currently playing through it every now and then on Veteren when I feel like a challenge. And second is that any online game that I can grab an enemies face and smash his goggles into his eyes to kill him is, for obvious reasons, a barrel of laughs and massive fun.

Dead Space 2 lost, but not because of what you might think, I don't know the ending of Dead Space 2 yet and really want to know what happens without using the Internet and really want to play it to find out what it is. I love the gameplay of Dead Space; third person, over the shoulder shooter with jetpacks, dismemberment physics and weaponised carving tools are all plus points in my book, but Dead Space fell down when I tried to challenge myself in it. DS1 had a perfect veteran mode, just hard enough to keep me on my toes but just easy enough to play through without dying too much. But this is where DS2 falls down for me, because I'm playing on hard level, it is obviously hard, but it's a game where you can't counter everything REASONABLY in one attempt.

In DS1 I could sneak into a room and be ambushed by 3 super/black necromorphs, 2 of those wall crawling baby things with 3 tentacles and that thing that reanimates bodies into more necros, and while it would take careful aim, sharp eyes and enough Red Bull to no longer care, I could pass the room in one attempt and still with a reasonable amount of health and ammo to take the odd necro vent-jump in the small corridors.

In DS2 however, I am currently stuck in a level I can't remember because I haven't played it in months, but after doing the fucking ridiculous space elevator level where you get assaulted on all sides by tentacles and get maybe 2 hits before dying (which I can imagine would be super fun on easy mode, fire, swing round, fire, collect ammo drop, twitch from left to right to see where the next one is coming from, but on hard it's just bullshit), I got to some room afterwards with maybe 5 ammo for my plasma cutter and 7/8 physics javelins and I can't get past it because it's way too hard and there are way to many enemies for for 5 bullets and my massive Issac boot to take on.

So do you feel the same? Do you play games on easy first (or only) and then the hardest level, or vice versa?

As such, Dead Space 2 is still gathering dust, despite me wanting to know the ending. I haven't actually checked, but there might be a way to alter the difficulty halfway through the game. Which is what I'd do, but killing British space nazis with portable homing mortar rocket launchers wins every single time.

I don't really lean one way or the other. Sometimes I enjoy extremely hard games, other times I prefer to just sit back and enjoy the ride. On games that have difficulty settings (something that seems to be getting progressively rarer) I generally go with normal first, then move on to higher difficulties. I'll rarely touch the easy option unless I'm getting frustrated.

With certain exceptions of course.
That's basically how I play most new games I get, also with exceptions.

Play on Normal or Hard first, then skip through Easy. Games like Persona 3 are hilarious that way.

Usually, I play normal, then leave a game, but when I come back to it, I sometimes just want to blast through having a laugh.

I will play hard mode eventually, but I don't like hard modes that are hard because you die too easily. Make weapons less effective, give enemies more health, make ammunition a rare commodity forcing me to beat my way through the horrific world, but don't kill me for making the same mistake twice.

Sorry, British Space Nazis? Is this Killzone (sorry I'm an XBox man myself)? Sounds pretty crap.
Anyway, I always play the game on easy first, and then work my way up through the difficulty levels whenever I can be bothered (for me, this is a great way to increase the longevity of the game). But it really depends on whether or not I want a challenge or a stress reliever (a.k.a. Prototype on easy), or an actual challenge, in which case I play on the hardest difficulty.

I play a game on normal mode. If I beat the game and replay it then I will usually bump it up since I've seen everything once. Some games *cough*prototype*cough* are so ridiculous on normal mode that I'm not even willing to get near the hard modes.

I start on hard, cuz 'why would you wire yourself to suck' (Athene). Then if I get my teeth smashed in, I take down the difficulty 1 notch, just before the point where controllers are thrown ;)

I have the most fun if a standard encounter will kill me if I isn't careful. So I usually go for the second hardest difficulty.

I playon hardened/heroic/whatever they call next to hardest now, then if I like the game and am up for the challenge I replay on the hardest setting. Was disappointed with myself though, had to turn CoD BlOps down to normal the other day. Damn PS3 controller not being a 360 controller.

OT: Difficulty without relying on bullshit is the thing. Avoiding enemies with one hit kills, insanely damage resistant ones or excessive weapo/tactic requirements. If they use any of those they weren't trying hard enough to find better solutions.

I play for story not challenge but it's rare I'll go below normal. I only go easy when I want to just tear through the gameplay.

MGS2 is a good example. I completed it on Normal then brought it down to very easy so I could basically sprint through the game so I could try and figure what the fuck was going on. It didn't help.

Never been one for being challenged by the higher difficulty settings. Normal works fine for me, mainly 'cause I dislike growing frustrated with games that I'm playing for enjoyment/relaxation and I find failure frustrating and annoying.

Consequently, I'm a difficulty setting coward and proud of it.

Sometimes I agree with you. It really depends on the game. I picked up Just Cause 2 on pc yesterday (for 7.50!) and have been enjoying my time immensly with it. Playing on casual with a trainer giving my infinite ammo, unbreakable ropes, and multiple ropes is just brilliant. Otherwise it starts to feel like the game is getting in the way of me having fun.

For me it depends on the type of game, if its a shooter I go normal, or easy if the enemies have magic vision, with creativity based games, such as minecraft, I go easy at first then ramp up the difficulty later, with stealth games such as splinter cell I start with the hardest difficulty to keep me focused on stealth and cut down on the urge to shoot everyone.

Since I usually play a game for it's story, I usually play on Easy, then to see how hard it truly is, I play on the hardest difficulty available. Crysis 2's Supersoldier was laughably easy for me, mainly because of Stealth.

For incompetent people I'm sure they are, but as you know we are not all the same, so give us difficulty selection and we can all be happy.

It REALLY depends on the game for me.

Easy preferred: games where you fuck around in, like Just Cause 2, Saint's Row and others. There's not really a challenge to these games, but it's so much more fun if you feel like some kind of god in a playground.

Normal preferred: RPGs. But this is mainly in the beginning. I'd like to get a feel for these games before I tamper with the difficulty. If I mastered the gameplay and feel like it's too little of a challenge, I crank it up.

Hard preferred: first person shooters and action/survival horror games. I play these games for the challenge and the atmosphere. And seriously, what good is a survival horror game if you're just happily slaughtering the masses the game throws at you. Dead Space 2 wasn't THAT hard to begin with, so playing it on Hard (I'm sorry, HARDCORE) mode felt a lot better to me. My god, hardcore mode... >_< But it felt AWESOME when completed.

I'm not ashamed to say I'll tone down the difficulty if I'm sucking at a game, tho I make a point to always start on Medium. If a game doesn't give just the right amount of challenge and fun for me on medium then I'll tone it down for the sake of fun, because at the end of the day, that's all we really want from our games.

I start out at Medium, then play on Hard and then on Very Hard. And then down to Easy to have laughs.

I played Bioshock and Dead Space 2 following that formula. It was awesome fun.
