Is it possible? To have all the cliches of a JRPG (cheesy dialogue, status ailments, team of people you must train equally) with all the chicles of a Western RPG (open world, character creation, serious tone)?

If such games exist please suggest some for me.

Edit: changed the examples you buggers.

Western RPG's don't need guns. [sub]I'm such a smartass[/sub]

I don't think you could apply all the clichés from the two genres, since the clichés are what defines them, and so there would probably be a lot of things that wouldn't blend. But mixing some of the clichés, like Borderlands did with FPS's and RPG's, could maybe work.

I'm a little confused about the guns thing myself. I was not aware we were considering that a staple.

Anyway: No, I don't think so.
Mainly because the problem with what to call them?
JWRPGs? WJRPGs?
Yeah, you try to pronounce it!
Jawurpugs and wajurpugs.

Did that sound good?

Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy XII...

Yes, guns are such a staple of the WRPG genre >_>

Also, D&D? Last I checked that had status ailments and turn taking.

Gigantic sharp hair under armor of some kind, using giant oversized yet unflashy swords, go kill the 'one big evil' all over the multiple and wondrous open-world locations, join up with a party to be by yourself...

It kinda sounds like that old poem, "One Fine Day", spoiler'd below. So, no, I don't think it would work. Although, ironically enough, it would just be called an 'RPG'.

1. One fine day in the middle of the night,
2. Two dead boys got up to fight,
3. Back to back they faced each other,
4. Drew their swords and shot each other,

5. One was blind and the other couldn't, see
6. So they chose a dummy for a referee.
7. A blind man went to see fair play,
8. A dumb man went to shout "hooray!"

9. A paralysed donkey passing by,
10. Kicked the blind man in the eye,
11. Knocked him through a nine inch wall,
12. Into a dry ditch and drowned them all,

13. A deaf policeman heard the noise,
14. And came to arrest the two dead boys,
15. If you don't believe this story's true,
16. Ask the blind man he saw it too!

Mr. Robot is an indie game on steam with a battle system kinda reminding me of Final Fantasy games. It's mostly the turn-taking aspect that seems to be missing. It seems to appeal much more to Japanese people to be able to calmly think through their actions.

I find the main difference is the open/railroad storylilnes.

Have fun trying to hammer that square peg into the round hole.
But a round peg can go in a square hole!
