Hey guys I'm holding my 21st birthday next week,it's a semi-formal dinner with about 45 people. I'm trying to create an easy listening, not too heavy, not too soft playlist that will last about 3 and a half hours. Even though I'm tempted to throw in Slipknot and System of a Down, I realized my easy listening spectrum isn't as wide as I'd like it to. So if you guys can suggest some songs for the night that would fantastic.

To give you an idea of what I'm going for here is a sample play list:

Lifesize - A Fine Frenzy
Stop & Stare - One Republic
Make it with chu - Queens of the Stone Age
Nice dream - Radiohead
Don't look back in anger - Oasis
Revelry - Kings of Leon

Just as a point of reference as well I don't really want any songs to get any heavier than this:

Thanks in advance guys. I'm having a TARDIS cake, I'll send you a piece for every song you list. Of course you may receive it several years in the future.

I'd recommend stuff by Citizen Cope

This version of Sideways is actually found in an album done by Santana called Shaman, but I can't find the other version.

Other good songs are:

Awe
All Dressed Up
Fame

I'd post links, but Youtube won't play them inside my country. Which is especially ludicrous when the actual artist uploaded some of the videos himself on his own page.

Also, The Thrills

Might be a little too light for you but I Django Reinhardt makes great background music.

And I'd like to suggest these songs from other artists specifically.

When it comes to light rock it's tough to beat Led Zeppelin. :)

Try listening Acoustic (album) by The Cardigans. Bunch of easy songs (My Favourite Game, You're the storm, Communication) pick the one you like :D
The Smiths - Please,Please,Please Let Me Get What I Want
Arctic Monkeys - Cornerstone / 505 / The Bakery / Too Much To Ask / No Buses
Editors - Weight of The World

Also off the top of my head I'd say Muse, Lou Reed/Velvet Underground, Billie Holiday etc. Can't really decide on a particular song cause I'm not really an expert.

But don't overdo it. It's a party after all :p

Radiohead.
A few Radiohead songs are good, but most of it is so damn depressing. Those guys on tour again?
That's such a silly idea that everyone has of them. People just see Creep and think "Oh look, its one of THOSE depressing bands." They have way less depressing songs than you think.

I don't know mean their content, I mean their sound. Lucky is an optimistic song, but for the purposes of background music at a dinner party I wouldn't play it.

I listen to a lot of fingerstyle acoustic but I like a good old stadium rock ballad. One of my favourites is this from a band from my home town called Shihad.

Album version's much better than the video version so I'll add this Shihad track too.

Some of these songs may be a bit too soft but these are the ones I can think of:

The one ends a bit abruptly because it flows into the next song on the album called On The Run [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kj71MofUhLc], which is a bit more active as a song.

If this one's a bit too long you can listen to a shorter version here [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTEWlSTQ1RI] and see if that works better.

Hmmmm, I used the iTunes genius tool on 'Don't look back in anger' by Oasis to see what it recommends (from my music library):

The rest was loads of Muse, Coldplay, Gorillaz, Florence & The Machine and franz Ferdinand

I've been listening to this a ton lately.
It's fairly easy to listen to I guess...

That's absolutely brilliant, I've only gave Bucketheadland much listening but that song is incredible.

And for the OP: Try Joe Satriani, his best albums to me are Surfing with the Alien and The Extremist. This is maybe what you're looking for, some indie band ripped it off and apparently their version is way more famous.
