I've beaten Contra without dying (Konami Code? No thanks, don't need one)
I'm going to respectfully call bullshit, but agree with your overall statement :)

I beat Halo 3 but i never manage to find any of the skulls. What do they do?
Make enemies throw grenades almost all the time. Increase the size of explosions, make your shield only regenerate by melee'ing enemies, make you get almost no ammo from enemies.Enemies make all saving throws, so grenades bounce off them, they roll out of the way. Increase their rank, their armor and their amount of funny lines.Oh, and blind you. You have no reticule, no radar, no shield bar, no gun. Nothing on screen but the terrain in front of you. Nothing.

Thats to name a few of them.

Together, all skulls make a legendary run of Halo 3 the holy grail of FPS mastery.

Most people say that, but you have no idea just how obsessive I got with Contra. My brother and I had a very intense sibling rivalry so it became a game of one-upmanship. He said "I beat it without using the code!" and threw down the gauntlet.

I probably put 1000 hours into Contra back in 1989. Best part was when my brother and I decided to show off our collective skills to our friends (we co-op'd it without dying as well.)

A year later I got every bit as obsessed with Mega Man 2 and have flawlessly run that game as well. I just don't have that kind of time these days, and I think certain things you can only do when you're 12 or 13. Seventh grade was awesome (although my grades sucked thanks to all that NES time!)

What makes the old games seem so much harder than the newer ones is that in the old games, you got three, maybe four lives tops per game. If you were really good and got a high enough score, you might get awarded an extra life somewhere along the way. Once you ran out of lives though, you had to start back a square one. In todays games, most of them let you just go back to where you died or the start of the same level you were just on. The less you have to re-do the same parts of the game over again when you die, the easier it is. The ultimate example of this is games that have cheat codes that make you invincible. Unless they have really confusing puzzles, those games are super easy if you can't die.
