Not the most cheerful topic in the world but I thought I'd ask about the Escapist's perception of eating disorders. It's some sort of break from the perceived end of the internet.

When you hear the term do you just imagine an image-obsessed teenage girl who just needs someone to give her a sandwich or do you see the variety of eating disorders, which affect both men and women alike, that are a means of coping with emotional distress, or as a symptom of underlying issues?

Most people realise that there's a problem when they see something like this:


However, in my experience, many people do not see over-eating as a type of disorder.

Three of the main behaviors:
Self-starvation - by fasting and/or food restriction
Purging - by self-induced vomiting, over-exercising, or laxative abuse
Bingeing - by consuming quantities of food beyond what the body needs to satisfy hunger

So, how do you view people with eating disorders? Do you see vanity or deep psychological issues?
Do you know someone who has suffered/is suffering from an eating disorder?
Do you personally abide by the infamous Kate Moss statement that 'nothing tastes as good as skinny feels'?
Do you think that celebrities have a great degree of influence on young people when it comes to self-image, or are they a great source of 'thinspiration'?
