"i think ebay should ban them, if you want something that badly then sit there and wait for it to finish"

I DO sit there and wait for it to finish.

How do they do it in person? Doesn't it go "going once, twice..." and gives people a chance to do up it if they want?

Could make a system where the last bid has to be up for an hour before its sold to that person, but then auctions could take AGES. (but your shit would get sold at a higher price...)

I'd bet if its split second, its someone auto-bid catching up to the number they put in hours ago. As has been said, any number just gradually goes up to that. I'm sure half the reason thats in was to prevent sniping of everything, though it does do a bit of sniping itself.

Another good tactic is to watch number of bids on an item. Higher bid count means its more likely to be sniped.

Regardless, just make sure you watch when an item only has 30 or so minutes left.

as soon as you bid you've been out bid !!
Are you sure that it is a sniper and not that the person before you made a bid higher than yours? The current bid is not the highest bid, it is the minimum amount that beats the second highest bid plus a small increment,

e.g.
if the highest bid on the item is $30 and you were to then bid $35, the current bid will now change to $31. If someone else were to join in now and bid $32, you will instantly outbid them so that the current bid will still be yours but at the increased price of $33.
this is what i think it is, sniping is waiting till the very end and bidding a higher amount before it ends

what he's describing doesn't seem like sniping but someone with a higher bid already put in

They're assholes screwing over both you and the seller since no one get's a chance to bid over. What they should do is add more time maybe, 24 hours, so people has a chance to respond, unless the seller decides to settle for it. It's not about who lays the last bid. It's about who is willing to pay the most.

I find them a bit annoying when you think you're going to win something and loose last minute, rather than knowing earlier on that you're going to lose, but mostly I just think sitting there watching the item like that is a really sad-bastard thing to do.

Snipers are why i rarely use ebay. I usually end up paying exorbiant prices for anything i do win just to block them out. At least it's better now than it was in the old days of dial-up, when those priveleged few with broadband would own the ebay streets like chicago gangsters.

They're not doing anything wrong.

If I sound bored its because I'm let down that eBay doesn't allow people to sell lethal weapons. Except Hannah montana cds of course

You can make ebay automatically bid over. It's called a "maximum bid."
Huh? What happens if two people, let alone 20 people, uses it at the same time? Do you set a limit perhaps? If there is such a service why are people even complaining about sniping? It can't be a problem then can it?
