Ever talk to someone about something, and they don't know what you're talking about? Does it ever happen regarding something that the person in question really should know, and just leaves you thinking "This person needs some education"? Does to me.

For example; I recently got pretty much the entire Blue Oyster Cult collection from my uncle, and I put a couple of songs on my phone. I was at school and people were playing music, so I told them to turn off their music, so I could "play something classic." I started playing (Don't Fear) The Reaper and everyone just looked at me. "Who is this?" they asked. "Blue Oyster Clut" I replied. "Who?" At this point I just stared at them, and then I shouted "Educate yo'self!" Then I left, I couldn't bear to sit there anymore.

Wow. So rather than take the opportunity to introduce them to something new that they might enjoy, or to share a bit of yourself, you chose instead to be an arrogant tool.

I can only hope that when you encounter someone who knows something you don't, they do the same to you.

Wow ok. That wasn't really called for. I actually don't know what to say to that, that's the most directly I've ever been insulted on this site. It's weird that you can call me an arrogant tool, when you weren't even there. I did try and give them the experience, but I was quickly drowned out by their music again.
I mean wow.

Don't want to be called a jerk, don't present yourself as one. By your own declaration, you shouted at people because they didn't know something you did. It doesn't get much more rude than that.

I shouted, sure. In a joking manner. They are my friends, we're teenagers, we do stuff like that. I know I didn't say that before, but you shouldn't judge me so quickly.

So you're saying if a band is more than 10 years older than your date of birth, you shouldn't have heard of them? That's a bit narrow minded and i'm sure you wouldn't say the same thing about other bands.

I never implied that they shouldn't have heard of them. What I am saying is that you shouldn't simply assume that they have heard of it, and more to the point that you shouldn't think less of them because they haven't. There's no point in being that pretentious about these things. And yes, I would say the same thing about any other band. Sure I'd find it strange if someone would tell me they'd never heard of -I dunno- the Beatles or something, but I wouldn't think it a big enough deal to fret over it until I "couldn't bear to sit there anymore."

My point being that they quite experienced in the field of classic rock. I thought I was pretty clear about that.

Fair enough, but we can only judge your actions based on what you tell us.

And I would agree that it's surprising that people into classic rock were completely unfamiliar with such an iconic song.

What I am saying is that you shouldn't simply assume that they have heard of it, and more to the point that you shouldn't think less of them because they haven't. I understand your post, and I agree with you, it was perhaps an overreaction.

On a related note: At my summer job, I was talking with some of my co-workers, and I used the word "expansive" to describe something (I don't remember what, I think it was about a field) and they all though "expansive" isn't a real word, and that I made it up. I was like "...seriously guys?" I had to fired up dictionary.com to prove it.

So, them knowing two other bands from 'before their time' somehow justifies you throwing a fit just because they don't recognize one fourty-year old band you happen to like?

Also, knowing about Led Zep and Black Sabbath doesn't exactly make one "experienced in the field of classic rock". Granted, neither does knowing about Blue Oyster Cult, but that's not the point. Either way, my problem with your post wasn't whether or not they should've known any one band, but more the way you reacted to it.

I mean, come on. "You don't know this one old band so I can't even stand to be in the same room as you!" That's how your post came across. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but that at least sounds awfully pretentious. From the edits made to your first post I take it that wasn't your intention at all, but it does very much come across like that.

I've pretty much given up on thinking that everyone should know X part of Y culture.
Hell when I moved to Europe I was completely flabbergasted people here hadn't heard of really famous movies back in the states. Ie Back to the Future, Jurassic Park..etc.
Walking up to a random person in the states and them not knowing what it is would be shocking but out of like 100 kids in my class only 1 person heard of them, but hadn't actually seen the movies.

Not necessarily, but i'd expect most people to have at least a little knowledge of some music from before they were born, either from their parents, radio or wherever. There are just some songs you have to have heard just by living!

Take one of my friends for example:
I'll show her something, and she doesn't know what it is. I explain, then two seconds later, someone asks me about the same thing. She responds to them saying "How could you not know of this thing?"

I just told you I didn't think you were a dick, only that the first version of your post made you look like one. You exaggerated a bit and looked worse for it, but you explained yourself and as far as I'm concerned that's the end of it. I have no desire to insult you and I don't think you deserve to be insulted. Just... try to word your posts a bit more carefully next time you make a new topic. First posts always get a lot of attention, and if you're gonna set yourself up as the jerk (god knows I have, on occasion) just be prepared for argumentative and judgmental asses like myself to jump a the opportunity.

I just told you I didn't think you were a dick, only that the first version of your post made you look like one. I think you shouldn't see it as their responsebilety to educate themself. Rather if one has the knowledge, that person is responsible to educate others where the knowledge of something is lacking. Some things seem elementary to some but are unknown or complex to others.
If you don't like peoples ignorance on a field you carry knowledge (some people enjoy it to lift their egos) you should always struggle to share rather than point out.
