[...]I told them to turn off their music, so I could "play something classic." I started playing (Don't Fear) The Reaper and everyone just looked at me. "Who is this?" they asked. "Blue Oyster Clut" I replied. "Who?" At this point I just stared at them, and then I shouted "Educate yo'self!" Then I left, I couldn't bear to sit there anymore.
So you couldn't bear to be with people who didn't know a band that was popular decades before you were even born yourself?
Wow, I imagine you must be quite the popular fellow...
So you're saying if a band is more than 10 years older than your date of birth, you shouldn't have heard of them? That's a bit narrow minded and i'm sure you wouldn't say the same thing about other bands.
I never implied that they shouldn't have heard of them. What I am saying is that you shouldn't simply assume that they
have heard of it, and more to the point that you shouldn't think less of them because they
haven't. There's no point in being that pretentious about these things. And yes, I
would say the same thing about any other band. Sure I'd find it strange if someone would tell me they'd never heard of -I dunno- the Beatles or something, but I wouldn't think it a big enough deal to fret over it until I "
couldn't bear to sit there anymore."
