Just wondering how many people are squeamish at the sight of blood?

Today I'm giving blood in town (I always give blood around Christmas, dunno why), and I'm a little scared of needles too, so I always look away. But I'm not scared to look at my blood.

It's a little weird, if I'm bleeding, It doesn't bother me all that much, but if I see someone else's blood, I spazz and panic. xD

On a side note, I almost fainted last time and had to lie down (One other guy had a small fit O-o Scared the crap outta me, apparently he hadn't eaten or something) So anyone got any tips on how to prepare myself as well? ^^
Drink lots of water before you go in to donate. I give every time I'm able due to the red cross harassing me nonstop if I don't because I've got O+ blood. I've never really had an issue with panic/fainting/weakness but it saps the strength right out of me a couple of hours later. A good meal right afterward isn't a bad idea, either - the cookies and juice they give you isn't really enough.
:0 same!

I have O+ blood, they send me letters every month almost xD but I never get the guts to go until Christmas (I don't go to town often either)

*high fives for the same blood type*
*high fives right back*

Hehe, it kind of pisses me off that they call me/email/snail mail me so much but I like to think that every pint I give goes to some sick kids instead of the more likely scenario of it going to a drunk driver or gangbanger that done f*cked up.

Last time I had a blood test, I fainted when it was being drawn. Three reasons: no food, no drink, scorching hot weather.

So... best tip: eat, drink, don't have it done on a summer afternoon.

I recenetly had to get a blood sample taken... And while it didn't hurt or anything, I got dizzy and started to cold sweat. They took me to a bed where I could lie down and take the last sample... It went well but I didn't expect to feel that bad. I even said to myself it's no problem. But my body thought otherwise.

Other than that, I don't have a problem with it. It's, after all, just blood and a part of you.

I was an emergency room porter, and have been a first aid officer in the construction industry for some years now, I've got no problem with seeing my own blood but other peoples freaks me out, once a guy wearing glasses copped a cricket ball on the full to the eyes, he turned around and said "something is in my eye", I looked up to see that he had part of his frame hanging through his eye lid, I pushed him over, yelled out freak! and ran screaming from the pitch. I'm very squeemish.

Is it the sight of the actual blood that makes you squeamish? Or something a little more complicated? o.e

In my experience, people who are squeamish at 'the sight of blood' (Including me) have no problem with looking at plain ol' blood by itself, but a problem the way it pumps around your body. For example, the thumping of a heart. Though it varies from person to person.

I personally hate veins that I can see. OHH H god, just thinking about it makes me freak ;_;
I just can't stand the sight of protruding veins, or the sound of your pumping heart. It's a serious pain in the arse when watching biology videos. ^ A friend of mine fainted! It was the most perfect, realistic thumping sound of a heart Dx

As for blood, I never tire of it. If I could get away with it one of my tormenters remains would be sprayed across the walls in finger painted patterns.

First of all, good for you.

Secondly, that guy twitching after he's fainted. Could easily be me.

Tips: Eat a reasonable amount, drink a lot, take it slow, keep yourself occupied while they draw it out. Afterwards, give yourself time to recover.

Blood doesn't bother me at all really. Needles I dislike, but I'm not afraid of them or anything. I just don't like them.

I have been through 5 reconstructive surgeries (rigth hand), apendix, one to fix an exposed broken bone (man that hurt), and one on my leg (again broken bone), so I have seen plenty of blood...not afraid at all. I was fully awake during most of those operations, and I have seen my own hand totally opened (they had to replace one of my bones).

as for the ppl donating blood. good for you, I can't do, I am forbidden to donate blood due to the amount of surgeries I had.

I have no problem with the sight of blood, needles, the taste of blood (it's like biting down on a iron rod) or even the sight of myself bleeding from a nasty cut and the pain that comes with that. What I do hate, hate most of all, is the feel of blood.

I've given blood a few times now that I'm used to it, but the first couple I felt disgusted from the heat that the tube collecting my blood was radiating. It was like a mockery of man, my existance seperated by piece of plastic tubing. I felt it whisppering to me, as if a part of me is talking back but the plastic rubbing against my arm dilutes it's message, turns it into a mockery of life almost. It doesn't feel natural yet at the same time it is my blood, I liken it to having your arm ripped to shreds but only to discover that underneath is a titanium alloy, only much less dramatic and terrifying. But the worse thing is the heat, the blood feels far too hot to me. I don't know why but I feel like it should be colder, not like ice, but much colder than the stuff coming out. It doesn't help that the nurses tape the tube down along your arm, I would twist it around if I could.

I'm not sure about human blood, I have never had the misfortune of seeing a serious accident, but I'm not squeamish about seeing animals blood and insides. I'm not too bothered about my own blood; it actually tastes quite nice, I just hate it if I'm bleeding loads and it gets on clothes :( ***** to wash out...

I wanted to give blood but im scared of needles and hate my own blood, especially if there is lots, i can stand small cuts and nicks but not seeing tubes or bags of my blood being removed. URGH!
But yeah, eat something to keep your energy up, relax, read a book or use headphones or take a friend/relative to talk to to keep your mind away. Try not to watch anyone else (i know some places to have screens or seperate rooms but some don't)

Well, I'm in med school. So I really shouldn't be uncomfortable with blood, should I?

That's actually really cute, sky. It make me want to hurt myself in front of you to watch to go all squeamish so I can be like 'D'awwwww, she'ssocute~"

On a related note, I don't mind blood one bit.

Yeah, just eat and drink before and after and you should be okay.

As for blood, it doesn't bother me, nor do needles. Every time I've been stuck, shots or blood removal, I'll watch the needle go into my arm and watch the blood pour into the tubing or whatever. I've even had to calm a guy down who was giving me an IV because he wouldn't quit shaking.
