Eidos: New Deus Ex Game is "Kind of a Reboot"

David Anfossi of Eidos Montreal says Deus Ex: Human Revolution [http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=%22deus+ex%3A+human+revolution%22&x=0&y=0] is a standalone title that's "kind of a reboot" and will provide an identical experience regardless of the platform on which it's played.

It's not uncommon for PC and console gaming experiences to be considerably different, even across related titles. To some extent, the very nature of the hardware makes it unavoidable, and at times it's an intentional decision on the part of developers. core PC title [http://www.bioware.com]," according to Executive Producer Dan Tudge, and then doing a "true, actual conversion" of the game to take advantage of the strengths of the console platforms.

But Anfossi, the producer on Deus Ex: Human Revolution, says Eidos Montreal is taking the opposite approach. The new game is being developed in parallel on the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 to ensure that they'll be identical across the board.

"The experience will be the same on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. The same mechanics - everything is the same," Anfossi said in an interview with VG247 [http://www.vg247.com/2010/07/13/interview-deus-ex-human-revolutions-david-anfossi/]. "For Deus Ex, we decided to work on all platforms in parallel to give players the same experience."

"I used to work on previous games where we had lead platforms, and when we were close to the release date, we had to do a port," he added. "And believe me, you don't want to do that."

He also admitted that while there's "a lot of pressure" to live up to the legacy of the original game, surpassing it isn't actually the goal. "For us, it's kind of a reboot," he said. "We respect the universe, but we've got a new character, a new conspiracy and a new timeline. So, this is kind of a reboot, and it's a standalone title."

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is scheduled for release in March 2011.

I'm glad to hear that they're calling this a reboot, since it clearly had almost no linkage to the prior Deus Ex games given that it's set before it yet seems to showcase some significantly advanced tech from what was available in the original. I do love the art design, and whatever they call it, I'm anxious for some more cyberpunk gaming goodness.

If it's a reboot in the same way that Red Faction: Guerrilla was then I'm good.

Someone remind me why they are calling it Deus Ex at all (beyond the obvious, to get more sales and name recognition answer). Just to be clear I'm not complaining about it, it looks really fun so far. I just don't see what it actually has to do with Deus Ex beyond having cyborg's running around, which is hardly unique to the setting or what made it a big name.

Yeah yeah great, show us gameplay. I swear, if this is Mass Effect: Deux Ex, I'm going to firebomb Eidos.
Edit - Btw I read "same mechanics across all platforms" as "More like a shooter than like Deus Ex"

Hmmm, similar across consoles and the PC, sounds like they're all going to suck. Loved Deus Ex, but I tried to play it on the Playstation 2, emphasis on tried. Afraid the projects going to be bogged down because everything has work for both consoles and computers.

Well, not surprised. I am pretty sure it will still be good fun! I am looking forward to playing it none the less!

Well that's alright for me, usually when they port directly to PC the mouse and keyboard controls will seem awkward because they will simply map each controller function to a keyboard key. Also there will most likely be built-in unremovable mouse acceleration and smoothing involved, but I will use my xbox 360 controller so that won't bother me, I just hope that there is auto-aim because I feel crippled when I have to aim with my xbox 360 controller.

Reboot let's us pretend DX:IW never happened - so I'm all for it.
Well, being a prequel, it would be granted that Invisible War, and by the same token, Deus Ex, wouldn't have happened....yet. But out of everything, it's

"We respect the universe, but we've got a new character, a new conspiracy and a new timeline. So, this is kind of a reboot, and it's a standalone title."
that really worries me. What I've highlighted in bold above, along with the appearance of some super advanced tech and the fact the cityscape we've seen in the trailers appears decades ahead of the contemporary locations from a game set over 20 years later than Human Revolution, makes me wonder if there will be any connection to the other games besides the name and basic premise.

Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised, but I'm beginning to think the chance of any Versalife/UNATCO/Denton references will be quite slim. As I recall another Escapist saying, (as I probably misquote horribly here) it's looking likely this may end up just being a cool cyberpunk game we will will play anyway, if not a "proper" Deus Ex game.

I wonder if "stand-alone" means that Human Revolution won't get a sequel. I thought developers were all about milking brilliant game ideas dry building on previous successes. I don't mind at all. In fact, I'm happy. Deciding whether to do a sequel when you're making the original is important. Otherwise you end up with games like Bioshock 2, which apparently involved a lot of awkward retconning.

Of course, only in a perfect world could a developer be certain it would be able to make a sequel or not. Sales figures are still king.

EDIT: Nevertheless, I'm still very interested in this game. I only enjoyed playing demos of its predecessors. I regret not buying them and playing the full versions.

"Reboot"...generally that's code for the dev's going in their own direction, right?
Oh, well...so long as it isn't project snowblind or metroid prime, I'm cool with it.
(By that I mean depth-wise, I'm hoping for at LEAST bioshock, if not the original deus ex)

Read: "By catering to the weaknesses of the weakest platform we minimize production costs, but it's easier to sell the idea by calling it an 'equal experience.'"
