El Shaddai Wows Japan With Religious Blue Jean Combat

El Shaddai is in the running for the most gorgeous videogame ever to feature a main character wearing blue jeans.

The first thing I think of when I imagine a hero going up against fallen heavenly soldiers is rarely a guy in a pair of Levis. However, that's exactly what the main character of Ignition's El Shaddai: Ascention of the Metatron wears as he battles through a game marked by gorgeous, watercolor visuals.

El Shaddai tells the tale of an average blue jean wearing human caught in war between Heaven and the Fallen Angels. He must take care of the Fallen before a flood washes over Earth, using both his bare fists and a weapon called the Arch.

It's a third-person action game also with segments of 2D platforming and exploration, and is based on the story told in the Old Testament's Book of Enoch. If El Shaddai's amazing visuals look similar to Okami [http://www.amazon.com/Okami-Nintendo-Wii/dp/B000Z9A95M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1285124096&sr=8-1]'s, that's because Okami lead character designer Sawaki Takeyasu is working on it.

The game recently won the Tokyo Game Show's "Future Game of the Show 2010" award, voted on by attendees and then chosen by committee, which as a new franchise is said to be quite a feat. It's been in development for four years but will hopefully be out by 2011 on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Daaaaamn. Like the visuals. Now we just need multiplayer maps procedurally generated ala Audiosurf. Imagine. Mount and Blade melee system with more refinment and emphasis on movement, and a constantly changing map based on the music. Picture the chaos.

I think personal boundaries may be the only thing Japan understands less than Western religions.

Dramatic violence with no apparent goal beyond domination? Sounds like western religion to me!

A: Wow, that's frikkin' beautiful!

B: Wow. Just...wow. Has that man even ever heard the word 'Bible'? Seriously, next thing I know you're going to tell me Bayonetta was about Corinthians.

El Shaddai: Ascention of the Megatron
It's the MeTatron - the Voice of God, not the MeGatron - enemy of the Autobots. Although that would be interesting... as he gets close to the end, he gets corrupted by Dark Energon (sure, why not?) and instead becomes a giant robot? lol.

OT: The game looks pretty interesting. Fascinating art style, not too over the top combat, platforming and puzzle sequences...

I'm curious to see just how much of the Book of Enoch is incorporated and how much is added for dramatic/gameplay effect. We all know it can go badly both ways (I'm looking at you, Dante's Inferno).

What the suffrage is "The Book of Enoch"? Enoch was in the Old Testament for about ten verses.

It looks a lot more like the Book of Elijah.
