While looking through the bargain bin at my local best buy, i came across the game of the year edition of elder scrolls 3 for 20 bucks, and i thought it sounded like a good deal but resisted for 1 reason, i hated oblivion. I just couldnt get past how poorly done all the npcs looked and acted, and there were many small things that erked me. I was very surprised by this though, since i am a huge fan of the very similiar, fallout 3 (same developer, same kind of game design). I wanted to know if i would enjoy morrowind better, since it is on a different engine and such.

And on a side note, 5 looks frickin sweet!

It depends - Morrowind NPCs are generally interacted with through text boxes and don't have conversations about mudcrabs, so that's a plus. Personally, I find them to be a lot less "uncanny valley," but they definitely aren't realistic. With mods, you can have Morrowind looking as good or better than out-of-the-box Oblivion, depending on how much time you're willing to spend juggling shaders and the like. Also I'd generally put Morrowind quests as equal to or better than Oblivion quests, except in the case of the theives' guild stuff. (Theft, btw, does not work as well in Morrowind, in case you like to play a thief character.)

Have you tried Fallout New Vegas yet? I'd put it as a little better than Fallout for everything but exploration, but opinions differ.
already played and beat fallout new vegas, great game but not as good as 3 IMHO. They definitly really tried, having some really fantastic quests (i loved being a bouncer for the silver rush gun shop) but i liked the setting of a ruined DC better, since the mojave is already not the nicest of places to be. Plus, revenge on some guy who shot you is much less captivating then "your dads gone and you are being hunted, ESCAPE AND FIND HIM". plus i loved the whol *spoilers* old timey looking uncanny valley esque neighborhood where your dad was a dog, especially since i spent 10 min laughing my ass off as i punched the dog, punched the little girl, and even once tricked the dog into attacking the lil girl!

If you can accept that it is an old game, so it is not up to standards like we expect today.
Yeah it is good the basic mechanics underneath the game are solid. The graphics are.. well you can get a better graphic mod if you really want. The audio is pretty nice it has a nice story and once you are used to how it all works yes it is a great game.

It is an OLD great game so adjust your expectations. And $5 is pretty cheap for what you get.. allot of hours of fun.

I adored Morrowind and hated Oblivion, so please don't judge it based on its successor. It's an obviously older game, so if you care about dated graphics, stay away. But if you like a compelling narrative, interesting side characters, non-broken and customizable leveling system, great expansions, challenging combat, and over all fun game, it's great. I still pull it out from time to time.

Likely not. It's mechanics are not quite as refined, and the difficulty is scaled up a bit. Combat is based on a to-hit system, rather than the hit/miss of Oblivion's melee combat.

The game has a more interesting setting though, with more diverse scenery that borders on the fantastic (as opposed to the 'realistic' feel of it's successor.) The world also feels bigger, as fast travel is limited to city-to-city transportation.

Morrowind is a far superior game..but if its appearance that bothered you, you may be too shallow for Morrowind. If you want more depth and variety, and dont bother trying to use a weapon you only have 10 skill in, then you may like Morrowind.

Haha, I totally forgot how obnoxious combat is in Morrowind. Especially when you meet... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O21E_Vj1JbI&feature=related.

But if you're a caster, it's all good. You've got a lot more options than you do in Oblivion, except if you want to use mind control.
Ugh.

And to think that tosser Jiub takes credit and gets sainted for you single-handedly murdering the entire racer population.

Whether or it's better than Oblivion, it's only really worth it if you have time to play it. It won't really be rewarding if you can't spend a good amount of time on it, it's quite slow paced really. It also doesn't coddle like Oblivion, if you kill someone who isn't supposed to die you get a nice message telling you as much and inviting you to continue playing in a doomed world. Also, there's no Oblivion style scaling, if you wander into a place that looks like it's probably a bit tough for you, it is, the game will kill you and show no remorse. Lots of people prefer this of course, but either way it's worth being aware of before you buy.

Check out the Mog Mod for Morrowind, it's pretty awesome if you can still find it online. It's really well done and adds Moogle as a playable race. That's worth it on its own! (as I don't think he ever did a version for Oblivion)

I find issue with your comment on thieves (nothing to do with the fact that I only did well with a thief who worked with mysticism for quick travel purposes (certainly nothing to do with the fact that I broke into all 3 of the great houses vaults and so was set for the rest of the game)).

Morrowind was the first fantasy RPG i got really invested in and it remains my favorite to this day. 20 bucks is a little steep though. Search around and you'll find better prices.

If you haven't played it before don't play it now, it hasn't aged well.

What was ground breaking ten years ago, is clunky, ugly and interminably annoying now.

edit: although I would imagine that the mod that makes the graphics better would improve it a little.
