To those who have or want an electric guitar, what do you have, are you satisfied with it? Would you recommend it? About what should I expect to pay for one? Is there one you want? Why and about what will it cost?

I'm shopping around. I'm looking for something on the small and easy to hold side, like a Fender Strat, but as I web surf, I'm coming across brand names I've never even heard of and worry they might be cheap crap, which I'm avoiding.

I've seen Fender Strats for under $200 that look pretty good, but, I'm interested in anything else I should be looking at.

I'll worry about the over $1K stuff when I deserve one (can play really well) if ever, but I like hearing about them too.

I've got two electric guitars:

- Ibanez GSA 60 BK
- B.C. Rich Warlock Body Art Custom (Doc Murdock)

The former was my first, and I still love playing it. Back then I got it for around 620 DM, which would roughly equate to 360 dollars if I'm not mistaken. All the Ibanez guitars in this price category are great for beginners and intermediates, they look cool, and they have a great sound in both clear and distortion mode.

I have an American series Fender strat, and a Gibson Les Paul Classic.

I would recommend either, they're fantastic guitars. If you're looking to get something good on the cheap, I would recommend looking out for a 2nd hand Mex strat that was built in the 90's.(post millenium stuff up to about '08 was pretty shoddy)

They're seriously good.

Used to have a strat copy, currently have an Epiphone Les Paul, and am currently looking at an Orville Les Paul.

I do love my Les Pauls.

In terms of general electric guitars, my advice is to buy second hand. The first buyer will pay most of the depreciation, and then you can pick it up for a song. A MiM (made in Mexico) Strat is a pretty good bet, like SHP said.

Your amplifier also contributes a lot to your tone, but those amps that come in the packages are more than adequate for intents and purposes.

I've got a modified Squier Stratocaster (Named Larry after my 12th grade Calculus teacher) and a custom model based on the Steve McSwain Pythagoras that Jared Leto used for a while on stage (Named Gorgias from the writings of Plato). I've had Larry for seven years and he's undergone some pretty serious surgery but I find it more fun than straight up buying a new guitar. I like evolving my guitar with my musical styles/talents. Eventually I'll buy a new axe but not until I can justify the price.

I have a Gibson SG Voodoo. I love the guitar, but I can't say I recommend most modern Gibsons because they're generally overpriced and have pretty terrible build-quality. If you can get a Voodoo series one, then jump on it, because I'm pretty sure they don't make them anymore, and they are pretty damned awesome.

Not my one, but still sexy as hell.

I'll have to look at Craigslist: Looking at 90's guitars could be inexpensive, and your suggestion that they're actually better than the newer models is very interesting, thanks!

That Gibson is the prettiest I've seen, but is it heavy? I thought they were larger than average for some reason.

I've never put it to the scales but i would say maybe about two and a half kilos give or take a bit. Here's a link to the Gibson webpage [http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/SG/Gibson-USA/SG-Special.aspx] for a bit more info if you are interested.

I play an ESP LTD EX-360 (catchy name, right?), and it serves its function. It tends to dip due to the weird weight distribution of Explorer-style guitars, but for the price, it has a great sound for heavy rock/metal. I use heavy gauge strings on the lower strings to be able to downtune fairly low, and the guitar handles that beautifully.

A thought: it seems weird that you've found Fender Strats for under 200 dollars. Are you sure you don't mean Squier?

I own one, but I stopped playing around 4 months ago, because of personal issues and the lack of a band... I have a Frankenstein guitar... meaning that it has been broken so many times that it's hard to say what part is from where really... I have no idea how are the prices in the USA, because I'm in Bulgaria and here a standard 'beginer' guitar is around 350 leva, which is about 170 dolars roughly. I really would love to get my hands on a B.C. Rich Warlock Metal Master and a In Flames 2011 Bass, but thats just for the collection. ^^ Nice topic.

I'v got an epiphone les-paul copy. Looks like a les-paul, doesn't play like one but it satisfies me. Lightweight too, so if I ever was to play a gig It'd be relatively easy.

EDIT: pic

Price was £120, got lucky cause it was a christmas sale. My first was a Stagg, can't remember the model.

I can say, from 2 decades of guitar experience, that I've fallen in love with normal acoustics. My baby is a 1948 Gibson L-50 archtop that has just the most sweet sound in the world. I was actually looking for something like an ES-335 but I stumbled on Isabelle, and the price was right.

I figure my reasoning is that I'm something of a purist. I don't want an electric guitar that has to be run through effects to sound good, I want a guitar that sounds good before you change what it sounds like, which is why I'm a big fan of the Gibson ES series, and the Gretsch Electromatics.

That doesn't mean I don't have fun with my Gibby Les Paul, but 90% of the time I grab a guitar, it's Isabelle, my old, pure acoustic '48 Gibson.

EDIT: But don't get me wrong, I was just last week looking at '71 Gibson SGs with Bigsby tremelos, and would have pounced if the price was there. Notice, I do have a thing for Gibsons.
