I live in Ireland and, as most of you may know, our economy is, to put it lightly, in shit.

I'll be finishing my Masters this year and jobs in the area I want to work with are scarce. It's looking more and more likely that I'm going to have to go abroad to get work, rather than just signing on to welfare. That's right, invade your country and take all of your jobs.

At the moment Canada seems to be the most appealing but I haven't decided for sure yet. I wouldn't mind somewhere in Europe but Spanish is the only other modern language I have and Spain aren't in a much better position from what I gather.

So, if you had to emigrate for work or any other reason, where would you go and why?

P.S. If anyone wants to give me any helpful information about Canada, that would be awesome. I assume it's not all moose and hosers

Ironically I emigrated to Ireland to work.

But yeah, go where the work is, but find out as much as possible about what you will need to get sorted when you arrive before hand.

Go to Australia. People are really friendly over there.

Poor Hugh Jackman. I considered it but a lot of my friends have gone over and haven't had the best reception. Besides, me+lots of sun will not end well.

Well, my uncle emigrated to Canada to work. It turned out all right. No it's not all moose and horses but from what I gathered there are a few of them. And it's not much different than the rest of the world, maybe without the fact that it tends to be cold-ish but people get used to it. I'm talking about 8 degrees and some people are walking around with t-shirts maybe flip-flops. A Canadian Escapist will probably be able to confirm/deny that, as my information is old - I haven't talked with my uncle about the weather there for a long time - he has been in Canada for just over a dozen years now.

But all in all he's very happy about moving there. Has a good job in the IT industry, a house, a wife and kids (he got married just before emigrating) and isn't planning on leaving Canada. I'd say it a good bet to go there.

Oh my yes, Dubs is one of the friendliest places on the planet, made some very good friends there. Now I just have to undo the screw up of moving back to England for other work.

I emigrated to Canada a few years back, and it's quite nice here, so I'd recommend it. Although you'll need to get used to shovelling snow in the winter, 'cause it can be a *****.

Any specific stuff you need? Note that if you start asking me about politics or the economy or things like that, I haven't got a clue.

I live in Sweden, and I plan on leaving. No jobs here. Then again, there seems to be a lack of work for everyone, everywhere.

I live in America(California) and iv been trying to emigrate to Denmark for a few months but the paperwork is insane, damn European union and your not wanting to be tainted by American's(not that i can blame them really)

Well, the biggest argument against Canada I can think of is their terrible internet services. Now it really depends on how much time you spend on the interwebz....

Norway is still doing pretty well for itself, and less sun for all us indoorsy pale types.

Try mexico its all dirt cheap, just the constant risk of being kidnapped or killed.

If you are a engineer then come to Sweden. In my third year out of five and have six job offers already as a future engineer with a specialization in microelectronics.

Just places to steer clear of or any particularly nice places to go, mainly. I haven't researched it extensively.
