has anyone played it? if so, how much of a role does formations play? in real napoleonic warfare tactics like the "square" formation could save a infantry unit from cavalry (which would not charge a square) but get it destroyed by infantry fire.

Theoretically yes. But in practicality the AI is so bad that most attempts at historical tactics end in slaughter and the most effective thing you can do is place artillery on a hill and wait. That also goes for PvP.
