Now in these times seeing seven year olds playing "World at War." Also with more and more violence being in video games. Wether it's cartoon or just regular violence I thought now would be a good time to review a war movie. Now we all like a war movie. (Unless your a pacifist) If you like horror movies then you have no problem watching war movies.

Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan both give excellent views of the American campaign in Europe during World war II. But "Enemy at the Gates" it a total turn. It takes place in the battle of Stailingrad. Now I bet your thinking "Oh it's just a war movie taking place in communist Russia." Well "Enemy at the gates" defiantly goes to the top 5 war movies.

"Enemy at the gates" (like I said) takes place in the battle of Stailingrad. The prospective takes place through the legendary sniper Vasily Zaitsev. He has killed many Nazis during the war. His stories are amazing. This movie shows his story of an amazing and stressful duel against Vasliy and Nazi Germany's best sniper. There are many attempts from both snipers to take out each other. No matter what they do they can never seem to take one of them out.

Now let's talk scenery. OH MY GOD it's amazing. It's totally authentic. When I watched the behind the senses and it is outstanding on the lengths they took to make each set. They had to go to 18 countries and still nothing. They looked at rivers for the beginning scene and yet they had to resort to using a flooded cory mine. Also the bombed out buildings are amazing. You would think they actually bombed a building just to get the look. Over all scenery is outstanding. It goes over and above than what I've seen.

Now the kills. You can't have a war movie if you don't have any one getting shot and killed. Now I found a little problem with the way the kills worked. You see the guy fire. If it hits the guy you see the bullet go in. But here's were they disappointment comes in. You actually see the cut of the frame right before the guy drops dead. That disappointed me. Now it was either from laziness or time crunch. If someone gets shot in a war movie you should have fluent camera motion. But there are extreme moments of PWNAGE! In one scene you see Vasliy take a general and four guards down with only five bullets. They were also all head shots. Now I don't know if that is true. But hey it makes up for the cut frames. Once again the movie went beyond the rubric.

As you've probably seen in Band of Brothers or any other war movie you see a little romance. This movie also take some time to see Vasliy's Romantic side. In the movie Vasliy falls in love with kinda like a resistance fighter. She holds a real big grudge against the nazis. Just like Reznov from World at War. But any way they both fall in love. There is a moment in the movie were they have sex. Now I'm fine by the fact that that's in the movie. But seriously I don't need to see a five minutes of a scene of sex. It should of been two to three minutes. But the movie doesn't go long enough to see what the future held for them. Now I like the fact that they added another story to go with the drama and stress of Vasliy trying to kill the sniper. But it didn't go beyond. But still good.

So now like a video game you want to see accurate language talking. Now I'm fine by the fact that the Russians spoke english. But the Nazis also speck english. But it gets worse. You hear some side conversation of infantry just talking and it's in german. But then you see a general and the sniper talk and they talk english. WTF that is compete BS! Either have every german speck english or have them all speck german and have someone write in subtitles. The language in this movie is average. I don't give high markings for this one.

Well I think I gave enough about the movie. So here is my over all opinion. Now despite the kills and language it's an awesome movie. Pure pwnage, love, suspense, and thrills. I don't see any reason why no one would like this movie. If you don't like it them your obviously stupid any you have no taste. This is an amazing movie and I loved every minute of it.

my score 4.8/5 (AKA you must see it!!!)

*Also if there is anything I left out that I should consider putting in a different review please tell me thx ^_^ (but don't be an a** about it)

I agree that the movie is good but I believe that there have been far better. Anyway, I also agree with you about the sex scene being too long but I'd just as well not see it there at all, it just seems like it was forced in and was just inappropriate.

It's one of my favourite movies of all time. I'd give it 4.9/5.

I don't tend to focus on thing like whether everyone is speaking the same language though, it doesn't matter to me. Which is why my rating is 0.1 higher

I dunno. With all these war movies based on actual people, some of whom are still alive, I get kinda iffy when they purport to have some semblance historical origin that can be verified. The fact is this movie is a fiction set in WWII, and it's highly inaccurate, not just in portraying events pertaining to the main characters, but also about how the Russians ran their side of the Battle of Stalingrad. I like Saving Private Ryan because while it claimed to take some minor source material from history, it didn't have a "true story" to be compared to. Instead, it told a war story that rang true, but wasn't written true.

Oh, and love triangles always make things worse. I like Joseph Fiennes, but I could see his death coming from a mile away. They did the same thing in Pearl Harbor for pete's sake.

Most of those crazy goddamn stories about Vasille are true though.

http://www.badassoftheweek.com/zaitsev.html

Upon his arrival in Stalingrad, Zaitsev grabbed his standard-issue Mosin-Nagant rifle and went to work as part of the Soviet 1047th Rifle Regiment. He made a name for himself pretty quickly, killing forty German soldiers over the course of ten days. Eventually he got his hands on a badass sniper rifle and started headshotting motherf*ckers all over the place like an insane long-range version of "Whack-a-Mole", wreaking so much havoc that the Germans actually dispatched their most badass sniper out from Berlin to take Zaitsev down. Vasily responded by instant-messaging a chunk of hot lead into the guy's frontal lobe and stealing his telescopic sight as a trophy.

holy crap! I'm surprised no one criticized me. It's been 12 hours (I went to bed after I wrote this) since I wrote this. Usually there is alway someone that criticizes me. That's good. I guess I better make my reviews more and more like this. I already have to put up with my friend's criticism. *sigh* he could never appreciate any thing and he always thinks he's right.

Oh I also forgot to add one thing to the review. I'm not going to add it but I forgot to add acting. Oh well I'll remember next time ^_^

I lol'd.

Well, first time I saw this I thought it was OK, but a little clusmy in it's actual storytelling. I've recently gone back to it with my (now) superior brain, and I'm starting to think they did that on purpose to show the relationships between soliders...

Anyway, it's an amazing film.

I liked the movie and thought is was pretty good, on the side of your review.. I felt that there was some repetition and a few sentences were awkwardly phrased, apart from that, good movie and review.
