Enemy Territory Quake Wars

The sad reality is that lots of people have heard of the hugely popular gaming series Call of Duty yet have never heard of Enemy Territory Quake Wars (ETQW for short) It therefore really grinds my gears when the title of best game ever gets thrown around so easily without ETQW even being considered.

I therefore thought it would be a good idea to make more people aware of this awsome game.
ETQW first came out in 2007 and was designed by the developers at Splash Damage. However rather unfortunately the game was published by Activision who at the time were also focused on releasing Call Of Duty 4 Modern Warfare. You don't get any prizes or cookies for guessing which game they favoured.

At its core ETQW is a team based objective orientated FPS set in the Quake Universe. There are two races the Strogg (Aliens) and GDF (Human defenders) who both take it in turns to attack and defend (depending on the map).

Each team has its own weapons and vehicles (land,sea and air) as well as their own deployables. While there are differences in the Weapons and vehicles the deployables are pretty much the same. Lastly there are the 5 different classes. Soldier/Medic/Engineer/Field ops/Covert ops. Both teams have similar classes with similar jobs but they both have different tools so you have to use different strategies depending on the team, yes ETQW is a hardcore game.

Here is a frag movie by one of the best comp teams in the world Mamut.si It may seem like the guy is not killing fast because it looks like about the same time to kill someone say as COD, thats because he is one of the best players and can shoot well, I can gurantee you when you start it takes alot longer to kill someone. This is because the game rewards skill, headshots kill alot faster than body shots. Thought it would be cool to it include anyway so you can see what the shooting is like at comp level

I've heard of it, but the respawn times are dasturdly evil.other than that, it's fairly fun.

Heeeey, I used to have this game!
Many a happy hour I whiled away as the GDF.
I wish there was a split-screen co-op mode, online is fun, but there's nothing that compares to knifing your friends in the back then taunting them in real life. Miles better than just Teabagging.

I had alot of fun with quake wars, altho once it became apparent the clan I was with wasnt really doing anything I kinda stopped playing since I got so used to playing with an organized team, it was just kinda painful to play with a pug

I was very very excited for this game while it was in development. When I got a hold of a copy i was very very disappointed and returned it. The game sounded awesome made me think of Tribes but sadly it just never clicked with me. I love Quake and Id too... but they could have done a better job on this.

Its interesting you mention tribes, there is a tribe mod, not sure what its progress is at the moment last I heard it was late in Beta, I don't play much anymore because of time and real life commitements, you should check it out though.
