Ok so the Escapist posted an article about Gabe Newall saying that Linux is the future of gaming or something along those lines. Anyway I don't have a problem with the article. I only wished he would clarify gaming as a whole or PC gaming because I am not tech savvy enough nor do I think I ever will be to get Linux to work properly and I intend to be a game designer. Anyway back on track. Its no secret that there is a divide between PC gamers and console gamers. PC gamers view console gamers as these savages who are lesser gamers to them because they don't embrace the idea of custom built hardware and modding games to their hearts content while console gamers view PC people as overly pretentious and just plane snobby.

Now I know that is not the case generally. Those are just the stereotypes that are perpetuated by the internet. Generally both are fairly agreeable and hell quite a view PC gamers own at least one console while console gamers probably have 1 or 2 games they play exclusively on the PC such as League of Legends. Either way I'm here to say this. Stop it. Just stop it. Stop with the name calling, stop with the perpetuating of negative stereotypes, and stop being an all around dick to a group of people because they don't game the way you do. Even jokingly. Console gamers from what I have seen just tend to be rude so you guys that are being rude knock it off. You do no one any favors by doing so. PC gamers if nothing else STOP WITH THE PC MASTER RACE JOKE! I know its a joke but sometimes its hard to tell when one is joking or serious and either way it makes you look like snobby rich guy who looks down on others because they don't have his wealth or are a part of his social strata. That joke has been played out to death and I just can't stand it anymore. That goes for you too console gamers. If you have some kind of master race joke like they do that I've never heard about STOP IT!

No form of gaming is superior to another. Each has disadvantages and advantages. For example consoles are all ready to go out of the box. Just plop a disc in and the most you do is wait for the trophies or achievement data to install. PC's have to jump through codes to install and make sure that their computer is up to snuff to run the game. PCs on the other hand can upgrade their hardware anytime they want while console buyers can't and are forced to wait for new models.

So in conclusion for the love of God and all that is decent in gaming can we just stop with this sniping at each other. It won't help any of us in the long run. Ever. In the history of the world.

Well, let me try and put your mind at ease a little:

The article in question talks a lot about Valve making a console of their own. I really don't think it was Gabe trying to lord it over console owners. Especially if he's about to try and sell one.

Furthermore, Newell's main problem isn't with consoles, it's with Windows 8. So he isn't criticising consoles as much as he is criticising the most popular PC OS (Windows, that is, not Windows 8).

But yes, I would agree with the rest of your post. PCs are objectively better in terms of specs. PC gaming itself isn't for everyone, and can hardly be called better. If you prefer it, it's better for you. If you don't, it isn't.

But yeah, the fracture within the community is dumb. Is there a divide between people who read books on a Kindle and those who don't? I doubt it. I don't think it's quite as bad as you make out, though, but maybe I haven't noticed.

i really wouldn't be concerned about this, as wombat said, this is just killing time until the next publicity stunt. just ignore it, i'm fairly sure the writer worded it in such a way as to anger at least a few people.

You should really take what Gabe Newell says with a grain of salt. I could definitely see Linux being in the future of gaming for smaller companies. Google the Open Pandora, or GCW Zero. They are Linux based open source handhelds. Well, Pandora is closer to a miniature PC, but still cool.

I should've just left the article out. It just triggered something in my brain. The point of this was not to attack Gabe. Hell he is considered the grandfather of PC gaming or something. Pretty much what Shigeru Miyamoto is for consoles that what he is for the PC. My point I was trying to make, because I read some of the comments on such things, was to just have the whole PC vs. console crap stop outright. No more making fun of either side or doing any of the lording business. So yeah it was a misstep on my part but yeah I have nothing against Gabe.

I started out just joking about one platform being better, but then when I read other people say that I can't tell if they're joking or not. Who would be so stupid to actually think they know what's best for everyone?

its honestly like a couple of guys having a pissing match. both platforms are better at certain genres and even then it comes down to player preference with a few of them. that said certain genres just wont be seen on a console and even if you somehow pulled it off they wouldnt make money
The exact same thing can be said for PCs as well. Japanese rarely make PC games so if you like their games a console is better. I can't think of a single genre that isn't on a console besides text adventure. There are RTSes, MMOs are coming, even point and click adventures got ports. I'm not going to argue the quality of them because that's like arguing the quality of PC JRPGs. Like you said it's all about preferences.
