The Worst Review You've Ever Seen; The Logician Reviews The Prophet's Song

Have you ever heared of The Prophet's Song? Not a lot of people have. I've introduced a couple people on The Escapist to it; reaction has been universally positive, so I thought I'd introduce you all to The Dragon's Dream. And be gentle; this is my first time writing a review.

A brief note: when I (and so far as I know, anyone else) refer to The Prophet's Song, I refer to the main world, Stax. As such this is the server I'll be reviewing.

You start off in Stax by creating a character. This character can be one of seven races [http://www.trollscantsing.eu/hydre/guide/races.php], each with two subdivisions; The Light races Humans [http://www.trollscantsing.eu/hydre/guide/racedesc.php?race=0], Elves [http://www.trollscantsing.eu/hydre/guide/racedesc.php?race=1], Dwarves [http://www.trollscantsing.eu/hydre/guide/racedesc.php?race=2], Halflings [http://www.trollscantsing.eu/hydre/guide/racedesc.php?race=6], Trolls [http://www.trollscantsing.eu/hydre/guide/racedesc.php?race=3] and Imps [http://www.trollscantsing.eu/hydre/guide/racedesc.php?race=7], and the Dark races, Dark Elves [http://www.trollscantsing.eu/hydre/guide/racedesc.php?race=8], Orcs [http://www.trollscantsing.eu/hydre/guide/racedesc.php?race=4], Goblins [http://www.trollscantsing.eu/hydre/guide/racedesc.php?race=5], and Ogres [http://www.trollscantsing.eu/hydre/guide/racedesc.php?race=13]. Each has their own general skills, weapons skills, and stat bonuses they start out with; that being said, I'm not sure what all of them are. I wasn't aware at the time that I would be writing a review of the game, so I didn't bother toying around with the different races.

Stax is a text-based game. This means that everything is text, except for the map. Everything. Even your char on the map is represented by the first two letters of his/her name. Combat plays out as, "You hit one Wolf and deal Twenty Damage, killing one Wolf; one fur, one raw meat drops to the ground." I like this because it lets me imagine myself how the fight went. Which is somethng I like doing.

Of course, like any RPG, there are skills that you have to learn, which means grinding. Luckily for you grind-freaks out there, there are twenty-six skills [http://www.trollscantsing.eu/hydre/guide/skill-main.php] in Stax, which can again be divided into two categories;
Masonry [http://www.trollscantsing.eu/hydre/guide/skill-list.php?cat=1],
Mining [http://www.trollscantsing.eu/hydre/guide/skill-list.php?cat=2],
Blacksmith [http://www.trollscantsing.eu/hydre/guide/skill-list.php?cat=3],
Tailoring [http://www.trollscantsing.eu/hydre/guide/skill-list.php?cat=4],
Woodworking [http://www.trollscantsing.eu/hydre/guide/skill-list.php?cat=5],
Stoneworking [http://www.trollscantsing.eu/hydre/guide/skill-list.php?cat=6],
Leadership [http://www.trollscantsing.eu/hydre/guide/skill-list.php?cat=7],
Fleeing [http://www.trollscantsing.eu/hydre/guide/skill-list.php?cat=8],
Seeking [http://www.trollscantsing.eu/hydre/guide/skill-list.php?cat=9],
Alchemy [http://www.trollscantsing.eu/hydre/guide/skill-list.php?cat=10],
Ruinic [http://www.trollscantsing.eu/hydre/guide/skill-list.php?cat=11],
Sorcery [http://www.trollscantsing.eu/hydre/guide/skill-list.php?cat=12]

and Weapons Skills [http://www.trollscantsing.eu/hydre/guide/skill-wlist.php],
Short Sword
Long Sword,
Two-Handed Sword,
Polearm,
Blowpipe,
Axe,
Two-Handed Axe,
Bow,
Crossbow,
Hammer,
Two-Handed Hammer,
Articulated Weapon,
Spear,
and Unarmed.

Each has a particular use and growth chart, meaning your skills go up differently with each one; along with that, each is used for a specific purpose. This is interesting because you can't just grind yourself into the ground for a few weeks and make a Ring of the Warrior [http://www.trollscantsing.eu/hydre/guide/items-armors.php?obj=109]. The weapon skill system is odd, too; I can't say this for certain, but I'm reasonably sure your weapon skill dictates how much damage you do more than your strength.

Skills take a long time to polish in Stax. I was told once that if you use all your turns without a master, it will generally take you a year to get up to level 500. I've been playing since mid-october myself, and my highest skill is only 300, although I've got two other skills at above or around 200 (Blacksmith and Alchemy), and my highest skill is a weapon skill; your weapon skills go down as you die; you can lose up to seven points. General skills don't go down, but they usually take a lot longer to train, and don't always yield as much results.

The enviornments are varied enough in stax to keep it interesting; you've got roads, plains, forests, mountains, wastelands, swamps, and lava. Yes, lava. What's more, you've got roads going through forests and mountains, mountains surrounded by lava and wastes, and cities surrounded by swamps. While there are monsters you see in more than one place (wolves, mostly; they're everywhere) most monsters are terrain-specific. I haven't met a bear anywhere except a mountain, I haven't seen a minotar anywhere but a forest, I haven't seen zombies and skeletons anywhere but the wastelands.

A lot of what I like about Stax is the people; there aren't a lot of them, and a few of them don't talk, but most of them are really cool. If you die, for example, someone will usually get your things for you, if you bother to ask. The town leaders usually greet you when you first arrive; these aren't NPCs, either, these are actual people in the game. Of course, this only applies if you're one of the same race groups (light or dark). If you're a dark, most lights in a group will kill you, and vice versa. I've heared people complain that you can't get along in the game without joining a group, and you can't join a group unless you do everything they say; however, that hasn't happened to me.

Stax has the usual issues of a text-based RPG; it's a little slow, it takes a long time to do anything, and visually, everything's practically the same. There are also problems with the weapons, in as much as everything except bows and short swords are harder than hell to find. It also has a steep learning curve, and the only explination you get concerning your stats is halfway through the tutorial quest. Also, in an attempt to bring down the sheer amount of spam, you have to wait for an admin to validate your e-mail, but that doesn't take more than a couple of days.

So that's The Dragon' s Dream. Interested? If you are, the link is here [http://www.trollscantsing.eu/]. Tell me what you think after a while.
