You do realize that a PC does more than play games right?

Ironically, your PC has an even shorter lifespan than a console, because you have to keep buying shit for it.
Not completely accurate. It's been 3 years since my last upgrade and it was 5 years before that. My last upgrade was because my PC was far below the current generation, and my next upgrade will be when the same thing happens to the next generation.

If you build your PC properly, it is perfectly feasible to get a good 3-6 years between upgrades, depending on how much you're able to spend and how up to date you want to be.
And you'll get six, seven, or even eight years out of your console. This generations started in 2006, won't end until 2013-2014.
There's another side to that, and Waaghpowa actually said it.

A console is, at its core, a very limited PC. For your $300-400, you're getting a system designed specifically for playing games and media, along with some basic internet utilization. A PC, conversely, is capable of doing an incredible variety of different tasks. Sure, my gaming PC cost more than my PS3 did, but I can't use Photoshop or 3dsmax on my PS3. I also can't mod my games on a console. Beyond that, PC-centric games like Crysis simply couldn't be done as well on a console as it could on a high-end PC.

Right... Consoles to "catch up". What, so mainstream developers won't even have to bother with poor ports? Please don't take away the few games I have left! :(

That's very flashy and all but utilizing all that power will just mean mulitiplying the already staggering cost of AAA development.

The power isn't worth much these days because Gameplay > Graphics. Really, why pour a fortune into super fancy AAA production? Look at some of the most powerful competition out there... Minecraft? Angry Birds? Whateverville? World of Warcraft? WoW's the fanciest but no one's gonna accuse it of being a graphical powerhouse, never mind that its getting pretty long in the fang.

Games don't need better graphics (which would still be shiny, but secondary), they need better game design.
What a lot of people seem to be forgetting is that the graphics aren't the only thing that needs improving. More CPU power and RAM will allow for more complex AI, puzzles and gameplay mechanics. In addition to this, it will aid smaller developers because they're allowed to be.. for lack of a better term, lazier. The more power there is in your system, the less optimisation there needs to be in your code, so the less work you need to do, making it easier to make games.

Oh shut up EPIC you have been ignoring the PC for nearly a decade now! Hell with today's rush to make limited boxed games for the zombie infested masses a PC is to complex both control and hardware wise for the target demo they are aiming their games at!

ANd same to you Ubi, oh right ya sure "consoles" are limiting your current "creativity" bah more like the only thing limiting your creativity is how many cheap game clones you can march out the door.....uhg you all make me sick!

Here's a thought Epic. If there is already a platform out there with the hardware you want why not use it to make some compelling games. Some games so compelling that console owners will be clamouring for next gen consoles to be capable of playing it.

And I am not talking about just graphics, but new game play mechanics that need more processing power to deliver, like advanced physics or more life like enemy AI.

That's the way you convince everyone that certain things are needed in next gen consoles, one tech demo after years of neglect are just not going to cut it to make your case.

What? Create product demand through the release of actual quality products? THAT'S CRAZYTALK.

The thing I love about consoles is that they aren't labour intensive. They don't require you to think "crap, is my xbox going to be able to run this game" because the specs are the same for every xbox/ps3.

Everyone who is crying out about gaming slowly dying are just trying to stir trouble. Gaming isn't dying. Consoles aren't killing it. Jeez,
