Ok, so this is sort of a random "I think this show episode was totally awesome, and I'm going to gush about why" kind of thread. It can be a show that you don't really like, except for that one episode. It can be a show that is usually a comedy, but did a really awesome drama, or vice versa. Or it can be a show that you think is consistently awesome, but this one episode surpassed all the others.

For me, this is with Samurai Jack. Season 1, Episode 10 - Jack vs The Lava Monster

The beginning of the episode is slow, but that's sort of by design, it has a slow increase of tension, while Jack wanders a desolated land. Once he gets to the dangerous, trap filled area, things quickly pick up, and quite literally become non-stop. While the traps themselves don't really hold much tension for me, the fact that each trap simply leads into another one, without any true pause is quite enjoyable, and helps to hammer home that Jack is in peril. But the true moment that this episode shines, is once he meets the lava monster.

The reveal is appropriately dramatic, and awesome, the massive creature, looming over Jack, while ominous music plays in the background. They toss blows back and forth, and Jack gets a decent strike in, and the monster....does something quite odd. Instead of becoming furious at the injury, he cries out in joy "At laaaaast! A worthy opponent!" This makes Jack raise an eyebrow, and makes the audience mentally go "wtf?' too. Then, the monster becomes furious when Jack refuses to fight him, and refuses to strike him defenseless. Then he goes into his backstory, with a beautiful style to depict the events. Showing a stick figure animation of his life before he was cursed....a life that was painfully similar to Jack's, right down to Aku showing up and destroying it. It's revealed that he is in fact, not a monster at all, but a viking that was cursed by Aku to that rock form. He was then trapped for at least a thousand years, if not longer, imprisoned in a mountain of stone. And since he's a viking, the only way he can reach his afterlife, is dying in combat. So now, Jack has to kill this man to free him, as life is now his prison.

Now, this is where the episode personally goes into the realms of Fucking Awesome.

The monster, basically begs Jack to fight him, so he can join his people in the afterlife, and Jack, quietly unsheathes his sword, and simply says "Prepare yourself" The level of relief in the monster's voice as he says "At last, the gates of Valhalla open to meee!" Gives me chills every time. There was so much emotion delivered by the voice actor, the wonderful Richard McGonagle, in every line he uttered. They get into a very dramatic fight, but the obvious happens, Jack wins. Once he lands the fatal strike, instead of dying, it breaks the curse, and then the viking reverts to his human form, letting out this triumphant, defiant shout against Aku, having finally outsmarted him. The display is so stunning, that even Jack is dumbfounded, and has a bit of an "oh shit" look on his face, as this giant norse warrior is unveiled. Every time I see this part, I get teary eyed. The level of emotional victory in this scene just floors me. Thousands of years of imprisonment and loss, the madness of being trapped in a body not of your own, alone, and struck with the knowledge that the only way your torture can end....is to die. But you can't kill yourself, if you could even pull it off in this new form, no, you have to die at the hands of someone else. Someone strong enough to actually defeat you in fair combat. And you are so strong, so powerful, so many haven't been up to the task. And then finally, this lone warrior shows up, and gives you the one thing you've wanted more than anything. Release, an ending to it all.

And then, as he revels in the restoration of his body, the curse is lifted, and he rapidly ages. This was the one thing that annoyed me about the episode, but I suspect it's to satisfy the likely rule about "you will not show human on human killing in this kid's show", by having the viking die of rapid aging, instead of a sword wound to the stomach. But thinking on the situation, this can't be what actually happened. Dying from old age isn't "dying in combat", which wouldn't get him into Valhalla. So he had to have actually been killed by the sword strike for it to work. Which means, that in this episode, Jack actually killed something other than robots.

Then, as he stands over the fallen warrior, saddened by what he had to do, the sky erupts in shafts of light, and the valkyrie's swoop down on their mounts to reclaim him, the last son of the Norse, who kept faith with them all these ages. The music, the muted sounds of their descent from the heavens, and Jack's reaction, all make for a really emotionally striking conclusion. They scoop him up, and fly off back to the afterlife, so he can finally join his loved ones, so long dead. Jack then carves an image of him on the obelisk of his story, happy, and writes free underneath it. He smiles and then leaves, now walking through an area returning to life, now that the blight of Aku's curse has been lifted. We end with the shot of the viking, standing in the clouds, with the classic Norse pantheon of gods around him.

This episode, man, I just....I love this episode so much. I've been watching it every few months for, shit, 14 years now? And every time, it chokes me up. Hell I got a little teary eyed doing this writeup, remembering some of the scenes. I love this episode because the protagonist, and hero of the episode, actually isn't Jack. It's the Warrior. Jack is just the instrument that facilitates his personal victory over Aku, a victory that was long in the making. I attribute much of my love of this to Richard McGonagle's performance. A stable actor on the television circuit, you've probably seen him in a couple dozen things, usually as a military guy. He brings so much genuine emotion and feeling to the performance, that it always blows me away. He wasn't phoning this shit in, he gave it his all, and it shows. And to this day, it's still my favorite episode of that show, hands down. In fact, I plan on watching it again today when I get home from work.

So, that long thing out of the way. What episode of a show do you love like this? And why?

Digital Estate Planning, Season 3 of Community. This has been my favorite show since its inception 5 seasons ago. I was there for the beginning, I was there for the gas leak year, and I will be there for the Age of Yahoo.

Anyway, this episode takes place in a game developed by Pierce's dad's money, and Pierce and his 6 friends (LeVar Burton was a maybe) have to play in order to receive the fullness of his bequeathment. The art, the story, the humor is just all so spot on. I love it.

The first episode in both seasons of Code Geass. Granted the second season's opening was a point for point copy of the first one but with different characters and locations but the plot and structure of the episode events is exactly the same.

It's one of those first episodes where it tells you exactly what the show is going to be about and it's going to be fuckin' awesome.

Oh and Episode 3 of No Game No Life. I was expecting good things from the series but hell that blew me away... The most hype game of Chess ever played.

Two Breaking Bad episodes come to mind as being extremely well-done to me. To be honest every episode is great but two of them gave me shivers. (Mild spoilers ahead)

"Crawl Space" is the first one, near the end of season 4. The episode is all about tension and release, and the final sequence with Walt in the crawl space was terrifying. As the episode ended I needed a few minutes to recover, it was just so intense.

"Ozymandias" is the other episode which many others consider to be the best episode of Breaking Bad. It's basically the episode where everything falls apart. It's like a macrocosm of "Crawl Space", this time the tension built up through the entire series finally releases, causing a huge emotional crash. You could say it's the climax of the series, the next two episodes being the denouement.

Walkabout (Season 1 Episode 4) of Lost of course. A rather normal episode with an amazing ending that completely changes the normal events into something fantastic.
Lost has had so many ups and downs but that episode in particular was amazingly done. A fantastic use of Lost's flashback format.

The latest episode of Gravity Falls was a real game-changer.

Not only do we find out that Grunkle Stan might not be who he says he is (or perhaps there's more to it than that?), but the Author of the journals is revealed... to be his twin brother. Aaaand a chorus of "I knew it" echoes across the internet. Also, Dipper and Mabel's relationship is considerably strained after all this, though how strained is yet to be seen.

...However, now we have to wait until summer to find out what happens next... Fuckin' Disney...

The Episode "Duet" in the first season on Deep Space 9 just makes me speechless. DS9's first season was by far its weakest, but this one show near the end of the season is unbelievable. It's such a simple plot that packs an enormous emotional punch, and the performances of the two lead actors of the episode are spellbinding. There are at least two scenes that always make me cry a little. This is the kind of story that any actor or director would feel lucky to be given the chance to be a part of.

"Crackers Don't Matter" from Farscape is amazing. Again, it's from an overall great show, but it came at a time before it had hit its stride. Season one had a few clunkers and season two really upped the game with this episode. It is just the perfect example of simultaneous humor and suspense. It's so bizarre and hilarious seeing everyone go just up-the-wall insane. The atmosphere and dialogue of the show is fantastic, and it just really left an impression.

Oh hells yes. This episode was amazing. So much tension and emotional impact, conveyed beautifully by the two actors in the scene.

Samurai Champloo has a few episodes that fit the category.

One is where Mugen gets betrayed by his childhood friend and her boyfriend. Spoilers, btw. Good part starts at about 1:10.

And the second episode is where Jin helps that one lady who's forced into prostitution. It has a fantastic intro, too.

Finally someone on here who has seen that episode!!!
Funny thing is that someone actually made a conspiracy video on it A YEAR before that episode was aired! For once it was right!!!

Wait? Next summer as in 2016???? It's in mid season 2 dammit!

OT- Speaking of Gravity Falls, I really loved the last episode before that one "Northwest Mansion Mystery" mainly cos of the huge character development for Pacifica.
When the episode started, we immediately see that Pacifica was somewhat a victim of abuse per say since she is order against her will when it come to the bell. After that, sure she start of being reluctant for wanting Dipper help and I find it strange that she help dresses him and as the episode went out, she started to treat him friendly (hugged despite how improper coming from her and she wanted him to stay despite he is not rich enough to be there) than the usual him being beneath her. This is genuine when the truth is reveal and she felt guilty for lying to him and she pretty much kind of broke down learning about her family secret. Through some encouragement and assurance from Dipper she define her parent and did something good that noone in her family would have ever done!!

What is it with the cartoon characters these days since they used to be the sterotypical badguy/ bully but now they can make a U turn with their character development for the better (Ice King and Sunset Shimmer come to my mind).

Not only does it add more development them as a character but it break broadary from the sterotypical character archtype when you see and associate with to a relatable and real characters! (Ice King is kinda like the new Mr Freeze, Sunset became really remorsal and wanting to redeem herself so much).

Funny thing is that I don't think the creator intended to flesh her out that way since the creator intended her to be the ***** character that you hate since she is the polar oppersite of Mabel who we loved but she still somehow became popular (it wsa mention in this Q and A).

Other than that episode, there always that Ghost in the Shell Episode: "IN: Kusanagi's Labyrinth ? AFFECTION". Learing of the Major origin was like a fairy tale and my god, Yoko Kano track in that episode!

I have two; both from the same series.

Jail Break/Full Disclosure from Steven Universe. Jailbreak because we get a little more insight in Gem relationships (apparently Gem Fusion is not only a battle tactic, but the equivalent of being in a serious relationship/married) and because Garnet shows off her vocal talent and battle prowess (seriously, she throws down like a BOSS!)

Full Disclosure shows Steven coming to understand what far reaching effects being a Crystal Gem has. When it was just [Go here > Do thing > Save day] he was psyched, full of the kind of joy that only a wide-eyed child can have. Now he has people that want to take him from his home and loved ones, not because of anything he's done, but because he simply exists. To draw danger to not only yourself, but to where you live and everyone you care about is a frightening revelation for a child to understand.

The final episode of Death Note. It was actually the first episode of the show I saw when I was younger, so when I actually watched it from beginning to end a few years later, I knew what was going to happen. But seeing it in context blew me away.

The showdown between Light and Near finally happens in an abandoned warehouse. Light's eagerness to kill Near is exploited and the tables are turned on him, and it's revealed that Light is Kira. Matsuda, who's always felt useless in the Kira investigation is devastated. He looked up to L, who was killed, and Light, who turned out to be Kira. Infuriated, he draws his gun and shoots Light, who then collapses and calls out the names of all the people he's exploited and tossed aside. Light's accomplice, Mikami, devastated by seeing the person he considered a God denounce him, stabs himself in the chest, allowing Light to slip away. As he's running away, he thinks about the day he picked up the notebook and set all of this in motion. Ryuk writes Light's name in his notebook, and Light dies halfway up a stairwell (symbolizing that he can't go to Heaven or Hell) and see's L, his only real friend before dying.

That description doesn't really do it justice, but it's very powerful.

High five fellow Gravity Falls fan! Seriously, that was an awesome episode, but the wait is KILLING me!

I think new episodes are set to air this summer, but that's three months away! They have no excuse!

Anyway, I agree with your assessment of "Northwest Manor Mystery", it's always nice when a stuck-up or annoying character gets some development.

Still wish certain characters would get some of that.... *COUGH*DiamondTiara*COUGH*

Steven Universe, double yes!
Last week was a great week for those two shows! Real game changer episodes for each of them! I'm so happy someone mentioned them already. Especially Steven Universe a show that I think needs all the love for how different it is and how well written it can be. I actually thought the Steven Universe episodes were even more epic than the big plot reveal for Gravity Falls too which is something I never thought I'd say. I cried like, three times during those Steven Universe episodes. I'm not a wienie...okay maybe I am.

Other than those two shows? Well, as far as cartoons go I thought the Episodes "Holly Jolly Secrets and I Remember You" from Adventure Time were pretty gosh darn big. It arguably started the whole drama parts and world building that show is now known for.

Then we have this part of Adventure Time

Note how both of these involve music.

Hmmm... Well, the latest Steven Universe and Gravity Falls episodes have already been mentioned... and one of my favorite songs from Season 2 of Adventure Time was also already mentioned... So, I'll just go with the Ed, Edd, n' Eddy episode "If It Smells Like an Ed" for revealing one character's "true colors", if you will...

Other than that, the episode "Simon and Marcy" from Adventure Time and the episode "Alone Together" from Steven Universe... The formal for hitting me in the feels with nostalgia and the latter because of the experience...

Great show. My favorite episode has always been the one where they decide to go around "figuring out how things work" (forget the episode title) and end up wandering through a surreal dreamscape of insanity. Soooo many good lines.

"Eddy, why does goo float?"
"Carrots are good for your eyes, but can they dial a phone?"
"I can hear dorks, but I can't see dorks!"
"A three-headed Ralph...yawn."

OT: I'll go with episode 51 of Rurouni Kenshin. It's the 2nd part of Kenshin and Aoshi's rematch fight...the first fight in which Kenshin uses his ultimate technique: the Amakakeru Ryu no Hirameki.

The moment when he unleashes it on Aoshi...the look on Aoshi's face is absolutely priceless. Eyes and mouth wide open as he sails the the air, you just know he's thinking "DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN! I know I was the one who got hit with it, but that was fucking awesome!"

At least that's what I always imagined was going through his head. :3

Runner up:

The 3rd episode of Kenshin's fight with Soujiro...where he absolutely destroys the poor lad's psyche by simply suggesting that if he truly regrets the life he's lived so far, why not just start over? Cue one of the most epic mental breakdowns in anime history.

A lot of people are talking about Gravity Falls and Steven Universe, and they're all talking about episodes that I loved as well. I actually came here both times after the mid-season finale of GF, and again with SU's half-hour special (anyone else remember when a half hour special wasn't a big deal, because getting two new episodes of a 15 minute show was the norm?) looking for threads to talk about them, but I saw none. My mistake. Next time I'll make my own.

Anyway, I think the episode that's really hit me in Steven Universe isn't Jailbreak, but Rose's Scabbard. Watching Pearl break like that, showing that much vulnerability, and then Steven helping her in the only way he knows how was really touching. It was such a simple thing for him to do, and yet it was so powerful. The look on her face and the tears...

And then, without any dialogue, showing Pearl and Steven bonding while she described her battles with Rose was a nice character building moment for them both. You could tell that they were both valuing something completely different, but bonding over it. Steven was in rapture because he was not only getting to listen to his friend and see her happy, but he was getting to hear about his mom. Pearl meanwhile wasn't relating the story in order for Steven to get to know his mom, but because she wanted to relive those days with Rose, and talk about the Gem she idolized and followed, and loved having someone there willing to listen to every word. That is a masterful piece of storytelling right there, and it's done without a single word.

Supernatural, I think the episodes name is "French Mistake".
Basically they get transported into our universe... and hilariousness ensues :p
Almost all "comedy episodes" are very good in that series, about 1 per season, 2 if we're lucky and they need fillers xD
