I've recently gotten into MMOs and spend quite a bit of time downloading free trials and trying a bit of this and that. I did play WOW for several months (and I had a good time) However all the people I played with at work quit so i took a break and tried EQ2.

Something about the vice over quests and vast selection of races really drew me in. However I'm also charmed by the story and artwork of WOW.

I don't really have an addictive personalty so story and ascetics matter more to me than 'epix lewwtz' so what I want to ask is this...

Veterans and experts of both games....what are the best reasons for me choosing either one? What are the advantages and disadvantages of sticking with one or the other?

Thank you all.

Edit: I hope that my grammar and spelling are acceptable. I know also this post seems more of a personal question but I do believe that there are others like me who would like to play an MMO, but are stuck with tough choice due to our lack of getting addicted to leveling and loot.

You played both games, so why are you asking strangers? You said you're not in it for the loot/endgame, so it doesn't really matter to you what the game is like when you've maxed out your avatar and all you do is raid. Go for the game that you enjoy playing the most.

Of the two, I definitely prefer WoW. However, if End Game content is not your thing, I'd go with the aforementioned EVE of Pirates of the Burning Sea, as they both offer great PVP and content that isn't all end game.

<.< Having tried both WoW, EQ2 and Warhammer (EVE never interested me) I would have to say give WoW a go. You said you had a good time with what you played of it so that's a good thing.

The main reason I'm advocating WoW is because I think WotLK is a great piece of work. If you had asked me two months ago I would have been less inclined to suggest this because BC was really not that fun, especially towards the end. With WoW nerfing the amount of xp it takes to level from 1-70 it won't take you long to get to 55 (and therefore Death Knight) and just a hop skip and a jump to Northrend from there.

That said an MMO is really only as good as the company you keep in game. If you can find a good group of people to play with in EQ2 and not in WoW then go with that. It also could depend on what you are looking for. I am a huge fan of Warhammer (both Fantasy and 40K) but pvp in MMO's tends to piss me off. I got really tired with the static nature of the classes in Warhammer Online and got tired of getting killed by Lord Roxxorz" and having him desecrating my corpse. Not saying Warhammer's a bad game, just not for me. It might be what you're looking for.

Go for WoW - it soon becomes an addiction. I've magically...managed to stay away from it, even after playing a trial for my ex.

Having played EQ EQ2 WoW Warhammer and Eve, I have to say it, dispite how much I hate it, that WoW is the best game.

EQ was great, but its just old now.

EQ2 is an amazing game but the grahpical lag even with a supercomputer hurts it.

Warhammer was great for about 2 months, was thrid to 40 on my server, and then I relized I had had done ever instance in the game and that the epic battles are about as epic as the Clone Wars movie, and get very repitive over time. Mythic may fix this in the furture, but as of right now Warhammer is just not worth playing unless you find doing endless Senario's to be extreamly fun. The PvE is really not there, though I guess people who are all about PvP don't mind that. It was just a bit to one sided for me to lose myself in.

Eve was probly the most fun I ever had in a MMO, I had two accounts and made a miner/hauler combo and was very rich very fast. I joined a good Corp and soon found myself spending hours on hours hitting one key and not understanding why I though it was fun, but it was. Eve is a great game if you like people, talking to people, working with people, fighting people. Its all about a socal interaction, more then it is about fighting. You will meet some very intresting people in Eve, and its a least worth playing the tiral off to see if you like it.

Wow is well WoW, its easy to pick up, easy to play and easy to lose your entire life to. Only downside to WoW is that at times it feels like its to easy. Lvling is extreamly fast, and there are enough mods out there that with the right ones I could probly teach my cat to play it. The raids are epic untill you play EQ or EQ2 and see what a real epic fight is, and the player base is a bit, childish to use a nice way of putting it.

All in all, download the tirals for each game and try them out, once you make a decision its not set in stone. I still to this day randomly find my self going back to EQ, EQ2 and Warhammer, as well as EVE when the feeling strikes. Its really a matter of what you find fun at any givin moment.

If story is your thing, why not try The Lord of the Rings Online?

I can recommend WoW without any reservations. It has everything anyone interested in a typical fantasy MMO would want, and then some. Anecdotal evidence about WoW's playerbase as being 'childish' is rather beside the point - my entire guild is made up of mostly married thirtysomethings, but that doesn't mean that's what the entire playerbase is, either.

The truth is that millions of people play WoW, a subset of which will be children, and a subset of which will be annoying. I generally don't let the fanbase of a game determine whether or not I'll play it, and I wouldn't suggest you do, either.

I only tried WoW, big mistake for me, eventually when you hit the max level you realize that there isn't anything to do but go to the same dungeons again and again hoping for "epix lewwtz" and then it hits you: this game sucks.

But that might just be me.

I would definitely go with WoW. Especially now that Wrath of the Lich King is out. It's easy to pick up and lots of fun. I never got that far into EQ2 because of the large loading times and lag that it had for my less than awesome computer.

Play something good, go for EVE or pirates of the burning sea... you know, something that is actually worth playing.
So seriously true.

Wait for Stargate Worlds, if the poor guys still have a place to live and don't starve to death before it's ready for release.

And if that doesn't end up holding your interest for too long then the old republic is in production.

I'd have to suggest WoW. I really enjoy playing it. Even at lower levels I find it quite fun. EndGame content is good and all that fun stuff. WotLK came out so thats 10 more levels, plus the new area has much, MUCH more story then any other areas. So story-lovers will have their rich lore cups running over.

If you considering games other than WoW or EQ2, and you really want a game with a nice story, then I would recommend FFXI. Now keep in mind this game is a brutality primitive and punishing MMO, and it suffers from extreme console-itis, but there is one thing that it has in its favor, and that's a coherent gameworld and plot that unravels slowly and keeps your interested. The plot is mostly delivered FF style in cutscenes (yes cutscenes in an MMO) but there is also a real sense of a unified other world in the consistence of the field/dungeon designs and the goals of the game's missions and dungeons.

oh god don't do it

it isn't worth it

Between wow and school, work, hobbies, friends, a relationship, family, pets, and personal hygiene, somethings gotta give. Something always gives.

I can understand the dullness of the pvp after a while, it can get stale, but not much PvE? There loads and loads of pve to do. 3 starting zones that if you do 0-pvp will still get you leveling up at the same speed as someone who heads straight for the rvr zone on level 1. Add the various class mechanics and I'm still having loads of fun. Not sure on full endgame stuff outside of RvR, I know that theirs the "finale" public quests, and the skaven lvl 40 dungeons, but these are all team/warband based stuff.

Personally, (if you hadn't guessed) I'd say go with WAR.

Or as others have said, Eve is also a damn good game if it suits you.

Hrmmm, EQ2 looks better and has a less "copied from games workshop(warhammer)" feel to it, but WoW is easier to play. It really depends on what you're looking for. I'll always recommend warhammer online over world of warcraft though, since WoW is such a blatant yet inferior clone of the warhammer universe.
