I've done a search on the forums but could not find a definitive answer to this question...

I just finished the 23 episode series and I have to say I dont know what the hell went on in the past 23 episodes...but for some uncanny reason I like it?!! It's like that chick you went out with, that all your friends were wondering what the hell you were doing and you couldn't explain it either, she wasn't the love of your life but at the time you couldn't help but to smile whenever she's around...and a week after you break up you realise you don't know her last name...

ok i've seen soo many people put this as their top 5 anime so im hoping they can school me about what the plot was about? and i say that i've only seen the 23 episodes to avoid being flamed for not reading the novelisation of the series that was only released in japan in traditional kanji in limited print (if at all it exists).
from what I understand humans used some fuel replacement that wiped out 85% of the population. They then got into this big space ship and flew away?! then god decided to create proxies...and these proxies created human cities in self contained shields to protect them from infection from the outside air?!(vaccine)...and ergo proxy of romndo realised his humans were imperfect so he decided to up and leave them...then that Mayer guy realising he needed a proxy to survive invaded mosk and stole their proxy and used that to sustain romndo...meanwhile ergo proxy split his himself into ergo proxy and vincent and played everyone like chess pieces...he ultimately wanted vincent to kill all the tube grown humans...also, god activated the awakening thingy where ergo proxy will unknowingly go and kill all the proxies and also their civilization by extension since they need a proxy to survive because God realised the real humans were coming back and he didnt need the fake humans that his proxies created...and the cogito virus was probably released by God or the other Ergo proxy sitting on top of romndo to hasten the killing of the tube grown humans...then in the end the humans released...and i think vincent decided to live out his days as a normal human with re-l?

also would god just have let all the tube humans and the proxies live if the real humans didnt decide to come back...and that grey monster thingy that was pregnant and lived in that toxic cave....was that a real human?

did i get all of that...honestly in some weird way it makes sense...but im sure i have a lot of facts wrong...im actually really confused hope someone can help me out here...i tried googling but never got a clear account there was this one blog people keep pointing to but the blog isnt there anymore...haihz...

mind you i still cant bring myself to like NGE...u had to do like tonnes of wiki reading to even begin to understand what everything is about...i never saw the ova's

From the wiki internets:
Ergo Proxy (エルゴプラクシー, Erugo Purakushī?) is a science fiction suspense anime television series, produced by Manglobe, which premiered across Japan on 25 February 2006 on the WOWOW satellite network. It is directed by Shukō Murase, with screenplay by Dai Satō et al.. Ergo Proxy features a combination of 2D digital cel animation, 3D computer modeling and digital special effects. The series features cyberpunk, steampunk and gothic elements, and focuses heavily on the psychology and mentality of its protagonists.
So, now people know what you are talking about. I'm going to put the spoilers in a spoiler tag so you don't give away half of the plot. Cheers!

I can't believe you could'nt get into NGE.
Love it, especially the big **** you that End Of Evangelion was.
Okay, the Rebuild's aren't doing anything for me too.

Ergo Proxy....pfooh...i watched, loved it, and don't know why.
But clear answers, i dunno, i liked the fact that a lot was just open to your own interpretation.

btw thanks for the spoiler tag...never been a forum savvy person...

but honestly i don't know, NGE was very confusing...partially the story, partially the fact that the whole first half of the series gave me a Gatekeepers (a very nice simple anime that i feel was underrated) vibe and somewhere near the end they decided to do a 180 and make it into a philosophical exercise...the OVA as i understand it basically rewrote the whole ending...i'm yet to get around to the OVA because atm there are a lot of anime that i find are good and i am able to enjoy without putting my brain through a hernia (i'm not dissing your anime choice), but NGE overall feels like it started off like a michael bay movie and 3/4 way through turned into something akin to the hurt locker with a lot of philosophical aspects..

also of note i liked the first season of ghost in a shell, but the second season got really dry...this is just to say that i don't hate the genre that NGE, ergo proxy and ghost in a shell is in...

that's just my opinion and i very well maybe wrong because everybody obviously loves the anime?! oh wells...so yeah i guess ergo proxy was very vague... also this is one of very few anime that the dubbing was actually pretty decent except for vincent's voice which sounded like someone killed his puppy :) nway cheers and hoping someone can shed somelight on this ergo proxy thing
