Can someone explain something that just happened. As I was playing mass effect 2 I'm on the final mission. All characters loyal and all where they should be. So imagine my surprise when just after killing the human reaper mordin dies as part of the ground team. Seriously pissed off will need to re load but wtf?

Sorry for the rant erm...for discussion value...how do you think the deaths of the characters in mass effect 1 and 2 will effect 3?
I was told that you need to bring Mordin into the final boss fight with you if you want him to live. Apparently he has a weak defense, so will die if he is left to "hold the line!"

Edit: Doesn't Mordin (or random crew members) die if you send him back as the escort? I heard that Grunt was the best person to use, because he had a strong defense and can escort the crew safely. Of course, I haven't tried anyone else (never used Grunt much anyway) so I don't really have a breadth of experience here. That's just what I heard from other players.

For the over 9000th time, send mordin back with the crew and take tali and kasumi(or jack if you don't have kasumi) to the final boss. Or any assortment of the three. Those three are the weakest, so any way you do it, as long as you put those three in those places you don't lose anyone.

To the above guy, sending back with the crew is a loyalty check, nothing more.

As far as deaths go, the human crew member from ME1 will remain nothing more than a gender swap of the same thing. Miranda has some odd plot armor and is more difficult to kill than others so she'll probably be important. Tali and Garrus might be important, having been in the first two games. The rest are probably going to get shuffled off into nothing, die of x, or make a 5 second appearance and have no real effect.

You need your best defensive team members to stay back while you go set the charge. Garrus, Zaeed, and Grunt are the best defensive characters. You can take one of them and be fine, though. You should, however, take one of the following with you to set the charge: Tali, Mordin, and Jack. You should also send one of those three to escort the crew back to the Normandy. Those three have the highest likelihood of dying during the suicide mission.

So again, when you go to set the charge...

Leave behind at least two of Garrus, Grunt, and Zaeed
Take with you one of Tali, Jack, and Mordin

My recommendation: take Mordin with you. His Incinerate Power does massive damage to Armor (2.4x the normal damage) and also does solid damage to Barriers and organics (whatever the listed normal damage is). The collectors are organics who use armor and barriers. Tali's drone is decent, but nowhere near effective as Incinerate. Jack's powers (aside from Warp Ammo, but I don't like to rely on my squad's shooting) don't help much in the final fight.

I have a feeling that Garrus won't be a squad member in the third game...
On the Shadow Broker ship, the file for Garrus says this: "Former C-Sec officer. Exceptional tactical and team-building skills. Leadership potential overshadowed by Shepard. Unlikely to fully develop under Shepard's command". I think that, along with Garrus having dealt with his prior attempt to lead a team, may foreshadow him leading his own team to try to convince the Turians that the Reaper threat is real.

It would be cool to see him leading a team, I think.

Everyone has their assigned role that they're good at and--oh, I see you already got it. Well then...

I'm betting that, story cannon wise, no one is dead in Mass Effect 3. Everyone is supposed to survive. Whether they will be on your team again is up for debate. Tali and Liara better come back, and I guess Legion too. Everyone else I don't really care, but they better have a good reason for abandoning me WHEN THE ENTIRE GALAXY IS ABOUT TO BURN!

I don't even think Kaiden/Ashley is truly dead. I fully expect to see that person again in Mass Effect 3, this time as a tool for the Reapers. Shep was rebuilt, so who's to say the Reapers (who are much more advanced) can't rebuild Kaiden (who I choose to leave)? Who says he even needs to be rebuilt? Perhaps the Geth or the Reaper captured him before the bomb went off. If yo look at the ME 2 save import, he's listed as M.I.A., not K.I.A. Could be an oversight, but knowing BioWare I'm betting it means something.

You NEED to send Mordin to escort people back to the ship or he will probably die.

Basically, during the part of the mission when you have to fight the Human Reaper, you need to take the weakest people with you in terms of defense. Mordin, Kasumi, Jack, Tali, etc. The survival of the team at the end of the game entirely depends on some kind of unknown "Defense/Armor value". Grunt, Garrus, and others have fairly high defense and are fine.

Mordin on the other hand has the lowest armor of any character you have, so you either have to send him back with the crew or take him into the big boss battle along with you.

Tali and Mordin are both weak links if they're both holding the door one of them will die.
you either have to send one of them back with the survivors or take one of them with you on the final mission. regardless of loyalty.

Anyway...

in ME 3 you're either going to have a massive team or all the ME 2 characters will be reduced to supporting roles.

Miranda will be dead in a ditch somewhere
Jacob will probably go back to Cerberus
Zaeed and Kasumi are going to leave after getting paid
Thane might be dead by the time ME 3 starts for all I know
Grunt and Jack will stay because they have nothing better to do
Tali will be an Admiral
Mordin might go back to the clinic
Garrus will still be your trusty sidekick
Samara could stay on but Morinth will probably go back to omega
And Legion will most likely upload back to the Geth

your new team for ME 3 will have kal'reegar, Conrad Verner, The Biotic God, Chuck Norris and Batman. The reapers won't know what hit them.

As I pointed out on the Bioware forums - In Mass Effect 1 and 2 there is only a single squad member who can not be ignored or killed.
Liara.
Every other character can die, or even avoid being recruited.
And now she's the fucking Shadow Broker...
Bioware couldn't be any more obvious with it's "IMPORTANT CHARACTER HERE" sign.
Still, it'll be interesting to see how Mass Effect 3 plays out.

The guy on that post should have officer experience (i.e. Miranda, Garrus or Jacob)

As long as I get Garrus. That happens, I don't care about anything else. And yes, Mordin has the possibility of dieing no matter what he does. Try sending him to escort the crew back to the Normandy.
Thanks man will do .. just pissed I needed to restart the whole god damn mission!
Make Jacob head the second team, send Tali through the vent system.

Have Mordin take crew back to Normandy, have Jacob lead second team, take as many non-combat characters as possible to ensure high survival rates of other team members.

All puns aside, Mordin probably died because you sent him to do a role where he wasn't good at.

For the people crying spoilers, its been out for over a year. If people havn't played it yet then they obviously don't care for it.

I know there is a certain etiquette about spoilers here on this forum but i always find it funny when people put spoiler tags on 5 year old games.

Anywho, as for Mordin, i'ma not sure. I had him on my ground team when and he was fine. I just got lucky and breezed through the final mission.

EDIT: Although i do understand in hindsight that there is no indication this is a Mass Effect 2 thread, but still.
