The real question is, "What happens when this cycle comes around to a decade that was almost entirely retro/homage?" In the age of on-demand entertainment, I really think people are stretching themselves
less. As more entertainment is available at the push of a button, people (as a whole) have less reason to try new things. Each niche is large enough to comfortably cloister its fans, and far too many of them are just fine with being so cloistered.
When only one or two
major blockbusters came out, you'd better go see them to know what the buzz was all about. Hell, you couldn't even hop on the internet and find 1,000 reviews to get you up to speed. Same goes for TV, music, and video games. With a little less freedom, people had a little more reason to branch out.
One side effect of all of this is that the artists themselves seem to have an increasingly narrow field of influences. The eventual result, I feel, is going to be increased "artistic incest," wherein the weaknesses of each generation are going to propagate unto the next (and pick up a few more on the way).
We need another Renaissance... which, when you think about it, was really just people tapping into
long-forgotten influences, breathing new life into a dim and dying cultural landscape.
