The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - The Movie That Broke MovieBob

MovieBob feels that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is, in a way, a better movie than its predecessor... but just barely.

I warned you not to get your hopes up, Bob. I really did. I just doesn't pay to be optimistic sometimes, especially when you can see it coming.

So basically, Sony wants to be like Marvel but they neglected to make a movie that's actually good in its own right. Exactly as I predicted. I wouldn't be surprised if WB tries to do the same with DC universe and fails for the same reason.

Good God... I'm so sorry, Bob.

This is what happens when a studio holds onto an intellectual property not because it has some sort of vision for it, but because it sees it as a cash cow. We'll be stuck looking at a series of soulless sequels, just so Sony can squeeze every last cent they possibly can out of Peter Parker.

At this point, I'd almost *want* the rights to return to Marvel Studios and for that fanboyish setup to actually take place. Anything would be better than Sony Pictures going "Yeah, so we gotta keep the rights to Spidey because money... So yeah. Have a half-assed movie."

Or, shit - someone convince Sam Raimi to reboot those reboots. Anything, literally *anything* would be better than this.

Ouch.
I wasn't expecting much from this flic, but for it to be so bad?

And is it fitting that the DC announcement of their wannabe-Avengers is tied to this review...

Bob, do...do you need a hug? I was pleasently surprised to hear that you knew who the Gentlemen was, he's one of my favorite villains ever, to be honest. Even if he is a bit over-the-top and slightly Villain Sue-ish, he's just so delightfully irredeemable and hammy in a low-key way that I fell in love with him.

Hell, I'd just say have Sam Raimi pick up the original Spider-Man series where it left off. The Bond franchise had at least eight meh-to-downright-bad movies in it and it still kept going, because nothing is ever perfect 100% of the time. So Spider-Man 3 was kind of a bust, so what? Move on and make the next one better.

But noooooooo! Batman rebooted and that was successful, so we've got to reboot everything.

I had just finished watching today's Big Picture when this came out.
That was heart-wrenching. Superhero movies always got the most interesting reviews from Bob... Sucks that they also tend to be really bad.

Better yet, just stop everything Spiderman altogether for at least 20 years.

That'd at least get this sour taste out of our mouths and let us forget about the abortions that are the ASM movies.

I wanted to say something snarky. But then that my SOLVEmedia puzzle was "Vogon poetry." Nothing else I could say would feel quite as appropriate.

Vogon poetry.

Electro, "who gets a bunch of scenes devoted to him even though his storyline doesn't have anything structurally or thematically to do with the other stuff and he basically ends up being a henchman", sounds like Sandman from Spider-Man 3.

Speaking of Spider-Man 3, I wonder if Bob hated that too. Even though it had its fair share of nonsensical motivations and actors who don't really pull-off their characters (or something like that), at least it had Venom messing Spidey up so much that it got funny. Too bad there isn't "Apathetic/Hipster Spider-Man" in this movie like "Emo Spider-Man" in the older one.

Yeah, now that you've finally seen it, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 didn't feel like a movie to me, as much as a poorly made advertisement for other movies. For all my problems with the first one, at the very least there was some semblance of a plot. This doesn't even have that. Oh, and the last 10 minutes?

Look, I get that Gwen Stacy dies in the comics. She is perhaps one of the earliest examples of a major character death and that death played a defining role in Spider-Man's life. I'm just not understanding why she needed to die in this movie franchise other than a misguided attempt at pleasing the fan base. But I would have been forgiving of that if there was a good execution (pardon the pun) in the movie. But the movie's handling of this is laughably bad. Gwen might as well have had a "I"M DYING" sign above her head with neon lights after their first conversation and the last ten minutes which feature her death? From the web hand to the time skip, it plays just as bad if not worse than the last movie's handling of Mr. Stacy's death.

EDIT: I'd just like to add that, having followed your twitter, I think the actors in this movie are not the problem. Everything wrong with this movie falls under its poor writing and directing. In fact, I call it a testament to Andrew's and Emma's acting ability that despite having nothing to work with, still gave a great job in their roles. In fact, if this movie gets its (undeserved) praise, this will be why. The actors cover up, however superficially, this stain of a movie.

God this is like star war episode 1 all over again.
something i enjoy is now tainted

Wait come to think of it didn't bob voice strong opinions that fanboy should calm down and get over the rage.

I know, he'd say that he doesn't like this film because of its commercialism not its quality, but he forgave all that in the avengers side shows (Iron man 2)

I know that bob is also of opinion that give true objectivity is impossible, his opinions are allowed to be biased. But the question arrises who is this review for, cause bob's bias in this case seems to be he hates everything about the films, so is this a review of the amazing spiderman for people who hate amazing spiderman?

I seriously hope this doesn't break out into a flame war because Bob doesn't like this film. He clearly doesn't need it.

I read about the ending on wikipedia. An if it does end that way then id react the same way. lol. They are world building as quick as possible. Same as what DC are doing with BvS to get their JL movie set up. All the suits are rushing everything to make Avengers box office while ignoring what Marvel had to do and the time and risk to get there.

Holy crap what a seething review! But I can understand it. Bob articulates exactly how I felt about the first Amazing Spider-Man, and in general, other franchises I care about that get exploited by movie producers, television networks, and video game publishers. It's depressing. I know your pain, Bob. We all do. My condolences. =(
