Moviebob thinks the original Transformers movie was dumb?

I can never again take his word for a movie...

It was a masterpiece that was ahead of its time. I can still watch and appreciate that movie to this day.

Really though... Moviebob has been more miss than hit with me anyway. We used to see eye to eye on alot of movies, now our opinions differ greatly.

Such is the advancement of time.

in all honesty why the hell should I watch any of Bay's Tranformers (including this one) when I have Pacific Rim with another one set to be released in a few years? In fact, Del Toro seems to get the idea of genre fiction a lot better. Bay has spent his entire career being a wannabe auteur without any of the talent. He really just does things in a hamfisted manner but thinks he's being subtle. I think it's best exemplified that the crowd who tends to like his movies the most are insecure meatheads, not film scholars or cinephiles.

Here is hoping Bob doesn't backflip on his opinion again when this one gets universally panned.
It's already been universally panned. 30/100 in Metacritic, 18% in Rotten Tomatoes, zero stars from Rolling Stone's Peter Travers, negative reviews from New York Times and New York Daily News and a solid D from Richard Roeper, whom I quote as saying "the longer the movie goes on, the less interesting it becomes; it just wears you down. As we were finally reaching the 165-minute mark, all that noise and fury was about as exciting as the special effects in an Ed Wood movie".

This is just Bob being a fanboy. Movie sucks.

Jesus, people. Bob celebrates a superhero movie, you guys call him a fanboy. Bob pans a transformers movie, you call him a butthurt fanboy. Bob identifies a few good points in a movie everybody expected him to hate, you call him a fanboy.

Bob reviews movies on the Escapist. Strong opinions on major facets of pop culture are to be expected. He's not a damn politician. if you don't like his brand of movie reviews, feel free to subscribe to a different critic. This weekly "Let's call out Bob for daring to publish his opinion as part of his job!" practice is getting really old.

You're addressing a collective I do not represent nor am I even aware of. I thought most people had this guy's back.

Dunno what's going on here, but I wouldn't exactly call this movie a success...also not sure who to believe.

So apparently if you enjoy getting your eyes/ears blown apart by 3 hours of pointless chaotic action then this is for you.

If you don't, you'll end up hating this movie because it hinges on torture. Overall it doesn't sound like it's worth the money to see it.

So...is Bob is wrong or just in a minority? I don't see anything wrong with his opinion, the guy likes superhero movies. I'd be more surprised if he hated the movie, to be frank. I think most of those type of people come from the YouTube comment section rather than this actual website.

Normally I'd think that too, but Bob panned all the other Transformers movies, so it's not like he's giving this one a pass just because it stars the Transformers in it, I guess he legitimately thinks this film is.... what words did he use? Average?
Anyways if I had to guess why this review is so high compared to the other Transformers films I'd have to guess that the "improvements" this film had over the other movies(No LaBeouf, no Megan Fox, no blonde Megan Fox who is somehow a worse actress than normal Megan Fox, no racial caricatures, the army personnel are the bad guys as opposed to the good guys that have no personality but more screen time than the Autobots, and less frenetic action) allowed Bob to be less than angry at an otherwise terrible film.

Oh Bob, Bob, Bob, Bob, Bob.

I was expecting a nice rant. Some solidarity with the people tired of endless empty franchises just milking the lowest common denominator. A railing against film formula over film making. A bit of anger at how studios prop up their films not by making them better to attract more American ticket buyers but pandering as hard as they can in China to make up the box office difference.

Instead it kind of feels like the day Movie Bob sold out. Don't look for better films just settle for whatever Hollywood shovels your way because it's got a cool name like Transformers attached to it. Maybe Hollywood has finely killed Bob's love of movies and from now on the reviews will be whatever, not like we could hope for better.

I will certainly say this though, the Dinobots (theoretically the reason to go see the movie) were a complete disappointment. Not that I was shocked, mind. Given that Bay clearly isn't a fan of previous Transformers works and thus has no idea what makes them good, it's no shock that he saw the Dinobots and basically just said "Okay, so make some robot dinosaurs and people will eat it up." Except that no, we won't. The Dinobots weren't awesome because they were dinosaurs. Well, okay, so the Dinobots weren't awesome just because they were dinosaurs. They were awesome because they also had personality. They were characters in their own right. Meanwhile in this movie, they never say anything. They could have been interchanged with anything else and it wouldn't have changed the movie in the slightest. Compare that to the original Dinobots where a lot of what made their scenes awesome was their stubborn and self-assured personalities. Switch them out for any other character and the scenes just wouldn't be as memorable.
Yeahhh, but I think Bay played a safe game on this one. Because if he were to use their personalities, it'd bite him in the end. Think about all of the other "not so bright" transformers from the other movies. People HATE those. I could see it ending up coming off like the twins or the mini-bots..

Transformers: Age of Extinction is surprisingly good, despite having a whole host of flaws.

...wwwwwwwwow. Did NOT see that coming at all. I was waiting for Bob to take this film and saw its bollocks off, especially after the Kotaku AU review [http://www.kotaku.com.au/2014/06/transformers-age-of-extinction-australian-review/] which described it as "an appalling abuse of your time, your intelligence and your patience for general Michael Bay tropes." The first 3 films are, going by his reviews of the 2nd and 3rd ones, some of the most hated films he's ever seen. I never in a million years would have expected him to actually like this one!

But yeah, just listening to the plot as he describes it and taking a better look at the footage (I was studiously ignoring the trailers because I was steadfastly refusing to get interested in this at all) it DOES look and sound like a big improvement on its predecessors. The robot designs ARE somewhat improved and the lack of jaw-droppingly racist stereotype characters and tiresomely obsessive miltary worship are a welcome change. Sounds like Bay actually watched his previous efforts and said "OK, so what am I doing wrong here?" and actually changed a few things. Colour me surprised.

Still won't go see it. But still surprised.

I may or may not see this film (though Optimus Prime riding a robot T-rex might factor into a bit), seeing as I find some of the plot elements are quite interesting. Yes, this movie isn't going to be great but it's a Michael Bay movie, that much should be expected.

Well if Bob didn't hate it, maybe it's worth seeing.

Incidentally, I'm still hoping to see a live action Transformers movie that features Unicron.

Giant robot Captain America with a glowing sword riding a robot tyrannosaurus rex. Is that worth $14 for those two seconds? Not on your life, since I just saw it here and it's stored in the old brain whenever I want to see it, which won't really be that often.
