Ok Ill just say first that I dont mind the adverts per say. Ok when you watch 4 vids consecutively and get the same ad every time its annoying. But I accept it. I dont want to join publishers, and they need revenue. Fair play.

But please for GODS SAKE TURN THEM DOWN!

It happens nearly every time...When they come on they blare out of my speaks to deafen the whole house. Can you make they recognise the volume setting on the video itself and have it adjust itself accordingly are something? I dont have my speakers turned up too loud. I get decent volume on escapist vids at about 50%, do I really need this stuff yelled at me?

EDIT: I should clarify since I seem to be getting misunderstood. The QUANTITY of the ads is not what's bothering me. It how much NOISE they make in relation to escapists actual content videos.

I thought all ads, all the time, did this?

I've never seen an ad anywhere that hasn't been deafeningly loud (and that includes tv)

It's getting a bit ad-heavy. I understand need for revenue, but it's starting to get too omnipresent.

Speaking of ads here, the ones on the front page that are animated tend to slow my laptops down. When two play simultaneously everything moves at a snails pace.

Nothing against the ads or using them, just hate it when everything slows down because of them.

It went to a court of law in the UK some time back. The watch dog clamped down hard and set a limit on the volume for adverts.

"The maximum subjective loudness of advertisements must be consistent and in line with the maximum loudness of programmes and junction material."

More content means we need more revenue to pay our contributors and make the site a better place. Our only two sources of revenue are ads and merchandise, there is the subscription but I don't think that's a main source of income.

If you can stomach a few minor ads, we can keep the content high.

What's really weird for me is that EVERYONE is talking about how awful that advert is, but I've never seen it o_O
I feel like I'm missing out.

OT: I agree.
That is all.

The ads are fine, especially now that they've stopped advertising cataclysm.
Although, every site should learn from Hulu's like/dislike ad button. It provides valuable market information, and allows ads to be catered more towards the user.

I understand why the escapist has ads and I have no problem with them. If I did have a problem with them, I would just subscribe(which I'm probably going to do once I get a job) or stop watching the videos. On the volume part-mute your computer before the ad plays, and then unmute when the ad stops. That's what I did with the "IT'S FOR THE CHILDREN" ad.

I feel you haven't really addressed the complaint here. I clearly stated that I have no issue with the adds themselves. Its the volume of said adds which is the trouble. Even if I turn the vid volume up to max, the ads are STILL louder than the video. This is just unnecessary, it doesn't advertise it just wakes up my house-mates and pisses me off.

OH I'm sorry! I thought you meant volume as in magnitude. Yes I'm an idiot, but I'm tired, bear with me, I'll try and sort it out for you.

I just press the mute button, browse some other websites for a bit, then rewind the video to the start and watch it.

Besides that, I am glad that they got rid of the Slim Jim adverts. I didn't exactly enjoy being questioned about my "Monster meat stick" or whatever it was.

It's actually why I joined the Pub Club. I got tired of the ads, though I do understand the need for them. But, if it came to stomaching the ads or suffering less content, well, I could always manage some data during the minute or so.

i haven't really noticed its increasing, they normally don't tend to disturb me, unless they move the video to a ad box where i cant look through the forums while watching the video.

Pffft, that's nothing. I can probably recite every video ad for Slim Jim this site has.

OT: Yes, I hate it. Is it increasing? No clue, but it knows the right way to attack my eyes.

Not trying to sell anything, but $20 a year will mean no ads ever. Publishers club means there aren't even banner ads.

UPDATE:

I just talked to Virgil and Spinwhiz about the situation.

To quote Virgil:
"I don't know who does it, but I know it's not us, and I have no way to change it" :p
The advert volumes are set by their makers/the advert system op (i.e. Google for Google ads). Those guys have no control over the volumes.

But anyway I'm going to try a few alternatives for you;

1) Get headphones, I use them myself.
2) Mute during the adverts.
3) I haven't come up with this one yet.

I'm sorry guys. ~Sev

You got an answer before I even responded. Nice :D

1) Ergh, I have headphones, and while this spares my house-mates, it still breaks my ears.
2) If adverts came up every time I suppose this would be ok, if highly annoying since I dont happen to have a mute key on my keyboard and the woffer in under the desk (yeah I know this is petty :/ )
3) Just ask em to turn em down? Its hardly unreasonable and not unprecedented. As I posted earlier in the UK the advertising watchdog who governs these things has limited the volume of ads on the TV (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7388473.stm). Idk if they will even deign to listen but there most be SOMETHING that can be done :(

And sometimes it'll let you pick your add as well, I love that.

I mean sure, sometimes you're picking between boring ones (hmm, laundry detergent or allergy medication?) but still.
