Escapist Emergent Phenomena

Now that most or all of the "X attacks you with Y" and "Y and Z are about to die, which do you save" threads seem to have finally been locked (even my own), I am wondering if we can draw out some actual discussion value from these wastes of bytes.

Every couple months or so something like these polls pop up, and over a few days there are many copies, devolving quickly into more and more asinine topics and then to exasperated and ironic attempts to make fun of them, and then they go away, either through moderator lock or declining interest. Something along these lines always seems to be in the process of developing at any given time.

My question is, where do these come from? Are we a large enough community that emergent phenomena are a cultural inevitability, like fashion trends in the real world? Is there a way to stop these stupid imitation polls, or are they just a constant cycle? Is someone or something controlling it, making sure we develop along the paths they desire, or is it something far stupider and non sequitor? Does anyone care, or do you just ignore the whole hullaballoo?

All I got from the parodies that ensued is that dadaism is live and well as a tool of social criticism.

Is that not to be expected? Someone comes up with something new, something funny or interesting, so hordes of people either desperate to be behind the next big thing copy it and hope their one takes on. Failing that, they miss the point of something being zany and original, and pump out endless copies and wonder why they aren't funny anymore.

One video of Hitler with invented subtitles is funny. 200 identical ones aren't funny. The 200th video clip with a shrieking goat isn't as funny as the first. Monty Python lines that were funny for being absurd and out of place aren't when they've been chanted mindlessly for decades...on the other hand, the rewritten Dead Parrot sketch is much funnier than the original because of this.

...

Or maybe a slight variation on the original poll will bring back different results and the information might be useful for something.

I like to call this the "Reddit Phenomenon." Named after the way that 4chan will laugh at something once and then Reddit will beat it to death through millions of imitations and just by being plain annoying about it.

I found that having two topics with small variance on the same page of a forum a little silly, so I decided to work with it. Don't go all "big picture" on me. Humans like to imitate other humans, it's entirely normal (social "critique" or not).

Also, what the guy above me said. :D

I have broken it down into a nice and totally scientific way of representing the reasons. It is guaranteed 100% accuracy. In a totally unrelated note, did you know that 72% of statistics were made up?

-65% of them are people doing the "Me too!" in the hopes of capturing lightning in a bottle again. They see how popular a thread got and are hoping that people will pay just as much attention to the mutated version as they did the original. See "X is coming at you with Y" threads that are currently popular.

-30% of them are people who want to make a point that for whatever reason, they feel needed it's own thread to do so. My ATM [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.402704-Poll-You-come-across-a-broken-ATM] got this treatment by a member who REALLY did not like so many people's answers and made a similar but slightly altered thread to illustrate their point.

-5% of them are attempting to mock the problem but somehow fail to realize that they are just making the problem bigger.

So there you go, my 100% scientifically accurate reasons for why this occurs. By the way, in a totally unrelated note, did I mention that 47% of statistics are just made up?

I'm not in off topic like I used to be. The one observation I made last year still remains true though. Thread trends to tend to rise but there is a saturation point and eventually everyone gets sick of them. Direct mod/staff action with locks or just an unspoken community move away from *those threads* ends the posting style of the month.

Then we get to have a flood of fetish threads again or something. <_<

Meh, I just made my one because I thought it might be humorous if, in the midst of all the random street violence, drowning made a comeback.

Not hilarious, for sure, but funny enough for to be bother writing the damn thing.

It used to be versus threads at one point. This forum tends to go through cycles of these kinds of things. I imagine soon we will start up with the "Am I the only one who hates/loves this popular/hated title?" threads sometime in the near future.

So you are drowning, I have the oppertunity to save you and get free money or save my dignity by doing nothing.
I just watch.
If you would like a variable, change Y to Hitler....
MY ANSWER IS THE SAME!!!

Anywho, people like to join in.
People want lightning to strike twice.
People want to see how far you wound need to push someone to do something they think to be wrong or right.

I don't understand it either. And when the "style of the month" eventually pops up, it's a sure-fire way to get me from posting in the forums. It all becomes a particular uninteresting homogeneous blob.

You sound like my mother.

Then again, I should have expected as much for liking the drowning threads.

They want to be as sexy as me.

But that's even possible.

I'm not even as sexy as I am.

>_>

Dunno, some people see a thread's success and want a thread they've made to achieve the same?

Things always go in and out of fashion. It's possible the first thread was a genuine thing, and the parody's just escalated from there.

Don't get me wrong, it's funny at first. I did genuinely giggle a bit when they first started appearing.

But when there's 5 on the front page alone.... It makes me want to cry O^O
