Hi. I'm new.

No, this is not your dad's ?Hey, imma newb here guys, please welcome me?-thread, I just want to know the lay of the land. So how are noobs viewed here, and when do you cease being a noob?

I'm a longtime lurker. I've been here since Yahtzee started in 2007. I remember watching Heavenly Sword and Other Stuff one of the first days of high school that August. But enough of that. If I want to gain my Escapist-cred I need to know how it is measured here. Post count? Detailed profil? Join date (I'm screwed)? Or is it your classic "being an intelligent and pleasant person instead of whatever everyone else on the Internet is being"?

Yours truly,
Me

You're measured purely by how interesting you are, and usually remembered best through a good avatar.

We don't hate noobs here, just try to avoid trolling, and stay out of the basement.

Just be decent person, make some interesting posts, and you should be fine.

Joining user groups and hanging out in the forum games are also pretty good ways to make friends, as well as drastically boost your post count.

Welcome to the escapist! Usually if you are pleasant and encourage intelligent discussion you'll fit in fine. Read the forum rules etc. Also watch grammar and speling-it's simple to do a google check on anything you are unsure of, I say this due to the "seize" I'm assuming is meant to be cease.

I utterly despise noobs in all forms. Newbs, on the other hand, I welcome.
And, a noob will never stop being a noob. That's what makes them a noob.

Coincidentally, were you aware that the words "newb" and "noob" [http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Noob&defid=2568674] do NOT mean the same thing?

You'll more be measured by the way you act, although people will always look at your join-date and post count, that's a fact of life.

Since this is a very large community it will take a while for people to recognise you and having a recognisable avatar helps, which your's is currently as it's a well-known thing (so likely to stick in people's minds) and easily visible. If you do change your avatar some time I would recommend not getting a generic anime person or a MLP pony as there are so many of each that it'll hinder your recognition.

It's all about the join date, people just feed you that intelligent and pleasant person line when they don't make the ranks of the elite.

Kidding of course it's all about the post count. Now go get addicted to forum games for a few months and come back with 20,000 posts.

Take it from me, I haven't been providing meaningful insight for nearly four years now.

Anyone who measures "Escapist Cred" by post count is normally someone not worth paying to, in my opinion. Post count is pretty much the indicator of how much free time someone has. Really, to get any sort of "cred" here, you probably need to have good posts. Quality over quantity is pretty much what the majority of users go by when it comes to posts.

As for how noobs are viewed here, with slight caution from what I can tell but otherwise, pretty much accepted without any problems. As for when you cease being a noob, no idea, it varies from person to person. Oh, and prepare yourself for a barrage of basement jokes too. But otherwise, just be yourself and we'll all get along like a house on fire and you might become known around here.

Oh, and welcome to the Escapist, insert that speech we used to use to welcome new members here.

Noted, and thank you.

It is! And the funny thing is, that is the only word in that post I did google. :S I followed this link http://www.thefreedictionary.com/seize and found this definition: b. To come to a halt: The talks seized up and were rescheduled. I will of course edit. Thanks.

I knew that "noob" had a much more negative connotation, but I have not read the definitions before. Thank you.

Nah, we got no kind of ranking, just be nice and don't make BS threads and you'll be alright... or you can be like me and a few others, with several warnings, but we are still pretty much like the rest. Sometimes even more plesant because we are close to getting banned and behave nicely cos' of it.

First off, stay out of my basement!
Most will judge you by what you do and write, not your post count or join date.
Make sure to read the rules, otherwise I may have to ban you, and I'd rather not do that.
There are a bunch of great introductory threads, and I'll go and make a list of them for you, check this post later.
The rules, make sure to read them! [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/codeofconduct]
Outdated but still good. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.112832-The-Banhammer-and-You-A-Users-Guide-to-the-Forums]
A list of groups you can join. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.259599-User-Groups-Help-Thread-Index]
How to make your posts look good. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.198114-Escapist-User-Guide-to-Posting-Commands?page=1]
But a few unwritten rules for you first. Don't make vs threads, and we like debating here, so if someone argues with you they're usually just trying to provoke friendly discussion.
But anyway, welcome, and if you need anything, just ask :)

Post count. No.
Join date. No.
Post count to Join date ratio. Depends on whether they sound like an idiot most of the time or not.

People keep mentioning the avatar but having a flashy avatar is one way to get attention, until everyone has flashy avatars... but once that happens wouldn't a simple avatar stand out more?

Ahhhhhhhhhh.

Mostly, nobody cares, or very few do about your post count or join date. Just engage, use the quote button to draw peoples attention to your post if you wish to engage them.

I don't know how to become 'known' on anything. In any game I've ever played, the only people who notice when I start playing are rl friends. And my name's 'Rusty pumpkin', so I doubt names help at all.

On a side note, no I have no idea what a rusty pumpkin would be.

Just don't be a douche. We've gotten a lot of trolls and asshats over the last month or two, don't know why.

Also, there's some thread somewhere that has all the formatting you can use here, might want to take a look at that.

Oh come on the basements always the most fun place ^.^

OT: Just post on topics when you want to, talk with people (The forum games are good for that) and basically just try to make friends. People here don't tend to have any feelings about 'noobs'... I mean, we were all one once.
