I've noticed that a lot of people have a lot of friends on this community but i've never seen any posts that sort of invites to a friendship.

I'm wondering when YOU add someone as a friend?

Well there are only two reasons to add someone as a friend. You want to know when they're online and easily check what they've recently posted, and/or you want them to know you appreciate them. I generally do it when I notice I haven't friended someone cool yet, or someone makes a delightful pun and I assume I want to read more of their posts.

This is pretty right on.
Most of the people in my friends list are people I whom I enjoy conversing with, and/or got to know better in the famous, and infamous, Escapist IRC (I wuv you guys!).

Although, there are bunch of people in my friends list whom I just added because they added me. I'm not one to deny a friend request, but I only hit 'add' first if the person is fun/funny/not an idiot/any of those, but on the IRC.

I'll guess i'll come across as a bit of a newbie now but i don't have any idead what the Escapist IRC is. Does the Escapist have some kind of social network thingy?

Oh, and thanks for the answers :)

I actually remember the only friend I had here for a while until last month which was The Rockerfly. I believe it was because we had quoted each other multiple times then our conversation went to PM were he showed my exact same type of humor so that's mostly what I have been basing my friendinization. Other than that this...

If someone posts something in the same vein as my unique variety of humor, I'll check out their profile, look at some of their other posts, and if they're consistently bizarre in the good way, I'll friend them.

And if they reference Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, that's an auto-friending. Just how I roll.

Escapist has IRC, but IRC terrifies me, so I don't do. But I got into Twitter because of the Escapist, and it's fun to say howdy to people through there.

I'm also one of those people who usually sends a personal mail to whoever I friend, and most people will mail back. No marriage proposals or anything yet, but it's fun for what it is.

Just don't be timid. Friending isn't a sacred thing or something. If people don't want to be social around here, they shouldn't be around here.

Wow, i've had the escapist as my starting page for well over a year and i've never noticed anything whatsoever :O
I guess people doesn't talk about it in the forums. It could use some advertisement though :p

Friends are whatever you make of them here. There is no special privileges associated with being added to someone's friend list. I have a personal policy of adding anyone who adds me out of politeness.

If they share a similar interest, if we've managed to get into a conversation on a thread, if we live in the same county etc. I find reasons to do so. There are some people I wouldn't add as a friend, but the majority of people I probably would. I think it's fun!

I've friended people because they've expressed an interest for a less well-known game of which I'm a fan, or because they've expressed a political view that closely resembles my own.

But most of my "friends" are a result of them having replied to a thread that I started on the subject of being addicted to the Escapist forums, so I decided to invent Escapists Anonymous as a kind of post-modern bit of rubbish :)

I add people who post interesting things, bring good points, or just have an awesome avatar.
Really I'll add you for any random reason.

I find people adding me as a friend all the time. I'm a tad more cyincal when it comes to this, and unless I know you, that post gets deleted and unfriended. If I did know you, I think, "Hey, X would like to chat more / or thinks there's something good about me," and friend the chappies.

I only friend someone if they are my friend, or at least would like to talk to them more. The people I have there now are all pretty cool, most of them I talk to through IRC, Escapist messages or MSN.

You and my other 136 friends eh? Anyway, that doesn't mean I don't think you're special!

My rule is add friends if they add me and remove when they remove, or add someone if I have a fun conversation with someone over PM, which generally starts when I have a fun debate or something on the forums.
