Escapist friends

My first friend was Anarchemitis. Since then, I've only added the people in RP's, the people who add me first, and the folks I play in XBox LIVE with.
I return friend requests after brief proofing to make sure they're not diseased, and friend people to some extent arbitrarily. Not without reason, but the motivation varies.

I'm a reactive friender. I only friend people who friend me first. It's not a particular aloofness to me, it's just not something that I actively think I should do. If I appreciate a comment I'm more likely to quote it and discuss than I am to go "omg friendz" and click.
Because of that it always boggles my mind to see someone whose been here a month having 20+ friends, as well as being the reason I only very recently got the 10 messages badge.
I don't know how many people are like that here though. I guess you don't hear from us often.
Edit: Oh yeah, and I clicked this thread thinking "friends outside of the internets" because so many seem to know each other. There's only one I know near me and he's too young to drink.

I add friends if they're decent posters in a roleplay I participate in, make a decent argument against me, or make me actually laugh aloud. I do not just friend people because they friend me without so much as a quote or a message; I feel like they're just badge-hunting.
And I always send a message when I befriend someone. Just so they know why.

I've only added a couple people, and it's been people I've had good exchanges with. There are more who I've got plenty of respect for, but I don't really like adding people out of the blue.
I just add people as the equivalent of the "fist pound/head nod" sign of respect. Or I add the warcry people.

When do I add a friend? I don't. And nobody's ever added me either. I like to think it's because I'm not one of those people who appears everywhere. There are several people out there who I see a lot on the forums, and there are some who I only see once. If I weren't myself, I'd be one of those people who I only see once. I might pop in, add something to the conversation, respond to somebody's message, then leave.
I've never based my self worth on the size of my friends list. Also, I never think to do it. I might some day. It's not a sign of disrespect, more one of apathy.
