I'm always up for some Battlefield 3, Left 4 Dead 2 or Killing Floor, all on PC. There's a platoon already for The Escapist on Battlefield 3, I'm in it, I just haven't played Battlefield 3 in like 2 weeks.

I'd be up for a game of killing floor if there are a couple more people around. I've played it to death with 1 friend but i imagine it's a much better experience with a full party and a good mix of classes, rather than just duo'ing it with the odd randomer popping in here and there.

You guys up for a match of KF some time?

If you are we could see if anyone else is interested.

Well what would you suggest? I think its mainly because FPS are the easiest games just to jump into and play a few quick matches with people, not because they don't like to play anything else.

There's stuff like LoL but people would be at all different skill levels and it might get frustrating for games that require a bit more time and effort than FPSs.

I don't own anything in the way of FPS really.

Only games I've got that I can play online are AC:Brotherhood and Revelations, I do own Tekken 6 and Burnout: Paradise but my missus plays them far more than I do. All for PS3 by the way.

We need a way to set up a schedule for date, time and platform.

Escapist has a TF2 in the UK and East Coast, a KF server, and for the west coasters I have a TF2 server there too (and some, *cough* game devs frequent there).

Even better, make it a weekly thing so we know, Tuesdays we play game X, Wednesdays, it's game Y.

I don't really see how TF2, BF3 or COD doesn't draw parallels with LoL or DOTA. You have people of varying skills, you have people with varying degrees of unlocked power, etc.

I know the escapist used to have a Minecraft server, is that still running?

Things like Terraria, Minecraft, LoL, DOTA 2, Company of Heroes, Starcraft 2, Civilization 5 would probably be my preferred choices.

Anybody that's ever played a shooter can play BF3 or CoD, you can't just jump in to LoL or DotA, there's a lot of stuff you need to know to actually play it properly, and the skill gaps are way bigger on games like that than on games where your skill comes from twitch and accuracy.

We must get a game together. As you said, we should do various games on various days.
This needs to happen.

I think we should start off with just one particular game, one day a week at a particular time i.e. Tues=TF2 East, Thurs=TF2 West, Sunday afternoon=BF3, etc.

That way it's a known schedule that people can work around, and focused attention on a particular game/server, which should hopefully snowball to the other days and times if we get it going on a regular basis.

User groups lack ease of access and intuitive design. A stickied thread with someone who would be willing to organize and coordinate weekly/bi-weekly events across the major consoles and PC would work best. None of my game related groups I've joined are still actively playing.

Yay, finally some interest! I've been running various game servers for a while (a lot of it due to @Frostycoolslug's server in London where he's donated space - the rest are mainly on my personal server in Toronto)

I'm happy to spin up instances of any game server where I can run a linux client if there's people here who want to play it. Our resources are somewhat limited, but we can spin up and down servers based on what's being played. For example, we have Garry's Mod available, but it's usually offline when people aren't playing due to the amount of RAM it needs. Killing Floor was under a similar situation for a while (only supporting 6 players makes it fairly inefficient on resources), though it is currently online.

We have a lot of plugins for the TF2 servers (Sourcemod: map voting/random cycle/faster spawn/team scrambling), including a couple custom plugins written by Slug to manage reserved slots and such.

Any server that allows it, I will make an effort to get PubClub reserved slots, although that's only TF2 currently. For the TF2 server, if you tag the beginning of your name with [ESC], you'll get a slot over non tagged normal clients as well (this is from the custom plugin).

I'll get my Mumble server back online soon as well, assuming it doesn't get hammered, should be some decent voice chat you guys can use.

Any comments or organization will most likely go through the Group [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/Escapist-Game-Nights] or IRC [/chat]. Speak up if there's a game you want to play and I'll look into getting a server up and running.

I can also write SourceMod plugins, so if there are any gameplay requests, I might be able to pull it off.

Case in point, SR has a plugin that mocks players that have died to the saw or train.

One thing I would like to do is implement a bounty system similar to Homefront MP's system where if one side or player gets too powerful (3+ dominations, 10+ kill/assist streak), if the opposing team is able to kill them, there's a morale boost (i.e. buff banner) and/or longer respawn penalty on the high value target. This should work towards keeping the teams better balanced and avoid one side stacking and rolling the other side, causing people to rage quit and ruin the server.
