I remember when ZP's Assassin's Creed review was uploaded on the Escapist's YouTube channel... The year it was uploaded just so happen to be the same year when the Brony phenomenon began to take form and, soon enough, claims left and right about Yahtzee being a "Brony" were both hilarious and faceplam-worthy to the point of straight-out comment/reply "warfare"...

That video will never be the same again... on YouTube... (because of the changes that YouTube has going through in those past few years...) But, I'll never forget... NEVA-<link=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0QHw7iy1Rg>OH HAY! BIG MAC!!!

...Other than that, any "controversial" threads are just "war-bait", when you think about it...

...and now, I feel "forum" young... and untainted by "war"... (I don't know how to feel about that, to be honest...)

I remember the time when threads about the zombie apocalypse, your fantasy dream-team and x vs. y were 'in.' Those threads were simple but a lot of fun. As for actual events, the glorious battle between Blizzard and Relic in the March Mayhem season of 2009 will always hold a special place in my heart. Oh the fanboyism :3

Well yes I remember a few happenings.

But I usually stay out of threads like this, hearing and noticing them of course, but I don't like to get involved into this stuff.
It's like this Anita Sar(keesian?) thing, I know who she is now, and vagualy that she makes videos and talks about women in gaming. I know nothig more, it doesn't interest me to get into stupid debate were people have an opinion and won't change it. Doesn't matter if I state what I think, I have my thoughts on the matter and don't want to get into stupid fights.

Same was with the Extra Credit, Mass Effect, March Madness, Feminism, VS-threads, Brovengers/InjusticeLeague and some other stuff too old to be remembered.

It's nie to see how this thread has brought out all the "old school people" with join dates around 08-09 :D

I signed up like just before the whole Extra Credits thing happened. It was like dodgeball, only replace the dodgeballs with the word "pretentious." Then there was the whole "Zeel" thing. I wasn't part of that either, but it's almost hilarious how one guy caused a shitstorm so large that people still talk about it. I also remember a month or two where every other day it seemed there was another Dark Souls Easy Mode thread.

Other than that, not a whole lot of shitstorms really. I mean certain threads can get rather nasty, but it was never quite as pervasive as those three that I can recall.

The Extra Credits vs The Escapist debacle was a gigantic mess. Dragging the messy backroom problems into social media certainly made the situation worse, which James?(the black haired guy on EC) should of not done. The huge amount of kneejerk reaction from the people on the site did result in misinformation and irrational anger. Honestly, this shit is best left between the parties.

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/for...-NEW-Extra-Credits-Presents-The-MMORTS?page=1

This is the only big thread I could find of the mess.
prepare for the crazy.

Of course the March Madness war between Valve and Zynga. What a sight to behold, even if the site was flooded with 4Chan porn >.> so much porn...
Damn zynga and it's legion of facebook farmers.

When the Jimquisition first came to the escapist it was not very good. Everyday new threads came up how it was a terrible choice and ruining the image of the site. I was put up threads saying his old youtube episodes were hilarious.

One of the early episodes he had an intro in which he apologized saying he had toned down the show, and he had to rethink some things. Now he has 3 shows running and writes for the site.

The Escapist forums where mentioned in an Escapist video. Blew my trucking mind.

I'm not sure if I missed Zeal or Zeel or was just young to understand what was happening. All I know is, I really wish I could have been there. His rants on Mass Effect are legendary in their level of insanity, or so I've heard. Really should have paid more attention

I got into one of the most civil debates about which Fallout was better between 3 and NV with TheLostKing. We each brought points and just finally agreed to disagree on which was better. Same happened with a BF3 argument on being able to purchase levels with money. I said bullshit he disagreed on the argument of skill playing a massive part on how effective they are even with high level gear. Same happened as the last argument in the end.

I did also post a very unpopular opinion on the kid who got arrested for threatening to shoot up a school after a bad game of LoL. My post was the first post to the news article. I woke up every day to like 3 or so quotes from it. I eventually stopped responded and vowed never to post on threads that involve sexism, peoples' rights, and other heavily debated topics every again.
Oh man, you missed Zeel?! He was so awesome! Every single Bioware thread he was there, arguing adamantly with about five different people never conceding defeat even when he was wrong, which was most of the time.

He dodged bans, came back from bans, rising from the ashes like some sort of Terminator. He was there for I think months until he finally got permabanned. Then he came back for one final post on like gay rights or something, pissed off about everyone in the thread with one single post then was IMMEDIATELY permabanned again.

Thus ends the saga of Zeel.
Did he take the side of Bioware or was he arguing against them. None of the people who talk about say.

I do remember his little comeback when he said something along the lines of "You couldn't be talking about this handsome devil could you?" in a banned thread and then that same day he was gone.
Against, so very against Bioware. He would just blow everything even slightly negative out of proportion or straight make stuff up on the spot. You can imagine he had a fuckin' riot with the ME3 ending.

He was doing this before ME3 and DA2 was out as well, so while not even having facts he was treating his wild speculation as gospel. When the games released he was ten times worse.

It was pretty funny really, I even got to argue with him once myself. That should be on a T-shirt

I argued with Zeel 2012

You forgot to give him a ladder.

Daystar is a grizzled vet. Merely typing gives him flashbacks.

>.>
They're like Vietnam flashbacks, but obviously worse, because this is the internet, and the internet is far more traumatising than something as petty as 'real' war.

...I didn't even realise that Zeel posted on The Escapist. He a name for himself on the Bioware Social Network as well, with masses of strident posts.

The only "war" I really remember is the Extra Credits issue. I was so annoyed at The Escapist over what happened that it took me a while to decide not to boycott the site permanently.

Stuff all this "old guard" and "get on my level" jibjab. You outlanders talk too much.
Ye Gods, it has come to pass. Someone who joined before me... yet still has a lower post count than my lurking ass?! Inconceivable!

OT: Like many, I recall the insanity that was the Extra Credits schism. That was about the only time that I got into a real argument with someone here. Won't say over what, don't want to open old wounds, but there were harsh words exchanged.

I also seem to recall a weird bloom of threads about suicide back in late '09, although that may just be my weird perception. As someone who's had a gun in his mouth, I get pretty involved in that kind of thing, and when people started in on how whiny depressed people are, well... okay, the EC thing wasn't the only real argument.

I can't really remember any other major "incidents" on the Escapist, but then, I usually only skim the Latest Posts for a couple minutes a day while I check on the news and any columns that I follow, so I've never really been up on what's happening with the forums.

My own war story? Spending 20 pages explaining over and over again why something miffed me in Mass Effect 2 while dealing with a constant stream of back handed, passive aggressive retorts.

I've seen more shitstorms than I care to remember.

It feels odd being one of the old guard, this place has gone through so much since then.

The new blood will never know what MM does to this place.

Oh god why did you remind me? MM was the reason I migrated to R&P.

Yes, noobs, that's how bad it was.

I've been lurking around for a while now and I've seen so many things, things that stick in my mind though are the stuff that everyone else has mentioned like the March Madness Mayhem, the Extra Credits debacle and the great brony wars. Little things that I remember though are the hot topic threads especially when it came to gamer "entitlement".

I've had some good discussions on here though on topics like video game addiction and I've gotten good advice on stuff like building my first PC. I'll probably just continue to lurk in the shadows and observe the community, it's interesting xD

Maxthereaper and all that good stuff. Lot's of forum games, the march madness, zeel in all his glory

I lurked this site more then a year before joining, I didn't understand everything but I liked it for some reason.

I do remember staying up really late playing tug of war with numbers in the forum games. It was intense.

Premium accounts.. No one said those it seems.

I was (still am) against those, mostly since Ive seen greed overtake other "free" sites I love. Though since Escapist doesn't have little dolls to dress up with virtual clothes bought with virtual cash, I guess they haven't succumbed. Though they do push ads too much. Anyone who says to get a premium account to stop it are those who fell for their trap.

Side note: I apparently started my hiatus from this site when the EC thing happened, since last I remember was the kickstarter was going well and good.

Is like one of those Slashdot discussions where the all the single/double digit user ID's start posting in the same thread? Disclaimer: I was here for the first edition of escapist, where you had to download a PDF of it :)

Oh man, when Yahtzee stopped using songs for the intros and outros of zero punctuation, I still go back and watch the old ones for the good memories. It took months for people to stop posting on the videos complaining about it.

I joined back in 2009, shortly before *i think* Max the Reaper was banned, so my memories of him are hazy- but I remember the Escapist before it had an R&P board. Back then, political and religious arguments in off-topic were more entertaining because you had idiots and trolls causing huge flamewars which went on for dozens and dozens of pages. I also remember the old 40 something page "pimp my gun" thread. Probably one of the few threads of that length that didn't dissolve into hatred and abuse, it was a enjoyable to follow and I was often impressed with the stuff people made on that!

I've since spent most of my time on R&P, so some of the users I mention may not be known to all readers. Danyal's threads were interesting if not entertaining at first, but after a while things got repetitive because he's spammed R&P with posts about how bad Muslims were and why the singularity was just round the corner and that we should be free to screw animals. I remember Shock and Awe as well, largely for one particular post were he squared off against this other user who's name I forget- He was basically George Galloway incarnate though. Shock got banned for it, but "George Galloway" never returned! I remember Demented Teddy as well. She was a bit argumentative but hardly a major problem- I think it's a shame she got banned- especially since IIRC she said she was a mute who spent a lot of time on web forums. It's a shame Boedicca also got banned recently- she had a lot of potential to become another Furburt, Reaper or perhaps a Daystar!
