The recent release of Arkham Asylum has promted a number of threads to be posted about Batman, and the Joker, couple that with people still posting about the movie Dark Knight, and you have a lot of people commenting on a popular comic book hero.

While not everyone is clueless about Batman, an overwhelming amount of people, simply don't know or have misconceptions about the super hero.

So, Lets clear up some of the more popular wrong ideas:

1. " Batman should be light hearted or funny, and the 'dark, brooding, attitude' is new."

This is totally wrong. The comic was originally intended to be dark and full of murder, in it's day it was considered extremely violent and the subject matter was sometimes risque. It wasn't until the Adam West television show that Batman went retarded. This is because the man behind that show hated comic books and set out to do the worst job he could. ( This is true, look it up if you don't believe me) The comic book was changed to reflect the television show, and so millions of people got the idea that Batman should be stupid.

2. " Christian Bale's Batman voice is a stupid insert into the Dark Knight."

If you don't like the sound of his voice in the movie, fine, it's your opinion and you're entitled to it. BUT, you should understand why that voice is in the movie. In the comic's Batman has frequently employed a "Bat" voice, which is significally more gritty and lower than his normal "Wayne" voice. He does this because, aside from making his voice harder to recognize, it also strikes a bit of theatrical fear into the hearts of criminals.

3. " The Joker is responsible for Batman's parents being killed"

In the comics, little is established about the Joker's origin, name, or even mental status. BUT, Batman's history is pretty well known. Batman's parents were killed by a common thug named 'Joe Chill'. The concept that the Joker was involved is largly due to Tim Burton's Batman movie.

That's all for now, but understand this, Batman cannon is in the comics, not the movies. While comic's constantly change, and many are written after a new movie or show has established a new "popularity" for the character, the Batman mythos has, and always will be in the comics.

So let's hear from you. What questions do you have about Batman? Those of us who are comic book fans, what other misconceptions do you frequently see posted/hear about Batman?

P.S. I know that I am a huge comic book geek. But, everyone has something that they are a fan of.

I don't know THAT much about him, but I don't have to. I despise Batman.

I'm with this guy. The first Batman anything I ever liked was The Dark Knight. I kinda watched the cartoon in the mid-90's, but that's it...

But ya, I know nothing of the fiction. Too many comics, too little interest.

EDIT
Oh, and of course I watched/loved the Adam West Batman, haha.

I knew all that stuff about Batman, and I wouldn't consider myself a fan... then again I haven't been one of the ones criticising the current incarnation of Batman, despite growing up on Adam West's TV series.

Exactly what this guy said, witht the exception of the Adam West part. It's Batman Begins that interested me in the Batman mythos.

I've never read a Batman comic in my life, but I knew all that.

I guess I'm just naturally knowledgeable on everything?

Why is that? if I may ask.

While it is true that Harley Quinn originated in the animated television show, she did not become part of the Batman universe until she was incorporated into the long running "regular" edition comic book. Before her inclusion into the comic book, you might liken her to many villians in the Adam West television show ( i.e. Egghead ) Popular, but not actually "real".

Behold the joker in his
Pre-villain glory! Why if you read this you might even get an origin

Though they still don't say his real name.

Actually, I own this comic. If you note my phrasing, little is "established" about the Joker. The Joker has had a number of origin stories written about him, and while the Killing Joke is the most popular version, DC comics have never established any of them as the "official" version.

I always got the impression that The Killing Joke wasn't really intended to give a definitive origin for the Joker. Sure, it's the story most commonly associated with the character, but he even says something like 'If I'm going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice', suggesting that even he's not sure about his past.

I knew everything you listed up there. In fact, I would have to be nerdy enough to slap anyone in the forhead who did not know those things. I guess that means that I'm officialy a comic book nerd. Whatever, as long as I don't start buying "collectibles" I think I'll still be fine.

I kinda disagree with the term "Superhero" for Batman. He dosen't have super powers and most of his stregnth comes from his gadgets. He is still one of my favorite heroes but he dosen't seem super.

Ot: I have never read any of the comics (I do have some comics but there all from my uncle and there all Marvel comics) and most of my knowledge of Batman comes from the movies and games as well as a couple visits to the Wikipedia page.

One of the reasons people don't know too much about the established canon is that most of the Batman comics out there simply aren't worth reading and because they're bland across the board like most hero comics.
The few comics you could justify giving a crap about are...
- The Dark Knight Returns
- Knightfall
- The Killing Joke
- No Man's Land
- Arkham Asylum
- Joker's Last Laugh

I knew most of this stuff, even though I never really got into Batman.

I do want to read The Killing Joke sometime though.
