Etiquette of band t-shirts at concerts.

I've had a question buzzing around in my head for awhile now, so I thought I'd ask all you wonderful people here for the answer:

Do you wear a t-shirt with a band on it to that specific band's concert?

I heard sometime ago (years, maybe) that you never wear the band's shirt to their concert; it was a dead giveaway of being a fake fan. However, about a year ago I saw Muse in concert (and yes, it was awesome), and while I was wearing my neutral shirt, thousands of others were wearing their brand new, fresh off the table Muse shirts.

I ask this because this coming Thursday, I'm off to see Murder by Death in concert and have a Murder by Death shirt... is it a faux pas to wear it or totally okay?

I am open to the notion that I have clearly looked too far into this.

Well if you need to wear a shirt to signify that you like the band then you are a fake fan.. Real fans really woudn't care, Because they know that they are real fans and you would not be able to change their minds.

Hmm. I see the point, but what if you're QUITE LIKELY to meet the band itself?

Sigh. I knew I was looking too far into this. Though, of course, it seems like owning the shirt itself means that I'm a jerk for... owning... the shirt...

Wear what you feel comfortable in as long as it doesn't go against the setting of the concert (aka wear pink clothes at a death metal concert)

The fact of the matter is you wouldn't have payed "X" number of dollars to see them if you weren't a real fan

Etiquette only comes into play when wearing a different band's t-shirt to a concert.

examples:

If you wear a Megadeth t-shirt to a Metallica concert (or vice versa)...you have broken an unwritten law and a fanboy *WILL* beat you up.

If you wear a Velvet Revolver shirt (or top hat) to a Guns N Roses show...Axl Rose *WILL* yell at you and possibly throw you out.

NOTHING happened.

I did see a guy wearing a Halo T-shirt get absolutely pummeled though.

Depending on the show, I'll wear that band's tee to the show.

I'm headed to my second NIN show of the year at the start of December, I'll wear one of the NIN tees I have of theirs. As a Spiral member, their official fan club while it was still functioning, gave each member an exclusive shirt. I'll probably end up wearing one of those. It may be a douche move to wear a shirt proving how much of a fan I am, paying to be in the official fan club, but I don't care. I've got the shirt, and the official membership card (which I will never get rid of), so I'm going to wear it.

ok heres a little scenario: you run into someone on the street... they are wearing a shirt saying "*yournamehere* is great"

wouldnt you find that just a bit creepy? certainly wouldnt make you view that person as an equal, more a prospective follower or ironic jackass.

I wouldn't. I mean, maybe it's different at a "Murder by Death" concert, but when I'm going out, I'm at least going to wear something with a collar. I mean, if you do meet the band, they're not going to shun and hate you because you're not wearing their t-shirt.

And I mean, let's face it, band t-shirts suck. I've only ever seen one band t-shirt that I didn't hate (and I bought it, and I wouldn't wear it to their show).

It would be amusing if the next gig Guns and Roses play the entire audience were wearing Top Hats , maybe someone should be giving them out outside the venue

If you care what other people think about what you wear to a concert then you need to get your priorities in order.

Wear it, but use a sharpie to write "Sux" after the bands name. They will respect you for your creative individuality, and rebellious attitude.

Or maybe kick your ass, at least that’s what I'm betting on.

Not really, Mindless Self Indulgence sells shirts that say "MSI SUX", everyone whored those out at their last concert. To be rebellious wear their opposing band's T-shirt. Like, if you go to an ICP concert, wear an Eminem T-shirt. As for the topic, I say wear what ever you want. A shirt doesn't prove you to be a fan or not.

...okay. I really did not expect anyone to still care about this, because it's been pretty apparent that I'm an idiot for even caring. Thanks for the feedback, though; it's just been something I've been curious about.
